Over 120,000 Customers Total energy saving AED 3.2 Billion in 2019. A total of 320.366 Km of district cooling networks Dubai, UAE; 28 January 2020: Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, reported a net profit of AED871 Mn in 2019, representing a remarkable increase of 8.3% year‐over‐year (YoY). The company has achieved a total revenue of AED2.19 Bn an increase of 7.9% YoY. Commenting on Empower's financial results at the annual press conference, Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, said: “2019 has been a milestone year for Empower, given the remarkable net profit increase, in addition to the significant expansion in number of district cooling plants, district cooling pipeline network, customer base and the number of buildings connected with our district cooling services.” The number of buildings that Empower provides with it’s district cooling services exceeded 1,180 and the customer base has reached to more than 120,000. The total cooling capacity has reached 1,530,000 Refrigeration Tons (RT) during 2019 that covered various projects, such as Deira Waterfront, Blue Waters, Jumeirah Group, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Business Bay, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Design District and International Media Production Zone, amongst others. -

Macdonald, Chair The overarching objective of this research project is to explore and document the urban history of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It is organized as a comparative study of urban planning and design processes in Abu Dhabi during three major periods of the city’s development following the discovery of oil: (1) 1960-1966: Sheikh Shakhbut Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule (2) 1966-2004: Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s rule; and (3) 2004-2013: Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s rule. The intention of this study is to go beyond a typical historical narrative of sleepy village-turned-metropolis, to compare and contrast the different visions of each ruler and his approach to development; to investigate the role and influence of a complex network of actors, including planning institutions, architects, developers, construction companies and various government agencies; to examine the emergence and use of comprehensive development plans and the policies and values underlying them; as well as to understand the decision-making processes and design philosophies informing urban planning, in relation to the political and economic context of each period. -

09 August 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Marka Announces Q2 2016 Financial Results Strong growth in revenue – an increase of 18.2% over Q1 2016 19 new fashion/beauty, hospitality and sports outlets to open in 2016 Expansion plans continue in the UAE and across the GCC throughout 2016 Dubai, United Arab Emirates – 9 August 2016: Marka PJSC (DFM: MARKA), the first retail- focused listed company in the UAE, today released its interim financial results for the second quarter of 2016. For the three months ending 30th June 2016, the company reported total revenue of AED 89.5 million, an increase of 18.2% compared to Q1 2016. Total losses reported for the period were AED 18.72 million. However net operating loss for Q2 2016 was AED 3.83 million. The Q2 2016 results were achieved despite a generally slower retail season during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Khaled Almheiri Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of Marka, said, “Marka has been extremely busy during the second quarter of 2016, launching the world’s first Harper’s BAZAAR Café in Dubai Design District (d3) in partnership with Hearst Magazines International, and completing franchise agreements for Reem Al Bawadi restaurants in Kuwait, Bahrain, KSA and Lahore, Pakistan. Saruq Al-Hadid to Jebel Ali: Dubai’s Evolving Trading Culture by Robert Mogielnicki ecent discoveries at the Saruq Al-Hadid archeological site located outside of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) demonstrate the emirate’s connection to key trading routes dating as far back as 4,000 years ago. In light of the July 2016 inauguration of the Saruq Al-Hadid Archeology Museum by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, it is clear that the government is making a conscious effort to reconstruct this early trading identity and promote it broadly to the public. Sheikh Mohammed’s comments at the museum’s opening reinforced the links between the archeological museum and Dubai’s trading culture: “Museums reflect the culture of the nation.”1 Saruq Al-Hadid While the museum links the region’s early trading culture to that of today, it is important to note the contin- ual evolution of Dubai’s mercantile traditions, which can be broadly categorized into three distinct phases: i) Saruq Al-Hadid, ii) Dubai Creek and iii) the proliferation of free zones. The evolution in the location of trading hubs and nature of trade over these periods had clear implications for the infrastructure of modern Dubai and for the identity of its inhabitants. Indeed, Dubai’s free zones are the modern-day manifestations of the trading culture that started in Saruq Al-Hadid and further developed around Dubai Creek. 10 Gulf Affairs II. -
