But lan- guage is neither perfect nor neutral. It possesses a subjective character of its own. Out of this character. contradictions and bioses arise. The intention of this work is to toke on inquisitive look at language. and to apply the unique prop- erties of the system to the system itself. Subjecting language to its own idiosyncrasies and inconsis- tencies in iteration after iteration in turn brings about major changes and remarkable patterns. It follows that what I hove to soy about words is sometimes best expressed with colors. shapes. or patterns. Putting these thoughts bock into words presents a strange and challenging reversal. This study of language arrives at more questions than conclusions. Are words adequate? Is lan- guage logical? Is logic adequate? My focus on the flows or glitches in language is not in the spirit of criticism. 19ut in the interest of cultivating a new ideo of possibility or perfection. The individual letter is easily overlooked in favor of what is built from it-words, sentences, and the ideas expressed with them. Reading does not demand that we look at the letters one at a time or consider them formally. Working in a sign shop, for three years I drew, arranged, and pointed letters, constructing them slowly out of lines, curves, outlines, highlights, shadows, and spaces. Hoving this intimate experience with individual letter- forms gave me on animated understanding of each, as if every letter possessed its own personality and logic. These pieces ore on exaggeration of the slowness of hand-drawing letters. Tak- ing several weeks to draw, each one is a meditation on the form of a single letter on its own, isolated from meaning or context. These specific letters ore inspired by a German alphabet designed by Paulus Franck in 1601 . In the tradition of illuminat- ed manuscripts, such on ornamental font treats each letter both as on object of worship and as a means of expressing worship towards what is written. But as much as these pieces ore ebroton of the indMduolletters, they ore also on expression of the ideo that celebration-in this case, through embellishment- con lead to obliteration. They ore meant to teeter on the edge of decipherability, oscillating between legibility and abstraction. It is unlikely that any of us spends a day without seeing letters. Probably, from where you are sitting right now, thousands of letters are easily within view Whether you read them or not. they ore there, repeated over and over in endless permutations. The distribution of letter recurrence is not equal for all letters. Some letters and sequences of letters (such as •th· or ·ing·) appear more frequently than others-in some cases hundreds of times more than their counterparts. Based on cryptography statistics used for frequency analysis. the letter e. in English, is used approximately 1.251 times for every nine z's. This hierarchy of quantity becomes visible when a text is sorted or alphabetized. Arranged this way, there is no choice but to confront the idea that every piece of writing, no matter its weight, is nothing more than a collection of letters. The letters of the Latin alpha- bet ore not illustrations of their sounds. Though they may hove evolved from more rep- resentational symbols such as pictogroms, their current forms ore complete abstractions with arbitrary relationships to what they signify. In alternative ways of representing the some alphabet (such as Braille, Morse code, or semaphore flog signals), the sym- bols appear even further abstracted and mysterious. Used under circumstances where pen on paper will not do, the letters ore translated into simple shapes, sounds, and gestures. The meanings of these forms ore not apparent to the untrained eye, but they ore no more abstract, only less famil- iar, than the A-Z alphabet they represent. Try this: Repeat a word over and over out loud until you con no longer be sure you ore saying it correctly. Notice how. when isolated and repeated, the word seems formless and totally dissociated from any meaning. With the exception of onomatopoeia, the sounds of words do not resemble their meanings, nor do the shapes of letters resemble their sounds. Because they ore not representational, words and letters signify by virtue of by being distinct from one another. In Eye Exam I and Eye Exam IV the homogeny of the symbols renders the test impotent. Unable to distinguish themselves from one another, the letters ore pure shapes, meaningless and redundant rather than specific. While most words specify, blah is all things. anything, nothing. Uke a wild cord, it tokes the place of more ·meaningful· words. garnering meaning from its sur- roundings or its physical appearance. In its conspicuous lock of substance. blah is the consummate formless word: a blank slate or, like all words and letters. a vessel for meaning without any meaning in and of itself. For the purpose of representing far more than twenty-six sounds in the English language, there exist only twenty-six letters Many letters-vowels in particular- live a double or triple life, signifying several possible sounds (phones) with a sin- gle symbol Take, for example, the different sounds represented by an a depending on its context. The three shapes in the piece And, Ale, All represent the three different pronunciations of the letter and suggest a one-to-one phonetic relationship between symbol and sound ••••• Furthermore, there is nothing about the letter a as a form that suggests any of the sounds made when the letter is spoken.lt is symbolic of its sounds only by means of a consensus-a correlation between symbol and sound that we have been taught and take for granted. The non-phonetic nature of our written language poses a foreseeable difficulty for those learning English. Decoding written words into spoken ones using proper pronunciation depends on memorization rather than straightforward logic. In 1867, Alexander Melville Bell (father of Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone) devised a more ·rational· alphabet for the purpose of teaching speech to the deaf. Bell's alphabet, ·Visible Speech: consists of 122 symbols, each representing a single sound The symbols themselves are loose representations of the various mouth positions that create each sound. In this schema, the characters of the alphabet operate almost as instructions for how to form their corresponding sounds. ·visible Speech· stands in low esteem in the deaf community. The stringent focus on proper articulation, the spirit of which aimed to ·normalize· the deaf, placed conceptual and abstract thought development on the back burner and created a major setback in deaf education. That both Bells were married to women deaf or hard of hearing presents an added element of irony to their respective inventions. Though perhaps a failure with regard to its intended purpose, the 'Visible Speech" alphabet does point out some shortcomings of the Latin alphabet by proposing a more direct relationship. .

But the widened scope needn’t take in only the majestic, as conjured up in lofty concepts such as planetarity or world-historical totality. Sometimes the scale of world can produce a multifocal optic that helps us pay renewed attention to the literary commonplace. Taking script, the most basic component of literature, as one of the lenses through which to view the world literary landscape, this chapter will examine if, and how, ideas about writing can influence both our close and distant reading. Script is something that usually escapes notice under traditional classifications of literature, which organize subjects along linguistic borders, whether as English, French, or Spanish, or as Anglophone, Francophone, or Hispanophone studies. The construction of literatures by discrete language categories supports a wide-spread view that differences between languages are not just a matter of different phonemes, lexemes and grammars but of distinct ways of conceiving, apprehending and relating to the world. This was a view that was developed into a political stance in Europe in the nineteenth century.1 It posited a language as an embodiment of cultural or national distinctiveness, and a literature written in a national language as the sovereign expression of a particular worldview. One of the facets this stance obscured was the script in which the texts were written.

    DRAFT Unicode technical note NN Auxiliary character decompositions for supporting Hangul Kent Karlsson 2006-09-24 1 Introduction The Hangul script is very elegantly designed. There are just a small number of letters (28, plus a small number of variant letters introduced later, but the latter have fallen out of use) and even a featural design philosophy for the shapes of the letters. However, the incarnation of Hangul as characters in ISO/IEC 10646 and Unicode is not so elegant. In particular, there are many Hangul characters that are not needed, for precomposed letter clusters as well as precomposed syllable characters. The precomposed syllables have arithmetically specified canonical decompositions into Hangul jamos (conjoining Hangul letters). But unfortunately the letter cluster Hangul jamos do not have canonical decompositions to their constituent letters, which they should have had. This leads to multiple representations for exactly the same sequence of letters. There is not even any compatibility-like distinction; i.e. no (intended) font difference, no (intended) width difference, no (intended) ligaturing difference of any kind. They have even lost the compatibility decompositions that they had in Unicode 2.0. There are also some problems with the Hangul compatibility letters, and their proper compatibility decompositions to Hangul jamo characters. Just following their compatibility decompositions in UnicodeData.txt does not give any useful results in any setting. In this paper and its two associated datafiles these problems are addressed. Note that no changes to the standard Unicode normal forms (NFD, NFC, NFKD, and NFKC) are proposed, since these normal forms are stable for already allocated characters.

The aim of this study is to lay a foundation for a new science of writing which might be called grammatology. Even though Aristotle had not meant to say this,3 writing thus came to be considered written speech: spoken language recorded by marks the basic function of which is phonoptic.4 Western scholars throughout the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period held the view of writing as a visible surrogate or substitute for speech. This view, called ‘the surrogational model’ by Harris,5 was prevailing especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. The French missionary De Brébeuf, for instance, in translating the poem Pharsalia by Lucan, spoke of ‘cet art ingénieux – de peindre la parole et de parler aux yeux’.6 In similar fashion Voltaire’s famous quote reads ‘l’écriture est la peinture de la voix : plus elle est ressemblante, meilleure elle est.’7 The Irish poet Trench in 1855 spoke of ‘representing sounds by written signs, of reproducing for the eye that which existed at first only for the ear’; and ‘The intention of the written word’ is ‘to represent to the eye with as much accuracy as possible the spoken word.’8 The surrogational view was still popular in much of the 20th century.

Rig Veda VI.47.18 From the mind, emanates AKARA A considerable volume of work has been done in the areas of content of the written word: its semantic structure; its linguistic interconnections; its etymology and grammer. But the spiritual and philosophical aspects and the physical manifestation of the letter (akshara) need to be examined. The letter needs to be viewed as an organic whole. The visual power and the inner strength of otherwise innocuous-looking letters (aksharas) should be felt, experienced, realised. Our core concern is to probe into the inner processes. We explore the emergence of sound (nada); of speech of writing which gives form (akara) to language. This leads to ideal form -- the ultimate objective of calligraphy. We examine the universality of using the written symbol for meditation, ideation, cognition and communication at various levels, from the mundane to the sacred. Such an attempt would help to create an awareness of the metaphysical (adhyatmic), aesthetic (saundarya), structural (rachana), spatial (akasha) and technical (upayojana) considerations of the aksharas. The psyche dimensions of Akara deal with aspects both inherently metaphysical as well as intellectual conceptual, simultaneously encompassing the world view and inquiring into the mind's eye-view of what emerges as an aesthetic experience: the written symbol which begins as the vibration in every breath drawn from the primal energy-source, the nada, that imbues the calligrapher's mind and guides his hand to express beauty in dot and stroke, shape and form.

This work addresses the problem of how writing is related to speech and how our notions of language are related to writing principles such as ‘the alphabetic principle’. The target of the study is the concept of ‘phonography’ (sound-writing, sometimes called ‘glottography’). This has been used in several theoretical works on writing, often with the assumption that the existence of phonographic systems somehow proves that the purpose of writing is to represent speech. From a functional approach, that is, from a theoretical base where language (of whatever modality) is seen as crucially dependent on actual communicative events, the notion that writing is representational in nature is criticised. Three areas are investigated: 1. the origin of the phono+graphic type of writing (also treated are the origin of spoken language and the medium-dependency of language); 2. the relation between alphabetic writing and notions concerning the structure of language in general and of particular languages; 3. the relationship between phonographic methods of reading old scripts and the prevailing phonocentrism. In all three areas it is found that the possibility of indicating pronunciation of written texts by phonographic means has been overinterpretated in favour of the prevalent representational view.

    The Hangulphabet: A Descriptive Alphabet 1 The Hangulphabet: A Descriptive Alphabet Robert Bishop and Ruggero Micheletto Yokohama City University {rbishop}@yokohama-cu.ac.jp Yokohama City University International College of Arts and Sciences 22-2 Seto, Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama-shi, 236-0027 Japan Abstract This paper describes the Hangulphabet, a new writing system that should prove useful in a number of contexts. Using the Hangulphabet, a user can instantly see voicing, manner and place of articulation of any phoneme found in human language. The Hangulphabet places consonant graphemes on a grid with the x-axis representing the place of articulation and the y-axis representing manner of articulation. Each individual grapheme contains radicals from both axes where the points intersect. The top radical represents manner of articulation where the bottom represents place of articulation. A horizontal line running through the middle of the bottom radical represents voicing. For vowels, place of articulation is located on a grid that represents the position of the tongue in the mouth. This grid is similar to that of the IPA vowel chart (International Phonetic Association, 1999). The difference with the Hangulphabet being the trapezoid representing the vocal apparatus is on a slight tilt. Place of articulation for a vowel is represented by a breakout figure from the grid. This system can be used as an alternative to the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) or as a complement to it. Beginning students of linguistics may find it particularly useful. A Hangulphabet font has been created to facilitate switching between the Hangulphabet and the IPA.
