Multiple native tribes lived in the surrounding area for thousands of years, and the Lenape tribe was the first nation to live on this island, calling it Manahatta. The island was an ecological wonder at the time, due to its location at the meeting point of two rivers, supporting a wide variety of plant and animal life. The Lenape people hunted and gathered plant materials to feed their community and provide them with the tools, clothing, and materials that they used every day. They used young sapling trees to construct homes, covering them with bark and animal skins and leaving openings in the roof to allow the smoke from cooking fires to escape. They traded materials with other First Nations in the surrounding area, including the Haudenosaunee, the Mohicans, and the Shinnecock. Today, most Lenape tribe members live in Delaware and New Jersey, honoring their cultural traditions while making use of modern conveniences. Some of the plants you see in this area of the park are the same species that existed here thousands of years ago. Can you find all four of the following native plants in this area of the park?     Historic Lower Manhattan To many people Lower Manhattan means financial district, where the large buildings are designed to facilitate the exchange of money. The buildings, streets and open spaces, however, recall events that gave birth to a nation and have helped shape the destiny of western civilization. Places such as St. Paul's Chapel and Federal Hall National Memorial exemplify a number of sites which have been awarded special status by the Federal Government. The sites appearing in this guide are included in the following programs which have given them public recognition and helped to assure their survival. National Park Service Since its inauguration in 1916, the National Park Service has been dedicated to the preservation and management of our country's unique national, historical and recreational areas. The first national park in the world—Yellowstone—has been followed by the addition of over 300 sites in the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. American landscape painting was born on the Hudson, as was the landscape conservation movement. The Shakers led by Ann Lee emigrated from England to thrive at New Lebanon, on the Hudson. The first commercially successful paddle steamboat line occurred not on the Mississippi, but on the Hudson, and America’s first regularly scheduled rail service connected New York City with Albany, the state capital at the mouth of the Hudson. Churchill first met Roosevelt at FDR’s country house at Hyde Park on the Hudson. It is not too much to say that the American dream itself was created and sustained on the Hudson. We familiarise ourselves with an approximately 80-mile long area, the heart of the valley where New Yorkers and others seeking refreshment and solace from concrete jungles have flocked since the Industrial Revolution. When viewed from the water, the Manhattan skyscrapers in their majestic profusion echo the Palisades, the dramatic natural cliffs rising vertically from the water along the west side of the lower Hudson River. Spanning the time between their formation 200 million years ago and the topping on May 2013 of America’s tallest building, One World Trade Center, is a story of an extraordinary expansion and respect for life along the shores of the Hudson, an area of such valued natural beauty it is called America’s Rhineland.
