p.2 Introduction

Public realm specialists Colour and lighting designers Brilliant Lighting The Royal Hall were commissioned by Harrogate Royal Hall Restoration Trust and the Harrogate International Centre to explore concepts and feasibility of lighting proposals for key locations in the historic and atmospheric Harrogate town centre and for the historic Ambulatory within the Royal Hall. The intention is that lighting will emphasise the distinct character and enhance the quality of experience of users of the town centre. This would have a positive effect for local residents, business and The Cenotaph & Parliament Square leisure visitors, act as positive PR for Harrogate and play a major role in boosting the local economy.

Subsequent to analysis of the town centre, the focus of the study was defined as the Royal Hall and the Cenotaph in Parliament Square – 2 key landmarks in upper and lower Harrogate.

• As an aid to fund-raising, this document summarises the following : • Understanding the role of each lighting intervention and its potential role in the context of Harrogate Ambulatory • Researching history to provide inspiration for interventions in the key locations identified above • Detailed baseline and inspiration proposals for the key sites • A wider lighting vision and supporting analysis for Harrogate • Background conceptual thinking for the sites.

p.11 ZŽLJĂů,Ăůů͗KďũĞĐƟǀĞƐ

Overview The Royal Hall, Harrogate is the most amazing theatre, and is unique in still having its Ambulatory. The building underwent major restoration about 10 years ago: the lighting for the Ambulatories wasn’t a priority at the time but there’s an opportunity to significantly improve it, and to bring it up the same level of wonderful atmosphere as the in the theatre. Improving the lighting would also help focus attention on the revenue generating services, eg; the two bars and the souvenir area.

Key Objectives:

 To significantly improve the overall light levels, whilst putting particular attention on the lovely architecture, and on the facilities (eg; the bars).  To have very flexible lighting, which can cope with changes in usage and focus, eg; from cleaning to theatre intervals to ‘during theatre performances’ to evening functions.  For the flexible lighting to be very easy to use, with an intuitively set up control system  To be very sympathetic to the Grade II* listed building and its style, whilst utilising excellent 21st century technology to achieve the end results.  Cabling disruption should be minimised where at all possible, but there will be a necessity for some new cable routes and some joinery and decoration to hide things and make good.

The Ambulatories - Key Points:

 Increasing overall light levels. This includes functional lighting on to the bar area as well as the souvenir table at the top of the steps.  Accentuating the beautiful architectural features.  The arched columns and sky lanterns provide an excellent opportunity to create a magical atmosphere that evokes the drama of the theatre.  Adding wall lights brings the light down to a more personal level whilst adding to the functional layer of light.  Retaining the original pendant fittings connects back to the history of the space.

The Ambulatories - Key Points Continued:

 New wall lights need to compliment the existing fitting as well as the history and grandeur of the space.  Bespoke styles help achieve the perfect balance between design, function and fusion with the interiors.

Unit 9, Severfield Close, Thirsk Industrial Park, YO7 3BX p.14 rilliantlihnouk 01845 525664 Royal Hall: Concepts

The Bar - Key Points:

  Increasing overall light levels on  Celebrating the beautiful mural Use miniature spots that are RAL both bars is important. behind the bar by targeting light painted to be as discreet as possible across the wall. so the emphasis remains on the mural and not the light source. Please see examples.

Unit 9, Severfield Close, Thirsk Industrial Park, YO7 3BX rilliantlihnouk p.15 01845 525664 Royal Hall: Concepts

The Theatre Caryatids - Key Points:

 These are a wonderful part of the Theatre design, but which are currently quite visually recessive.  Lighting them discretely and sympathetically with warm white light would help really make ‘come alive’ in the space  Coloured light (and the ability to colour change it) on appropriate occasions would tie the caryatids in to the wider theatre ‘event’ lighting  The ability to change the colour of the lighting can also offer bespoke branding opportunities for corporate events.  The solution proposed would use the currently available fixing points and cable runs to keep disruption to an absolute minimum. Fittings can be custom finished to blend in.

Inspiration from the past... It is thought that around 3% of the worlds population were killed as a result of WWII, with around 60 million people losing their lives in both combat and as civilian casualties.

The cenotaph in Harrogate, designed by Prestwich & Sons, displays the names of 1,193 local people who perished in both WWI and WWII.

The proposed light installation could try to capture the scale of this loss.

The pals battalions of World War I were specially constituted battalions of the British Army comprising men who had enlisted together in local recruiting drives, with the promise that they would be able to serve alongside their friends, neighbours and colleagues (“pals”), rather than being arbitrarily allocated to battalions. The practice of drawing recruits from a particular region or group meant that, when a “Pals battalion” suffered heavy casualties, the impact on individual towns, villages, neighborhoods, and communities back in Britain could be immediate and devastating.

The void left in the local community by the decimation of the Harrogate Pals at the Somme, could be expressed by a carefully considered light installation. // ‘... scale of loss.’
