The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and mortality of CP among patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Study design and methods: This multicenter, open-label, uncontrolled clinical trial is currently being conducted at nine hospitals in Chile. Patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 with less than 14 days since symptom onset were eligible. Enrolled patients were classified into four groups: Patients with cancer and severe COVID-19. Patients with cancer and non-severe COVID-19. Patients with severe COVID-19 and patients with non-severe COVID-19 only. The intervention involved two 200-cc. CP transfusions with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG titers ≥ 1:320 collected from COVID-19-recovered donors. Results: 192 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 received CP transfusions. At the first transfusion, 90.6% fulfilled the criteria for severity, and 41.1% required mechanical ventilation. 11.5% of the patients had cancer. Overall, 7-day and 30-day mortality since the first CP transfusion was 5.7% and 16.1% respectively. There were no differences at either time point in mortality between the four groups. Patients on mechanical ventilation when receiving CP had higher mortality rates than those who were not: 22.8% (95% C.I. 14.1-33.6%) vs. 11.5% (95% C.I. 6.3–18.9%) (p=0.037). Overall, 30-day mortality was higher in patients over 65 than in younger patients: 26.7% (95% C.I. 16.1– 39.7%) (p=0.019). Severe adverse events were reported in four patients (2.1%) with an overall transfusion-related lung injury rate of 1.56%. No CP-related deaths occurred. Discussion: CP is safe when used in patients with COVID-19 even when also presenting severity criteria or risk factors. Our mortality rate is comparable to reports from larger studies. Controlled clinical trials are required to determine efficacy. Conclusion: CP is safe when used in the COVID-19 population even for those who present severity criteria and/or risk factors for poor prognosis including cancer. In-depth analyses of the serological and molecular characteristics of CP are needed to evaluate the efficacy of this intervention through controlled clinical trials. The result of this analysis approach supports the process of choosing a journal to submit a manuscript, especially in knowledge domains where the author, whether novice or not, has failed to follow in detail the evolution of the domain. Moreover, the same approach can be used to an overall assessment of the production of researchers, research groups, institutions and countries. The conceptual foundations of the approach are volume and citation indicators of scientific journals articles. In particular, the proposed approach is based on SCImago Journal Rank index, the h-index and the annual number of articles published. The above indicators are transformed into percentiles and then displayed on a graph, integrating in this diagram the set of articles to be analyzed. The analysis approach was implemented in Sweet Spots for Manuscripts, online software based on open source components. As an example of its potential, an analysis of the 2014 research activity of the institutions belonging to the Council of Rectors of Chilean Universities is presented.

    Spring 2012 27 Biocultural Ethics: Recovering the Vital Links between the Inhabitants, Their Habits, and Habitats Ricardo Rozzi* Biocultural homogenization involves three major drivers: (a) the physical barrier to every- day contact with biodiversity derived from the rapid growth of urban population, (b) the conceptual barrier derived from the omission in formal and non-formal education of native languages that contain a broad spectrum of traditional ecological knowledge and values, and (c) political barriers associated with the elimination or reduction of the teaching of ethics under the prevailing neoliberal economy governance since the 1960s. Biocultural ethics aims at overcoming these barriers by recovering the vital links between biological and cultural diversity, between the habits and the habitats of the inhabitants. These links are acknowledged by early Western philosophy, Amerindian traditional ecological knowledge, and contemporary ecological and evolutionary sciences, but have been lost in prevailing modern ethics. There is an overlooked diversity of forms of knowing and inhabiting regional ecosystems, each of them having diverse environmental and social consequences. A better understanding of the regionally diverse mosaics of ecosystems, languages, and cultures facilitates the distinction of specific causes and responsible agents of environmental problems, and the disclosure of sustainable practices, forms of ecological knowledge and values that offer already existing options to solve socio-ecological problems. I. INTRODUCTION Modern ethics has decoupled human habits from the habitats where they take place, as if humans and their identities could exist in isolation from their habitats and other-than-human co-inhabitants. The conceptual omission of the links between habitats and habits has further sustained a Eurocentric approach projected onto the colonies with minimal consideration for the native ethos: as if indigenous ethics, and their intricate links with their habitats, would not exist or would be irrelevant.

A firm commitment to access and equity has led to ever-increasing Tertiary Education numbers of young people entering tertiary education, which poses challenges for financing and quality. The government has successfully responded to these Public Disclosure Authorized in Chile challenges, but, as enrolment continues to grow, new policies will need to be implemented to achieve the goal of a world-class tertiary education system responsive to the requirements of a global economy. This joint OECD and World Bank review gives a brief overview of post-secondary education in Chile and describes its development over the past twenty years. It presents an analysis of the system and identifies key directions for policy reform in light of the challenges encountered by officials, communities, enterprises, educators, parents and students. It concludes with a set of key recommendations concerning the structure of the system and its labour market relevance; access and equity, governance and management; research, development and innovation; internationalisation; and financing. However, little is known about collaborative efforts among educational scholars in Latin America. In order to address this gap in our knowledge, a Social Network Analysis (SNA) is used to examine the relationships and patterns that emerge from a dataset of co-authored scholarly publications among Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in Chile and Latin America, taking into account a purposeful dataset retrieved from Web of Science (WoS). Based on several sociograms and networks’ centrality indicators (density, degree, betweenness, and closeness), along with bibliometric results, this study focuses on detecting which educational actors are in positions of leadership in the collaborative networks, exploring the existence of clusters, and identifying what countries, institutions and scholars are acting as positive contributors in the collaborative network as a whole.

Abstract In the last decade, the organization of several territorially based social movements in Chile has expressed a significant level of social discomfort about the political and economic system of the country. The central objective of this dissertation is to analyze how motivations, achievements, and failures of these movements have a dialectical relationship with the spatial features, specifically with the concepts place, territory and scale. Critical geography, political geography, and social movements’ studies provide the theoretical framework for the analysis, highlighting the significance of social movements as producers of collective knowledge. This research used a qualitative approach with a mix-methods design that included archival and online research, as well as 58 in-deep semi-structured interviews conducted in a 6-months fieldwork in Chile. Collected data identified 21 cases of territorially based social movements during the period 2006-2016 that reached different levels of significance.
