ABSTRACT: This paper critically negotiates the concept of the tourist landscape and proceeds, through a comparative cross-cultural empirical study, to test its basic conceptual premises in one upland and one seaside tourist destination, in Central Europe and in the Mediterranean. The conceptualization and employment of the term ‘tourist landscape’, in the social sciences and beyond, has been mostly intuitive and lacking a rigorous and broad-based conceptualization and empirical verification, incorporating its viewers’/users’ perceptions. On the basis of a conceptual model of the tourist landscape, the paper assesses conceptions and perceptions of the ‘tourist landscape’ and its constituent ele- ments by tourists, locals, and tourism stakeholders in Zwierzyniec, Poland and Chios Island, Greece. During the seminar, the “Guide for Teachers” was presented, which the co-organisers jointly developed and which includes theory and information on the Blue Economy, tables / graphics with associations and organisations that support same, as well as class plans and ideas for Projects inside and outside the classroom, so that teachers can involve students in them and raise the awareness on Blue Economy issues. This guide will soon be available through the project website ( http://www.blue-schools.eu/ ) in Greek too. At the same time, a reference was made by the project leader (Remi Bellia, Petra Patrimonia Corsica) to the European Competition that has just started with the vision to connect many coastal and island schools in order to gather innovative ideas and solutions related to the Blue Philosophy. The first speaker, Mrs. Suzana Laskaridis, spoke about the educational activities of the Ekaterini Laskaridis Foundation but also about the Cyclical Economy through the company Blue Cycle.

After the Greco-Turkish war of 1919–1922, 1.2 million Greek Orthodox were forcibly resettled from Turkey to Greece, increasing the host population by more than 20% within a few months. To examine the long-term effects of this event, we build a novel geocoded dataset locating refugee settlements across the universe of more than four thousand Greek municipali- ties that existed in 1920. Using a battery of empirical strategies relying on different margins of spatial and temporal variation in the refugee inflow, we find that localities with a greater share of Greek refugees in 1923 display higher level of prosperity and industrialization sixty years after the event. These long-run benefits of refugees appear to be driven by the provision of new agricultural know-how and the transfer of technological knowledge in textile, which fostered growth through higher diversity in complementary skills. The economic gains of the resettle- ment were lower in places where refugees were clustered in separate enclaves and where their skills were less easily transferable due to local geographic conditions.
