And I should say right off the bat that I was never a fan of that series - I was barely a fan of the X-Men, then and now! Gambit, Quicksilver, and Polaris immediately join up and get sent out on a variety of missions, none of which are particularly interesting or well-written. They stop him. There are also a few other Marvel superheroes making cameos but I have no clue who they are Fatale? The third and final adventure sees X-Factor crossing the All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X of Warlock and Magus. That said, David does give characters who we see only once, all the exposition for some reason. View all 4 comments. May 08, Sean Gibson rated it liked it. I want to like this, mainly because it seems like the best place to get some Gambit action these days. I'm really trying to give it the benefit of the doubt. Not bad so far, but not knocking my socks off. Apr 11, Judah Radd rated it it was amazing Shelves: marvel-comics. Killer start to a series! This is the kind of character driven, unique shit that makes people love mutant comics. There are a lot of B List favs that pop up. Doug, Warlock, Danger I love these characters, and Peter David is writing them very well! I always groan All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X he shows up, and this was me Killer start to a series! I always groan when he shows up, and this was mercifully not annoying. Who knows. Overall, this was a very pleasant surprise. Oct 15, Adam Stone rated it liked it Shelves: superhero-comicsx-men-universe. After a long disappointing stretch near the end of his initially excellent X-Factor run, Peter David managed to stick the landing and give a satisfying conclusion to his run. Something neither Bendis, Remender, or Aaron could do with their much shorter runs on X-titles. ALl New X-Factor does not start nearly as well as any of those series. It's fine. It's the story of a corporate funded superhero team featuring Polaris, Gambit, and Quicksilver, with more familiar X-faces joining before the conclusion of the volume. Tonally, it works. Peter David is still Mr. Dad Joke but the humor works in service of the story. If you've been a fan of any of David's work, I'd check this out. It's not his best, but it's better than a lot of the other X-books of its time. And if you're into Polaris or Gambit or Quicksilver, you might love this. Jan 26, Nate rated it liked it. While I like the look and feel of this title I never fell in love with this. It's smart and clever and I can't think of a All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X where I found Quicksilver to be more compelling but the rest of the team and the corporate structure it operates under never hit home for me. Apr 17, Brent rated it liked it Recommends it for: fans of these fine creators All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X Marvel superhero comics. Shelves: comicsfictionsuperhero. Did I actually read ALL this earlier? Lots of robot X-Men return, along with a few favorite mutants. Peter David serves familiar characters well, as do Camuncoli, et. Mildly recommended. Jul 04, Shannon Appelcline rated it really liked it Shelves: comics-marvelcomicscomics-marvel-xmen. A totally revamped cast has helped David to really revitalize his X-Factor franchise. What he has here is All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X good mix of the old and the new, and I'm really thrilled to see how they all move forward. The plot is almost irrelevant next to all of that, so I'll mostly comment that I like his use of old continuity. Jan 26, Mike rated it liked it Shelves: starters-sequential-artgraphic-novels. Quick thoughts: Although it's a mixed bag, there's a lot of potential here. David's still finding the proper pacing for his new team, but the line-up is good, the corporate angle is intriguing, Gambit makes a perfect pov character, and the banter is as entertaining as ever. Aug 05, Renata rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novelfiction. One day I hope Marvel will meet the demand for a comic that strictly follows the adventures of Gambit and his cats. Until then, there's this I guess. Sep 18, Lionel rated it liked it Shelves: comicsgraphics X-Factor assemble. Aug 23, C rated it liked it Shelves: merry-marvel-mutant-mayhem. I love Peter David writing X-characters. He always has a fresh and exciting take on the mutant universe. I was sad to see his long x-factor run end, but excited to see what he could do with a new team. And this volume Well, it probably All-New X-Factor Volume 1: Not Brand X an extra star because I trust David to take it somewhere interesting but so far it is slow and meandering and well, just not that interesting. I'm in for the next volume, but I'm not sure that I would be if I didn't explicitly trust the writer. Sep 27, Shannon rated it really liked it. By this point I was sick and tired of the constant relaunching, renumbering, and revamping that Marvel was doing, and I mostly quit reading anything Marvel related. • Holding out for a Hero(Ine): an Examination of the Presentation and Treatment of Female Superheroes in Marvel Movies Robyn Joffe
Holding Out for a Hero(ine): An Examination of the Presentation and Treatment of Female Superheroes in Marvel Movies Robyn Joffe Abstract Prior to the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Captain Marvel (2019), the way that female characters from the Marvel Comics’ canon were realized onscreen was problematic for several reasons and encumbered by issues rooted in the strong female character trope and its postfeminist origins. A close examination of three Marvel superheroines—Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, and Mystique—reveals that while they initially appear to be positioned as equal to their male teammates, they are consistently burdened with difficulties and challenges that men never have to face. The filmmakers’ focus on these women’s appearance and sex appeal, their double standard for violent women, and their perception of a woman’s role, create a picture of “strong” women that is questionable at best and damaging at worst. Keywords: Marvel, postfeminism, sexualization, infantilization, maternalism Introduction The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a media franchise and shared universe, owned by Marvel Studios and currently consists of twenty feature films, seven television series, one digital series, assorted direct-to-video short films, tie-in comic books, and other mixed media products. It is a shared universe that is actively expanding as more and more properties are slated for release. The X-Men film series, until recently owned by 20th Century Fox, is one of the interconnecting series of films based on specific characters from Marvel Comics. It currently consists of eleven films and two television series, with more to be released this year.

But women’s roles in comics have often been diminished as they become victims, damsels in distress, and sidekicks. This thesis explores the problems that female characters often face in comic books, but it also shows the positive representation that new creators have introduced over the years.

Palabras clave: género, cine, cómic, representación de la feminidad, co-educación audiovisual ABSTRACT DE CLAVE EN GÉNERO NARRATIVAS X-Men, one of the most popular superhero comic books, is a series based on characters whose powers are the consequence of a genetic mutation. The concepts and plots of the original comic books were successfully adapted to Hollywood cinema, a hegemonic industry in the context of the contemporary mundialized culture. From the perspective of gender, this article aims to critically analyse certain female characters, which are narratively relevant, and their connection to the stereotype of the femme fatale. FEMALES AND FEMINISM RECLAIM THE MAINSTREAM: NEW SUPERHEROINES IN MARVEL COMICS By Sara Marie Kern A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Middle Tennessee State University December 2015 Thesis Committee: Dr. Martha Hixon, Chair Dr. David Lavery I dedicate this research to real-life superheroines like my great-grandmother, who risked her reputation to educate women about their bodies. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe an immense debt to my family for supporting me in the pursuit of this degree, which at times seemed unachievable. Their unwavering emotional support and willingness to sacrifice for my benefit was at times overwhelming, and their generosity truly made this dream possible. I am likewise indebted to Dr. Martha Hixon and Dr. David Lavery, who encouraged me to push forward after a year-long furlough; Dr. Hixon’s consistent enthusiasm for my topic—and then my second topic—sustained me when the work was daunting. Finally I would like to thank the other contributors without whom this research would not exist: the creative teams for Thor, Ms. Marvel¸ and Storm; the librarians at the James E. Walker, UC Berkeley, and Berkeley Public libraries; and David Pemberton, who brought me back to Marvel, and helped to keep me sane. Note: the images reproduced in this thesis appear under the Fair Use agreement, and all copyrights remain with DC, Marvel Comics, and Avatar Press. I owe special thanks to these publications for their cooperation. iii ABSTRACT Representations of females in visual media continue to be problematic. As media studies increasingly reveals the influence of visual representation upon our internalized ideologies, the significance of positive female representation only increases.

  • Representations of Hiv/Aids in Popular American Comic Books, 1981- 1996
REPRESENTATIONS OF HIV/AIDS IN POPULAR AMERICAN COMIC BOOKS, 1981- 1996 William Richard Avila A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Jeffrey Brown, Advisor Michael Decker Graduate Faculty Representative William Albertini Timothy Messer-Kruse © 2021 William Richard Avila All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeffery Brown, Advisor From 1981-1996, the United States experienced an epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) that held profound implications for issues ranging from civil rights, public education, and sexual mores, to government accountability, public health, and expressions of heterosexism. Popular comic books that broached the subject of HIV/AIDS during the U.S. epidemic elucidate how America’s discourse on the disease evolved in an era when elected officials, religious leaders, legal professionals, medical specialists, and average citizens all struggled to negotiate their way through a period of national crisis. The manner whereby comic book authors, illustrators, and publishers engaged the topic of HIV/AIDS changed over time but, because comic books are an item of popular culture primarily produced for a heterosexual male audience, such changes habitually mirrored the evolution of the nation’s mainstream, heteronormative debates regarding the epidemic and its sociocultural and political implications. Through studying depictions of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in popular comic books, alterations in the heterocentric, national discourse emerge revealing how homophobic dismissals of the “gay plague” in the early 1980s gave way to heterosexual panic in the mid-1980s, followed by the epidemic’s reinterpretation as a national tragedy in the late-1980s.
