In general, applications can be classified into two broad end use groups: first, for those structures such as large buildings in which both the strength and the appearance of exposed wood members are of equal importance; and second, in landscape, park and garden structures where appearance is paramount. For both use-groups, Western Red Cedar offers the advantages of natural beauty, design flexibility, exceptional dimensional stability and long term durability. Decorative structures give substance to a garden, become focal points, and add interest and a touch of luxury. They make it possible to use the garden when it is wet, windy or just too hot. As supports for climbing plants they give us an extra planting dimension that allows us to appreciate fragrance and flowers close-up. Not all garden structures have a solely decorative value. Garden stores (sheds) and greenhouses can be highly decorative but they also serve more practical functions. Pergolas Pergolas originated as a framework for climbing plants such as grapevines. Some are designed on a massive scale with stout masonry columns and sturdy overhead beams. More compact versions work in smaller gardens. A pergola is basically a series of overhead beams supported by posts or columns. They are most often used over a terrace or patio to provide shade and increase the sense of enclosure.

F. Prosser. Today’s visitors to the Staunton Country Park, as well as feeding the wide variety of animals within the Farm Trail or walking around the lake and gardens of the country park, must wonder what the estate was like during the time of Sir George Thomas Staunton’s ownership of the estate. It was Sir George who kept on improving and creating this wonderful park and gardens, with glorious greenhouses filled with exotic plants, unusual temples, bridges across to the various islands on the lake, and other unique garden features and follies. Some still remain such as the Beacon, close to the road towards Rowlands Castle, and the Shell House or Staunton Memorial as 3 it also named, a little worse for wear these days but still giving us a glimpse of what it was like 180 years or more ago. This booklet looks at what garden features and follies still remain on the estate and sadly those that have disappeared for one reason or another over the years since Sir George Staunton death in 1859. Perhaps it is wrong to record Staunton’s garden and parkland structures as follies.

CAVES OF WONDER: THE LEGITIMACY OF THE GROTTO AS A SUBTERRANEAN LANDSCAPE ELEMENT by VANESSA D. BERNSTEIN (Under the Direction of Marianne Cramer) ABSTRACT This thesis explores the relevance of the grotto as an architectural type through time and will propose design possibilities for continuing this tradition in the twenty first century. Specifically, it investigates grotto works from the classical period through the twentieth century. Emphasis will be placed on the form, meaning, and purpose of the grotto as an underground chamber or passage. This thesis also considers the grotto as a platform for theoretical speculation on the implications of designing below the earth’s surface. The final component of the thesis is a design application comprised of three stories with corresponding collages that portray the design process for grotto inspired structures. INDEX WORDS: grottoes, nymphaea, fountain design, artificial caves, subterranean architecture, garden structures, follies, symbolism in architecture, survival of antiquity, visionary art, landscape architecture, historic preservation, cultural history CAVES OF WONDER: THE LEGITIMACY OF THE GROTTO AS A SUBTERRANEAN LANDSCAPE ELEMENT By VANESSA D.
