As we discussed, I have accepted a new position in Ottawa and will be moving there at the end of the month. Consequently I will be unable to continue my service as a member of the Board of Governors. It has been my distinct pleasure to serve as a member of this Board, both during my first term from 2000 until 2004 and again from 2011 until now. Exhibition Place is a very special place and I am confident that its future is very bright. I would like to acknowledge Diane Young and her excellent staff and my fellow Board members for their collegiality and you for your leadership. Thank you for offering me this opportunity to serve. It has been a pleasure. Today I went for a walk around Exhibition Place to see the cherry blossoms and was extremely saddened to see that the area outside the Musik club is now under construction and the Greek God sculptures are being protected by nothing more than flimsy plastic fencing. I am terribly concerned for the well being of these sculptures that were originally commissioned for the public. At first I was bothered by the fact that they were hidden from view on private property, but now I see that they may become damaged by this heavy construction. Is there any update regarding them being moved to the AllStream Centre property? Any information would be greatly appreciated. lfthere is anyone else I should raise these concerns with, please let me know. I have attached a picture with images of the sculptures in the construction site. Cox sculptures at Exhibition Place be returned to the public realm. I was appalled to read in the Toronto Stat: that these are no longer available to be seen without paying admission to the Musik nightclub. http://read.thestar.com/?origref=#!/article/53792349ec069lfe75000170-muzik-nightclub~ fences-in-public-art These sculptures were meant to be accessible and enjoyed by all, especially children. I hardly think that children are patrons ofthe nightclub and no one should have to pay admission to see these sculptures via entry Musik. As E.B. Cox's fatnily states, these sculptures should be in a proper garden and not a beer garden. Toronto's public art belong to the people of Toronto and. it must be accessible to the public. Take Care, Loretta Ryan Sent from my iPad · 1 ca From: Kathy Sutton To: Dianne Young, CEO, Exhibition Place CC: Mike Layton, Councillor, and member ofthe Exhibition Place Board of Governors Date: 20 May 2014 (by email) SUBJECT: THE GARDEN OF THE GREEK GODS Dear Ms Young: I trust that the Board of Governors of Exhibition Place is sincere in its objective (as stated in its 2009-2012 Strategic Plan) to "preserve and promote our public art and the heritage of the site." Your email of Friday May 16 (5:24 pm) indicated that the sculpture has been inspected, and that you had directed the contractor and tenant to add "improved protection," which you told me was already in place. Please be advised that I visited the site on Sunday morning to see this new "protection" and I consider it completely inadequate. The staff of Ingram Gallery (experts in art protection) have also visited the site and advised me that the new plastic fencing provides virtually no protection. Therefore, I strongly suggest that all work on the patio be stopped until the art can be moved. You also advised me that you will follow up with me this week regarding my questions: 1. Why was the art not moved to another location before the property was leased to the owner ofMuzik? 2. Why is Muzik being allowed to expand its patios and pools, apparently incorporating this public art as 'patio decorations'? 3. How can you allow this construction to continue, given that the artwork is not properly protected? I look forward to hearing from you again, after you and the Exhibition Place Board of Governors have had an opportunity to detennine how these work of art will be returned to public display. Meanwhile, I have attached a backgrounder on the art, in the hopes that you will find it useful. Sincerely, Kathy (Cox) Sutton 416-239-4087 History of the Garden of the Greek Gods by Kathy Sutton 1. The works of art known as "The Garden ofthe Greek Gods" were created in the 1960s by Canadian aiiist Elford Bradley Cox. E.B. Cox, ARCA, OSA, SSC (1914-2003) was one of Canada's foremost sculptors. According to a Toronto guidebook, he had "more sculpture on view in Toronto's public places than any other single artist." 2. These sculptures are among the largest in Canada. Mr Cox used compressed-air chisels, a sledgehaimner and hand tools to carve each piece from a single block of Indiana limestone. The collection eventually grew to 21. Hercules is the tallest, standing over 11 feet high and weighing over 5 tons. Most of the pieces weigh more than 3 tons each. 3. In 1964, the works were installed at Georgian Peaks, a ski hill near Collingwood. Known as "The Enchanted Mountain," the installation was intended as a tourist attraction. Hercules was placed at the bottom of the mountain, while the other works were scattered along an area of trails at the top. Mr Cox created and moved the collection to Georgian Peaks at his own expense. They remained at this location for 10 years. 4. In 1974, Mr. Cox brought his collection back from the resort to his home in North York.

  • Mimico Land Assembly for Waterfront Trail, Ward 3 ______
Mark Grimes Toronto City Hall Toronto City Councillor 100 Queen Street West Ward 3, Etobicoke-Lakeshore Suite C48 Toronto Ontario M5H 2N ______________________________________________________________________________ Date: March 2, 2021 To: Members of Etobicoke York Community Council From: Councillor Mark Grimes Subject: Mimico Land Assembly for Waterfront Trail, Ward 3 ______________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY The Mimico Waterfront Park, situated between Humber Bay Park West and Norris Crescent Parkette, is a 1.1km multi-use waterfront trail created by Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) with funds provided by Waterfront Toronto. It was developed in two phases, the first completed in 2008 and the second in 2012. It provides safe access to the waterfront, improves the ecological functioning of this section of the Lake Ontario shoreline and offers environmental, economic and social benefits to the Mimico community and broader region. Currently the Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario ends at Norris Crescent, travels north to Lake Shore Boulevard West, and then continues as a cycle track west along Lake Shore Boulevard West to First Street. There are several privately-owned parcels of land along Lake Ontario that preclude the trail from continuing westward. Many of these lands are vacant, for sale, or are being assembled for development. This presents an opportunity to acquire the lands abutting Lake Ontario for the purpose of connecting and continuing the Mimico Waterfront Park westward. This motion seeks a report from City staff, working jointly with the federal and provincial levels of government, TRCA, Waterfront Toronto and other waterfront organizations, with a plan to extend Mimico Waterfront Park between Royal York Rd and First Street, through the sale, acquisition, and development of privately owned lands, including identify potential sources of funding.

Daughter of Toronto City Councilor Destroys Lacrosse in Etobicoke 05/26/2016, 4:15pm EDT By Kevin J. Johnston I Was In Tears Writing This One Lacrosse, what a game! It is the Canadian national sport and it is the best choice for kids who need to burn off their extra energy. Box Lacrosse is played in a hockey rink, most being 200 feet long by 85 feet wide, and you have to run. This sport is the perfect blend of speed, skill, tricks, hits and goals, and it is dying Ontario wide. There has been a great deal of difficulty that many lacrosse associations have had to endure and it has resulted in some associations being on the verge of folding outright. Two associations having difficulty are Mississauga and Mimico. The Mimico Lacrosse Association was founded in 1890, and the Mississauga Tomahawks have more than 7 decades of history. There was a conversation that took place between the associations in April of this year, where both conveners discussed that numbers were low enough to make merging age groups necessary. Mississauga had to merge Bantams and Midgets, mixing ages 13 to 17 together and Mimico had to merge Pee Wee, Bantam and Midgets mixing ages 11 to 17 together. Rules in both associations had to be modified so that large 17 year old's could not hit, body check or cross check 11 year old's.Both associations are very fortunate in that their players are extremely respectful of each other and the games flow well. However, boys will be boys and nature cannot be fought.
