This year, because of an abundance of excellent entries, the entire issue is devoted to our winners. We’re running photos of the gardens, as well as an image of each “plan,” descriptions of each garden and a comment or two from the panel of judges. I thank Jeanne Weber, president of our Pennsylvania-Delaware chapter, for assistance in editing this issue. Finally, we‘ve lost a member or two on our Communications Committee, so if any of you out there with editing, writing and/or public relations experience would like to join us, please let us know. In the meantime, please keep the contributions to the magazine coming. Decorative structures give substance to a garden, become focal points, and add interest and a touch of luxury. They make it possible to use the garden when it is wet, windy or just too hot. As supports for climbing plants they give us an extra planting dimension that allows us to appreciate fragrance and flowers close-up. Not all garden structures have a solely decorative value. Garden stores (sheds) and greenhouses can be highly decorative but they also serve more practical functions. Pergolas Pergolas originated as a framework for climbing plants such as grapevines. Some are designed on a massive scale with stout masonry columns and sturdy overhead beams. More compact versions work in smaller gardens. A pergola is basically a series of overhead beams supported by posts or columns. They are most often used over a terrace or patio to provide shade and increase the sense of enclosure.

In short, the Fairhaven Neighborhood Plan, along with the Urban Village Plan should allow for the utilization of this urban area. The 15 different zoning areas ( +/-) should be replaced with the four as proposed by the merchants and property owners. Further, the development regulations for these areas should be simplified and clarified to allow development at least to the extent identified for the urban commercial areas in the Old Town and Samish plans. Our city must accommodate its growth. Fairhaven is the urban area that must be planned to accept higher density development to prevent the need to sprawl. All urban services are right there. Transportation connectivity is in place. Consumer services are available and will need to be promoted if the urban village is to thrive. Subjective goals such as protection of quality of life and protection of undefined views will result in a choking off of development that is needed to service the anticipate growth for our city. Further, the residential area to the south should be identified to allow the entire tool kit of in-fill alternatives, as well as multi-family. This is a transitional part of the neighborhood and will, in the years to come, act as the connector b/w the SFR neighborhoods of Edgemoor and Fairhaven commercial area.
