The Place-Names of County Kilkenny Acknowledgement The Kilkenny Archaeological Society is grateful to Mrs Sheila O ’Kelly for permission to re-issue this book. Notice On mature reflection the Commitee of the Society has decided to change the title of Owen O ’Kelly’s book from A History of County Kilkenny to The Place-Names of the County of Kilkenny. The new title is thought more exactly to describe the book. An alphabetical index has been added. Within the new material, Owen O ’Kelly’s book is reproduced complete and unaltered. The map on the cover (also reproduced inside) is made from a Grand Jury map. The Grand Juries were the forerunners of the County Councils. They commissioned maps which are now extremely rare. The Grand Jury maps predate the first edition of the Ordnance Survey maps and are of great interest because of the different spellings of place names. Thus they can be used to locate changes that have occurred. ISBN 0 9501687 8 5 Printed by BOETHIUS PRESS Kilkenny FOREWORD The publication of my late husband’s history of the place-names of Kilkenny is a re-issue of a work that was originally published in 1969 but has long since gone out of print and is very difficult to obtain. Many years of painstaking research and dedication went into the compilation of the original. But the task was of compelling interest to him and he would have been deeply gratified and proud that his book on the place-names is being republished by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society.

Gravestone Inscriptions at Mothel, Hugh Ryan. Co. Waterford Introduction Michael O'Donnel l. The Clyde Shipping Company Frank P.Murphy. Brother Jerome Fitzpatrick B. M. Coldrey. Townland List for Co. Kilkenny. Old Waterford Society Programme. FRONT COVER: The cover illustration shows the Clyde Shipping Company's SS. Formby, which is referred to in the history of the Company in this issue. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Waterford Corporation and to Waterford Regional Technical College for their valued assistance in the production of this issue. DECIES is published thrice yearly by the Old Waterford Society and is issued free to Members. All articles and illustrations are the copyright of contributors. The news that Waterford Corporation has acquired the former Methodist Church at Greyfriars for use as a Heritage Centre must be a source of considerable satisfaction to all who are interested in the history of the city. The lack of a civic museum in Waterford has long been felt and the new premises should admirably fill this need. Reginald's Tower which has done yeoman service for many years is not ideally suitable as a museum, being too small and its upper floors difficult of access. Nevertheless, while saluting the new centre, we must not forget to doff our hats to the venerable building. We would hope that , in addition to the objects found in the course of the recent excavations in the city centre, some of which are currently exhibited in Reginald's Tower, various other artefacts which have a strong Waterford link and which are housed elsewhere will find a resting place in the new centre.

It teaches terms associated with Irish genealogy and describes the contents, uses, and availability of major genealogical records. Use this outline to set meaningful research goals and to select the records which will help you achieve them. Usually, you will need to know the specific parish or town in Ireland where your ancestor was born before beginning your Irish research. Tips for finding your ancestor's place of origin are in the “Ireland Search Strategies” section of this outline. You will also need some basic understanding of genealogical research procedures before you begin to look for your ancestors. To help you understand the basics, the booklet, Guide to Research, are available at the Family History Library and at Family History Centers. Using This Outline Since several factors can affect your choice of records to search, this outline will help you evaluate the contents, reliability, availability, ease of use, time period covered, and the likelihood that your ancestor will be listed in these records.

  • Kilkenny County Council Annual Report 2019
KILKENNY COUNTY COUNCIL COMHAIRLE CHONTAE CHILL CHAINNIGH ANNUAL REPORT 2019 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Adopted by Kilkenny County Council on _______________ STATEMENT OF AN CATHAOIRLEACH It is a great privilege for me to introduce the Annual Report for 2019. This Annual Report details the wide variety of services provided by Kilkenny County Council to the people of Kilkenny City and County. We, the Council, play a key role in providing essential core services such as housing, roads, water, fire and emergency services and in supporting local communities through the arts, heritage, conservation, libraries and community and enterprise functions. In 2019, the provision of additional housing continued to remain a priority for Kilkenny County Council. The Housing Task Force set up in 2017 continued to play an important in working with the Executive to progress much needed new housing units. In 2019, the Council welcomed many dignitaries to the City & County both from home and abroad. This is an opportunity for us to showcase what is best in Kilkenny. In particular, we were pleased to welcome delegations from Moret-sur-Loing and Formigine to celebrate our St Patrick’s festivities. I also welcome the many awards bestowed on Kilkenny throughout the year. This is a recognition of the hard work of many communities across the County working in collaboration with Kilkenny County Council and many statutory agencies. These awards are a boost to many rural communities and also fosters greater community engagement and encourages other towns and villages to develop projects in their own communities. The allocation of funding under various schemes greatly assists in the development of our towns and villages.

Tree Preservation Orders G. List of Native Trees and Shrubs H. Protected views and prospects I. Record of Protected Structures J. Wind Energy Development Strategy K. Statement outlining compliance with Ministerial Guidelines L. Key Development Plan Objectives Planning Department Kilkenny County Council May 2014 Appendix A: Retail Strategy Appendix A: Retail Strategy A.1 Capacity Assessment The capacity assessment is the mechanism used to estimate the amount of additional expenditure that will occur in the County over the period of the Strategy to 2020. The 2007 Review considered capacity to 2020 but this review does not extend the period beyond 2020 (the life time of the next development plan). The key inputs and outputs to the capacity assessment are a derivation of the following: Step 1: Population and Expenditure Estimates; Population projections and per capita expenditure estimates – estimating the total amount of expenditure by the resident population of the county to 2020. Step 2: Turnover Estimates; estimating the total amount of turnover for retail outlets in the county to 2020. This includes inputting information from household and shopper surveys to determine leakage and trade draw. Step 3: Turnover Ratios; Calculating turnover ratios – turnover divided by floorspace. This includes a floorspace assessment ‐ a quantitative analysis of all available floorspace (trading and vacant) in the main centres within the catchment area. Step 4: Gross Additional Expenditure Potential – using the turnover estimates to 2020 to estimate the growth in spare expenditure capacity through the strategy years Step 5: Future Sources of Retail Sales; calculating the amount of expenditure that may occur through new retail developments (extant planning permissions) and increases in turnover efficiency.
