The Genus Coprinus and Allies
BRITISH MYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY FUNGAL EDUCATION & OUTREACH— [email protected] The genus Coprinus and allies Most of the species previously in the genus Coprinus and commonly known as Inkcaps were transferred into three new genera in 2001 on the basis of their DNA: Coprinopsis, Coprinellus and Parasola, leaving just three British species in Coprinus in the strict sense. The name Inkcap comes from the characteristic habit of most of these species of dissolving into a puddle of black liquid when mature - or ‘deliquescing’. In the past this liquid was indeed used for ink. Many Coprinus comatus species are very short-lived – some fruit bodies survive less than a day – Photo credit: Nick White and they occur in moist conditions throughout the year in a range of different habitats according to species including soil, wood, vegetation, roots and dung. Caps are thin-fleshed, usually white when young and often appear coated in fine white powder or fibrils called ‘veil’; they range in size from minute (less than 0.5cm) to more than 5cm across. Gills start out pale but soon turn black with the deliquescing spores. Stems are white and in some species very tall in relation to cap size. One species, Coprinopsis atramentaria, has a seriously unpleasant effect if eaten a few hours either side of consuming alcohol, acting like the drug ‘Antabuse’ used to treat alcoholics. Campus As Lagoas-Marcosende Vigo, 36310 Spain Abstract — Species of Volvariella reported from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal) and Balearic Islands (Spain) are listed, with data on their distribution, ecology and phenology. For each taxon a list of all collections examined and a map of its distribution is given. According to our revision 12 taxa of Volvariella occur in the area. Key words — Agaricales, Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota, biodiverstity, Pluteaceae Introduction Volvariella Speg. is a genus traditionally classified in the family Pluteaceae Kotl. & Pouzar (Agaricales, Basidiomycota), but recent molecular research has challenged its monophyly and taxonomic position within the Agaricales (Moncalvo et al. 2002, Matheny et al. 2006). Its main characteristics are the pluteoid basidiomes (i.e. free lamellae; context of pileus and stipe discontinuous), universal veil present in mature specimens as a saccate volva at stipe base, brownish-pink spores in mass and mainly the inverse lamellar trama. It comprises about 50 species (Kirk et al. 2008) and is widely distributed around the world (Singer 1986). Monographic studies of the genus have been mostly carried out in Europe (Kühner & Romagnesi 1956, Orton 1974, 1986; Boekhout 1990) North America (Shaffer 1957) and Africa (Heinemann 1975, Pegler 1977). In the Iberian Peninsula (Spain, Portugal) and Balearic Islands (Spain) the records of Volvariella are scattered, as they are often included in general checklists and prior to our study the only taxonomic paper on this genus, in this area, was an article by Vila et al. -

Accepted 11 November, 2011 A new genus of Agaricales, Leucocalocybe was erected for a species Tricholoma mongolicum in this study. Leucocalocybe was distinguished from the other genera by a unique combination of macro- and micro-morphological characters, including a tricholomatoid habit, thick and short stem, minutely spiny spores and white spore print. The assignment of the new genus was supported by phylogenetic analyses based on the LSU sequences. The results of molecular analyses demonstrated that the species was clustered in tricholomatoid clade, which formed a distinct lineage. Key words: Agaricales, taxonomy, Tricholoma, tricholomatoid clade. INTRODUCTION The genus Tricholoma (Fr.) Staude is typified by having were re-described. Based on morphological and mole- distinctly emarginate-sinuate lamellae, white or very pale cular analyses, T. mongolicum appears to be aberrant cream spore print, producing smooth thin-walled within Tricholoma and un-subsumable into any of the basidiospores, lacking clamp connections, cheilocystidia extant genera. Accordingly, we proposed to erect a new and pleurocystidia (Singer, 1986). Most species of this genus, Leucocalocybe, to circumscribe the unique genus form obligate ectomycorrhizal associations with combination of features characterizing this fungus and a forest trees, only a few species in the subgenus necessary new combination. -

ABSTRACT — Sampling and analysis of gasteroid agaricomycete species ( Phallomycetidae and Agaricomycetidae ) associated with relicts of native Espinal forests in the southeast region of Córdoba, Argentina, have identified twenty-nine species in fourteen genera: Bovista (4), Calvatia (2), Cyathus (1), Disciseda (4), Geastrum (7), Itajahya (1), Lycoperdon (2), Lysurus (2), Morganella (1), Mycenastrum (1), Myriostoma (1), Sphaerobolus (1), Tulostoma (1), and Vascellum (1). The gasteroid species from the sampled Espinal forests showed an overall similarity with those recorded from neighboring phytogeographic regions; however, a new species of Lysurus was found and is briefly described, and Bovista coprophila is a new record for Argentina. Studies in Fungi 4(1), 14–20, Doi 10.5943/sif/4/1/2 Abstract Present work describes two new records of Geastrum species from Central America, Geastrum echinulatum (Costa Rica) and G. rusticum, (Panama). Identification of species confirmed based on the macro- and micro-morphological analyses and the published literature of the two species. Field photographs, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, taxonomic observations and a map of collection sites are provided. Key words – Biodiversity – Earthstars – Fungi – Geastrales – Taxonomy Introduction Geastrum Pers. is a star-shaped gasteroid genus with worldwide distribution (Zamora et al. 2014). The taxonomic knowledge about this genus from Latin America has increased greatly in recent years (Zamora et al. 2013, Sousa et al. 2014a, 2015, Bautista-Hernández et al. 2015). This region has high potential for discovery of hidden diversity, mainly because the presence of tropical forests where there are possibly millions of unnamed fungal species (Hawksworth 2001). -

ERVIN The genus Astraeus, based on Geastrum hygrometricum Pers., was included in the genus Geaster until Morgan9 pointed out several differences which seemed to justify placing the fungus in a distinct genus. Morgan pointed out first, that the basidium-bearing hyphae fill the cavities of the gleba as in Scleroderma; se.cond, that the threads of the capillitium are. long, much-branched, and interwoven, as in Tulostoma; third, that the elemental hyphae of the peridium are scarcely different from the threads of the capillitium and are continuous with them, in this respect, again, agre.eing with Tulos toma; fourth, that there is an entire absence of any columella, and, in fact, the existence of a columella is precluded by the nature of the capillitium; fifth, that both thre.ads and spore sizes differ greatly from those of geasters.
