http://www.business-standard.com/article/specials/producer-manish-mundra-is-indie-cinema-s-unlikely-hero- 115031201069_1.html Producer Manish Mundra is Indie cinema's unlikely hero It takes 140 characters and a rock-solid script to convince petrochemicals businessman Manish Mundra to finance a film. Here's more about the producer of films like Ankhon Dekhi and Umrika Ritika Bhatia March 14, 2015 Last Updated at 00:19 IST The chance interaction between film maker Rajat Kapoor and Manish Mundra on Twitter a couple of years ago has, by now, assumed the status of a legend in independent, or indie, film circles. Kapoor vented at the lack of producers willing to back authentic scripts, and Mundra, a complete stranger and outsider to films at the time, tweeted back saying he would produce his film. “He didn’t believe me at first, but then he sent me the script of Ankhon Dekhi,” Mundra tells me on a late night Skype call. “I come from a big family and I could relate to many experiences fleshed out in the script. So I instantly agreed to finance it.” The Sanjay Mishra-starrer took home the Best Film (Critics’ Choice), Best Story and Best Male Actor (Critics’ Choice) honours at the Filmfare awards last month. Mundra proved a knight in shining armour again a few months later, when Swati Shetty of Samosa Stories reached out to him on Twitter for the financing of her debut production venture, Prashant Nair’s Umrika. The film starring Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) and Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel) recently became the first Indian film to win the audience award at the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.

Newton, a rookie clerk on election duty in the conflict ridden jungle of Chhattisgarh, tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the apathy of security forces and the looming fear of an attack by Maoist rebels. Maoist Conflict Map ] SYNOPSIS As India, the world’s largest democracy, braces itself for another general election- with 9 million polling booths, more than 800 million voters, and costing nearly $5 billion -- Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk finds himself entrusted with a task that appears deceptively simple: conducting elections in a remote village in the jungles of central India. The bushes teem with Communist guerrillas, who have been waging a decades old war against the state, even as the indigenous tribals live without any access to mainland amenities. Conducting ‘free and fair’ elections in a minefield like this is no child’s play, as Newton learns over the course of this eventful day. Unfazed with the cynicism and danger all around him, Newton is determined to do his duty. [Photo Credit: Facebook/MasaanTheFilm] Neeraj Ghaywan’s “Masaan”—screened at the Indian Film Festival Los Angeles (IFFLA)—garnered great appreciation and applause. The movie, which colloquially means shamshan, shows us the real Varanasi — a town that is caught amid the spiritual history to live up to and the changing ideas and beliefs of the youth as a result of increased exposure to technology which has taught people to question the rigidity of several ancient practices like caste system and burying sexual desires until one gets married. In the movie, when a local girl Devi Pathak (Richa Chaddha) dares to take a step to experience her sexual freedom, it ends up becoming a tragedy. She is a computer literate who chooses to get a room with her love interest Piyush. The story also weaves in the tale of Devi’s father, portrayed by Sanjay Misra, and Deepak, a lower caste boy studying civil engineering whose family has been in the profession of burning dead bodies in the shamshan (Hindu crematorium) and a chirpy Shalu, a Hindi-Urdu poetry lover belonging to the upper class. http://www.india.com/arts-and-culture/neeraj-ghaywans-masaan-receives-love-and-applause-at-iffla-1136613/ 1/3 5/23/2016 Neeraj Ghaywan’s ‘Masaan’ Receives Love and Applause at IFFLA Masaan Ofcial Trailer | Richa Chadda, Sanjay Mishra, Vicky Kaushal & Shw..
