The title of Gerald Dawe’s new collection of essays on modern Irish writing is taken from Hugo Hamilton’s famous novel, The Speckled People. Dawe opens his book by quoting “You can’t be afraid of saying the opposite, even if you look like a fool and everybody thinks you’re in the wrong country, speaking the wrong language” (p. vi). This opening sentence is a relevant guide to Dawe’s essays, in which the TCD professor Emeritus tries to lead a quiet combat to conjure up forgotten authors (such as Joseph Campbell, George Reavey, or Ethna Carbery) and bring a diversity of perspectives on more renowned Irish writers of the last two centuries. -

Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall A Thesis in the PhD Humanities Program Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Concordia University Montreal, Quebec, Canada August 2012 © Heather Macdougall, 2012 ABSTRACT Finding a Voice: The Role of Irish-Language Film in Irish National Cinema Heather Macdougall, Ph.D. Concordia University, 2012 This dissertation investigates the history of film production in the minority language of Irish Gaelic. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context. -

Housman (1859–1936) Born in Worcestershire in 1859, Alfred Edward Housman was a gifted classical scholar and poet. After studying in Oxford, Housman worked for ten years as a clerk, while publishing and writing scholarly articles on Horace, Propertius, Ovid, Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles. He gradually acquired such a high reputation that in 1892 he returned to the academic world as Professor of Classics at University College London (1892–1911) and then as Kennedy Professor of Latin at Trinity College, Cambridge (1911–1936). Housman Lectures at UCL The Department of Greek and Latin at University College London organizes regular Housman Lectures, named after its illustrious former colleague (with support from UCL Alumni). Housman Lectures, delivered by a scholar of international distinction, originally took place every second year and now happen every year, alternating between Greek and Roman topics (Greek lectures being funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation). This is the tenth Housman Lecture, and it took place on 14 March 2018. Bernard O’Donoghue is a poet and an Emeritus Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford. Tneh Tunku Abdul Rahman University, Malaysia [email protected] DOI: https://doi.org/10.24071/ijhs.2018.010202 received 25 November 2017; revised 2 Dec 2017; accepted 19 February 2018 Abstract This paper discusses the timeless appeal of the poetry of Seamus Heaney, the poet laureate of Ireland and Nobel Prize winner for literature (1995). This paper traces the early developments of Heaney’s poetry and highlights how the creative genre offers a dialogic platform (even in the 21st century) for national and political issues. Heaney’s poetry transcends geographical boundaries with its evocative imagery and fluidity of time and space that is alluring, enigmatic, and striking. This paper will then discuss how multiple roles of Heaney’s metaphorical landscapes from his five collections of poetry (from 1966 to 1979) namely Death of a Naturalist, Door into the Dark, Wintering Out, North, and Fieldwork are not merely poems about the nature, the environment, and Ireland but are instruments about his socio-economic/political views concerning idyllic Irish rural life, memories, nationalism, sectarian violence, colonial British rule, and his Catholic faith. The discussion of his selected poetry offers a deep intimate insight of Heaney’s earlier poetry that mirrors Irish life and its struggles with nationhood.
