At its centre are the papers of James Skene (1775-1864), artist and friend of Sir Walter Scott. Skene corresponded with notable individuals in the cultural circles of his day and was connected with such organizations as the Royal Institution, the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the Institute for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts in Scotland, the Board of Trustees for Manufacturers, and the Bannatyne Club, among others. The archive was formerly in the possession of Major P.I.C. Payne, of Minehead, in Somerset, who acquired the material by purchase from various sources. Some of Major Payne’s own papers relating to the collection from the 1960s, 70s and 80s are included (folders 102-107). Major Payne provided individual descriptions of a portion of the earlier Skene family papers (folders 1-10). These descriptions are listed in the Appendix to this inventory. Folder 10 includes some letters of James Skene himself. Other related families (folders 22-36) include Moir of Stoneywood (the family of James Skene’s mother, Jane), the Forbes family (that of Skene’s wife, Jane, daughter of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo), Russell of Aden, Keith of Ludquhairn, Gordon of Balgown, Ramsay of Invernellie and Peterhead, and Skene of Halyards and Curriehill.

ONE ILLIKG AND SIXPEN : No. G-/PO2.. * « GOLFER'S ANNUAL FOR 18.69-70. COMPILED AMD EDITED BY CHARLES MACARTHFR. AYE: TROTTED AND PUBLTSIIED BY HENRY & GRANT. 16 PKEFACE. GOLF, the National Game of Scotland, and one of the most enticing of out-door exercises, is now so extensively indulged in as to deserve, at least, some statistical publication. A few years ago a work similar1 to this was published, but was not continued. Since then the practice of the Game has rapidly extended; and many solicitations having recently boon made to the Editor to bring out a GOLFER'S ANNUAL, his love for the Game, and his desire to gratify Golfers and others, induced him to undertake the work. The ANNUAL contains much interesting matter, such as a record of all the Golf Clubs at present known, with their respective. Competitions and Tournaments during the last three years, the llules of the Game observed by different Clubs, as well as other incidents; and the details of tho Competitions for the Champion Belt since its institution by the Prestwick Golf Club have been deemed of sufficient importance to entitle them to consider- able space. While imperfections may be apparent, it. is hoped that, though not claimed on its merits, the object of the ANNUAL will secure it a passport for this year, and that sufficient encouragement will be j^'ven for the appearance of its suc- cessor. The thanks of the. Editor avo due, and are now warmly tendered, to the Secretaries of the different Clubs, and others, who so readily furnished information in aid of his efforts.' 1JRUNTON C'OTTAGK, LONDON ROAD, EDINBURGH, Fubfuaiu, 1S70.

The Department has statutory responsibility for the sites and monuments in this list which are protected under Article 3 of the Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (NI) Order 1995. They are and are listed in alphabetical order of townland name within each county. The Schedule of Historic Monuments at April 2016 This schedule is compiled and maintained by the Department and is available for public consultation at the Monuments and Buildings Record, Waterman House, 5-33 Hill Street, Belfast BT1 2LA. No works should be planned or undertaken at the sites listed here without first consulting with Historic Environment Division and obtaining any necessary Scheduled Monument Consent. The unique reference number for each site is in the last column of each entry and should be quoted in all correspondence. Where sites are State Care and also have a scheduled area they are demarcated with an asterisk in this list The work of scheduling is ongoing, and the fact that a site is not in this list does not diminish its unique archaeological importance.
