En la segunda parte se relacionan varios aspectos de nuestro Sistema Solar, principalmente con la Tierra, Marte y Venus. Y en la tercera y última parte, se dedica a la posibilidad de comunicación con la inteligencia extraterrestre en planetas de otras estrellas. Le respondí que «astrónomo», palabra que al cabo de unos momentos le tradujeron. «Sí -respondió-, ¿pero cómo te ganarás la vida?» Yo suponía que al igual que todas las personas adultas que conocía, me tendría que limitar a efectuar un trabajo aburrido, monótono, carente de todo poder creativo. A la astronomía sólo podría dedicarme en los fines de semana. Cuando estudiaba el segundo año en la escuela superior descubrí que algunos astrónomos recibían una paga o sueldo por seguir cultivando su pasión. Entonces me sentí abrumado por un enorme gozo; sin duda alguna, podría dedicar todo mi tiempo a lo que más me gustaba y a lo que más me interesaba. Incluso hoy día hay momentos en que lo que hago me parece un sueño improbable, aunque sí sumamente agradable. Tomar parte en la exploración de Venus, Marte, Júpiter y Saturno; reproducir, repetir los pasos que condujeron al origen de la vida hace cuatro mil millones de años en una Tierra muy diferente a la que conocemos; depositar instrumentos en Marte para buscar allí la vida, y, quizá, dedicar serios esfuerzos a comunicarnos con otros seres inteligentes, si los hay, ahí fuera, en la formidable obscuridad del firmamento nocturno. Si hubiera nacido cincuenta años antes, no hubiese podido dedicarme a ninguna de esas actividades. Por entonces, no eran más que producto de una imaginación especulativa. Si hubiera nacido cincuenta años más tarde, tampoco habría podido dedicar mi vida a estas actividades, excepto, posiblemente, a la última de 6 Preparado por Patricio Barros La conexión cósmica www.librosmaravillosos.com Carl Sagan las mencionadas, ya que dentro de cincuenta años, a partir de ahora, se habrá dado fin a un reconocimiento preliminar del Sistema Solar, de la búsqueda de vida en Marte y del estudio del origen de la vida. Me considero sumamente afortunado de vivir en un momento de la historia de la Humanidad cuando se están emprendiendo tales aventuras. De manera que cuando Jerome Agel vino a verme para que escribiera un libro que fuese popular, un libro que tratara de comunicar a los demás mis opiniones sobre las investigaciones emprendidas y la misma importancia de estas aventuras, acepté tal responsabilidad, aun cuando su sugerencia llegaba poco antes de que se llevase a cabo la misión Mariner 9 a Marte, hecho que estaba seguro ocuparía la mayor parte de mi tiempo durante muchos meses. En una ocasión posterior, después de charlar acerca de la comunicación con la inteligencia extraterrestre, Agel y yo cenamos en un restaurante polinesio de Boston. Mi horóscopo del día decía: «Muy pronto se te exigirá que descifres un importante mensaje.» Por supuesto, aunque lo del horóscopo no pasaba de ser un juego infantil, el presagio, el pronóstico, era bueno. Al cabo de siglos de confusas conjeturas, de especulaciones absurdas, conservadurismo indigesto y desinterés carente de toda posible imaginación, por fin ha llegado a su mayoría de edad el tema de la vida extraterrestre, y en la actualidad ha alcanzado una etapa práctica donde se la puede estudiar mediante técnicas rigurosamente científicas, una etapa en la que ha conseguido respetabilidad científica y en la que, asimismo, se entiende 7 Preparado por Patricio Barros La conexión cósmica www.librosmaravillosos.com Carl Sagan ampliamente su significado. Por esa razón, repito, la vida extraterrestre acaba de alcanzar su mayoría de edad. Este libro se divide en tres partes a cual más importante. En la primera intento transmitir el sentido de la perspectiva cósmica viviendo fuera de nuestras vidas en un diminuto trozo de roca y metal circundando una de las doscientas cincuenta mil millones de estrellas que forman nuestra galaxia en un Universo de miles de millones de galaxias. La declinación de una de nuestras más comunes concepciones, o de uno de nuestros más vulgares engreimientos, también es una de las aplicaciones prácticas de la astronomía. La segunda parte de! libro se relaciona con varios aspectos de nuestro Sistema Solar -principalmente con la Tierra, Marte y Venus- Aquí pueden hallarse algunos de los resultados e implicaciones del Mariner 9. La tercera parte se dedica a la posibilidad de comunicación con la inteligencia extraterrestre en planetas de otras estrellas. Puesto que todavía no se ha establecido ningún contacto -nuestros esfuerzos hasta la fecha han sido débiles- está parte es necesariamente especulativa. No he dudado en conjeturar dentro de lo que estimo puedan ser los límites normales de una plausibilidad científica. Y aunque no soy, por formación, un filósofo, sociólogo o historiador, no he dudado en esbozar implicaciones históricas, sociológicas y filosóficas de astronomía de exploración del espacio. Desde aquí me atrevería a decir que los descubrimientos astronómicos que estamos a punto de conseguir son del más amplio significado humano. Al igual que ha sucedido con trabajos anteriores a éste, sobre todo si se basan en temas especulativos, algunas de las declaraciones que aparecen en estas páginas despertarán enérgicas objeciones. Existen otros libros en los que se exponen distintas opiniones. La discusión razonada es el alma de la ciencia, como no lo es, por desgracia, en el terreno intelectualmente más anémico de la política. Pero creo que las opiniones que ofrecen ocasión de una mayor controversia y que aquí se exponen, tienen, sin embargo, valiosos elementos de significado científico. Deliberadamente he introducido el mismo concepto en contextos ligeramente diferentes y en ciertos lugares donde creí se precisaba de la discusión. El libro está cuidadosamente estructurado, pero, para aquellos lectores que sólo deseen escudriñar, la mayor parte de los capítulos les ofrecerán todos los elementos adecuados para llevarlo a cabo. Fueron demasiadas las personas que me ayudaron a configurar las opiniones que expongo sobre estos temas como para poder expresarles mi reconocimiento a todas ellas desde estas páginas, pero al releer los capítulos considero que me encuentro especialmente en deuda con Joseph Veverka y Frank Drake, ambos de la Cornell University, y con quienes durante los últimos años discutí tantos aspectos de esta obra. Lomberg will deliver the talk as a UC Regents' Lecturer sponsored by UCSD's Department of Psychology and The Laboratory for Applied Cognitive Research. Since the publication of "The Cosmic Connection" in 1972, Lomberg worked on virtually all of Sagan's projects to popularize science including most of his books, many of his magazine articles, the "nuclear winter" work, and the TV series "Cosmos," for which Lomberg won an Emmy Award for his work as chief artist. At the time of Sagan's death in December, Lomberg and Sagan were collaborating on the film version of Sagan's novel "Contact." In his talk, the artist will describe his work with Sagan, showing many examples of their work together and sharing personal recollections of the world-famous astronomer. Lomberg will deliver a second Regents lecture, "Messages Across Space and Time," from 4:15 p.m.--5:30 p.m., Jan. 29, Peterson Hall, Rm. 108. Calling themselves the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence in Exile, or SETI-X, the group claimed to have received an alien transmission of rearranged sound from the Voyager Golden Record, a phonograph album famously sent into outer space in 1977 on each of NASA’s two Voyager spacecraft (Figure 1). The Golden Record had been put together in the mid-1970s by a panel convened by astronomer Carl Sagan, and it held a program of sounds and music of Earth, representing to imagined aliens our planet’s soundscapes, voices, and musical traditions. Since that time there have been numerous human space missions taking American astronauts to the Moon and international crews to orbiting space stations. Several space agencies are now working towards the next major space objective which is to send astronauts to Mars. This will undoubtedly be the most complex and far-reaching human space mission ever undertaken. Because of its large scale and potentially high cost it is inevitable that such a mission will be an international collaborative venture with a profile that will be world- wide. Although science, technology and engineering have made considerable contributions to human space missions and will be very much involved with a human Mars mission, there has been scant regard for artistic and cultural involvement in these missions. Space agencies have, however, realised the influence of public perception on space funding outcomes and for some time have strived to engage the public in these space missions. This has provided an opportunity for an art and cultural involvement, but there is a problem for art engaging with space missions as currently there is no artform specific to understanding and tackling the issues of art beyond our planet.

Podríamos añadir otro matiz: el único tema es el miedo del hombre a estar solo. Por eso tantas historias en nuestras búsquedas en el espacio, así como nuestro empeño narrativo por establecer cadenas hacia atrás y hacia delante, o nuestras aspiración de trascendencia a través del arte o de la religión. Así puede indentificarse en algunos episodios recientes, en los que es posible desplegar nociones arquitectónicas que tienen que ver con la escala o la capacidad de transmitir mensajes, como la placa de la sonda Pioneer, el disco de oro de la Voyager o la nave Rosetta, que sirven también para trazar algunas conexiones con la investigación como viaje de escalas a través del tiempo, o con el proyecto, como mensaje hacia un tiempo futuro. We could add another nuance: the only issue is the fear of human being to be alone. Therefore there are so many stories in our search outside in the space, together with our narrative task of setting chains behind and forward, or our purpose of a transcendent meaning through art or religion. This could be registered in some recent episodes, where we can talk about architectural concepts related to scale or the skill to send messages, such as the Pioneer, the golden record of Voyager, Rosetta, useful to draw interesting connections with research as a journey through space and time or with architectural project, as a code to a future time.
