  • Antolini, Retta Maniera Di Scivere Per Il Clarinetto (1813)
Francesco Antolini La Retta Maniera di Scrivere per il Clarinetto (The Right Way to Write for the Clarinet) Milan (1813) Translated by Sion M. Honea 1 Translator’s Preface Antolini’s book is an interesting precursor to what would become the standard approach to the treatment of orchestration in the form of the treatises by Georg Kastner, Traité Général d’Instrumentation (1837) and Hector Berlioz Grand Traité d’Instrumentation et d’Orchestration (1843). What makes it interesting is not that it is nearly exclusively devoted to the issues of only one instrument, which was more nearly the earlier norm, but that it represents a time when the evolution of instruments of all types was happening so rapidly and with so many innovations, even so, in regard to physical development of the clarinet Antolini is conservative, advocating the five-key instrument and viewing even the six-key one skeptically. Rather, what makes Antolini’s book particularly interesting is that it is so revealing of a liminal period in which writing for these rapidly developing instruments was still for most composers so mysterious a practice and when the demand for expanded harmonic potential was accelerating. The author does give practical information about range and particular difficulties, especially those associated with different keys for an instrument only just emerging from its diatonic forebears, and for which he finds it only natural to give parallel but separate “diatonic” and “chromatic” fingering charts. The bulk of his treatment, however, centers on the mere technique of writing for the clarinet, of how to figure out the pitch level and key for the written parts of the transposing instrument, a term to which Antolini objects; indeed, it is only this preoccupation with transposition that justifies the inclusion of a section in the appendix on the horn and trumpet.

  • A Global Dao: Diagnoses and Prescriptions for Artificial Reductive Binaries in the West and the East
A Global Dao: Diagnoses and Prescriptions for Artificial Reductive Binaries in The West and The East by Aaron Amon Greene Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences, University of Washington, 2017 Associate of Arts, South Puget Sound Community College, 2015; Associate of Applied Sciences (Business Administration), S.P.S.C.C., 2015 Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Humanities in the Simon Fraser University /Department of Humanities Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences © [Aaron Amon Greene] 2020 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY [2020] Approval Name: Aaron Amon Greene Degree: Master of Arts Title: A Global Dao: Diagnoses and Prescriptions for Artificial Reductive Binaries in The West and The East Examining Committee: Chair: David Mirhady Professor Paul Crowe Senior Supervisor Associate Professor Luke Clossey Supervisor Associate Professor Stephen Duguid Internal Examiner Professor Emeritus Date Defended/Approved: August 21, 2020 ii Abstract The arbiters of the subject of Daoism have assumed authority to determine what does or does not merit inclusion through a few select means; either through a circumscribed scholastic lens or via cultural/religious authority typically predicated on established traditions. This thesis attempts to explain the ways in which both approaches tend to minimize relevant or qualifying contributions to a subject of Religious Studies such as Daoism. Deconstructing these reductive approaches requires first exploring them on their own terms, establishing how they narrow the aperture of consideration, and demonstrating their highly limited applicability in forming a more comprehensive understanding. Both the presuppositional tendencies of essentialism in Western academia and traditionalism in Eastern mores serve to create false binaries that can exclude many potential contributors to ongoing discourses.

  • Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band Guide
Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band The Beatles-1966 Album Cover Tonality:E Major Texture: Homophonic and ‘With a Little Help From My Antiphonal phrasing Rhythm: Swung-tied Friends’ quavers Tempo: 112 BPM Time signature: 4/4 Other Features: Melodic movement in bass line THE BEATLES - SGT PEPPERS… "1 ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’ (Track 2) The song moves from track 1-2 without a break introducing the character of Billy Shears (the singer of the melody-Ringo Starr). Ringo was the drummer in the Beatles. Structure ! The accompanying chords ‘plod’ along in a crotchet rhythm (1 beat per chord), you can hear this particularly on the piano. The overall rhythm of the backing and vocal melody is of a steady shuffle which is found in rock and roll. A shuffle beat essentially breaks up each crotchet (1 beat note) into a triplet, the first two being tied to each other. The vocal melody is swung rather than played straight quavers. What is interesting about the melody is that after the first note, the shuffle beat places each of the important words in the text, do, sang, tune, stand, walk and me just slightly before the beat making them prominent and having greater emphasis. The tied quavers on each of these notes create a sense of syncopation in the rhythm of the melody. The sequential movement between the first four notes of bar 1, and the first four notes of bar 2, help to give it a sense of shape and balance, and all of this within the narrow range of a perfect fifth, E to B, simple, but extremely effective.

  • PPI Syen FORUM
PPI SyEN WELCOME EMAIL: [email protected] Welcome to this special 100th edition of PPI Systems Engineering Newsjournal! As I reflect on a milestone such as this, I see EDITORIAL STAFF a similarity to other milestones such as New Editor-in-Chief Year’s Eve: a time when we look back with Robert Halligan appreciation, gratitude, and openness to Managing Editor learning; when we look forward with René King anticipation and resolutions; and when we Editor and Compositor gather with friends and family to celebrate. Kevin Nortrup Looking back: PPI SyEN has a lengthy and rich tradition of Editor Ralph Young excellence in bringing news, information, and perspective to the systems-engineering community. Much of that impressive Contributing Editors John Fitch, Emmanuel Abuede, legacy results from the tireless efforts of my predecessor as Eduardo Muñoz, Alwyn Smit editor, Dr. Ralph Young, whose shoes I will be endeavoring to fill. PRODUCTION STAFF Those high standards of quality and value are just as important and as relevant for this 100th edition as they were for the first. Marketing Manager Benjamin Bryant Looking forward: However, the world isn’t the same as it was Graphic Designer when PPI SyEN first launched. Complexity seems greater, and Matthew Wong time seems more scarce, more precious. There are more things Marketing Coordinator to know and more ways to seek to know them, yet sense-making Rebeca Carneiro seems ever more difficult. In response, PPI SyEN is stretching, growing, and adapting to bring even greater value to you, our readers. • We’re putting together a larger, more diverse team of individuals to research and to produce content.
