Summary Don Juan is a unique approach to the already popular legend of the philandering womanizer immortalized in literary and operatic works. Byron’s Don Juan, the name comically anglicized to rhyme with “new one” and “true one,” is a passive character, in many ways a victim of predatory women, and more of a picaresque hero in his unwitting roguishness. Not only is he not the seductive, ruthless Don Juan of legend, he is also not a Byronic hero. That role falls more to the narrator of the comic epic, the two characters being more clearly distinguished than in Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. In Beppo: A Venetian Story, Byron discovered the appropriateness of ottava rima to his own particular style and literary needs. This Italian stanzaic form had been exploited in the burlesque tales of Luigi Pulci, Francesco Berni, and Giovanni Battista Casti, but it was John Hookham Frere’s (1817-1818) that revealed to Byron the seriocomic potential for this flexible form in the satirical piece he was planning. The colloquial, conversational style of ottava rima worked well with both the narrative line of Byron’s mock epic and the serious digressions in which Byron rails against tyranny, hypocrisy, cant, sexual repression, and literary mercenaries.

Cannon University of Washington Abstract From Oldham to Oxford: The Formative Years of Sir William Walton Gary D. Cannon Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Geoffrey Boers Choral Conducting, School of Music The formative years of William Walton (1902–1983) are rarely considered when studying the composer’s life and works. However, careful study of that period indicates many of the directions that the adult Walton would take. Industrial Lancashire was more musically active during the period of Walton’s youth (covering the years 1902 to 1912) than is generally considered. His time as a chorister and later undergraduate at Christ Church, Oxford (1912 to 1920), is replete with influential interactions with talented adults and fellow students. Detailed consideration of Walton’s juvenilia reveals a keen thinker who assimilated these various influences in a unique manner. Far more than merely a springboard for a future talent, these years resulted in inspired works and a firm purpose for the budding composer. In offering a few remarks to the sporting public upon the Turf and the Racehorse, I deem it at least necessary to render them in as simple a manner as possible, inasmuch as they are offered to the community at large. Taking for granted that all the followers of turf pur- suits, or lovers of horseflesh, are not Walkers, Johnsons, or Sheridans, it becomes necessary to write in language which can be plainly understood, instead of indulging in that high-flowing, flowery style, which tends more to test the faculties and bewalder the reader than to enlighten him on the subject ; and substituting what may be termed a superfluity of very fine English for instruction, thereby disguising the absence of practical knowledge: in fine, endeavouring to " spin out a long yarn " on a subject, with the merits of which they are but slightly acquainted.
