Hoyt S. Vandenberg is a 523’ steel hulled missile tracking ship that was intentionally sunk seven miles off Key West, Florida, on May 27, 2009, to serve as a recreational diving and fishing artificial reef. The ship lies in 140’ of water; at its broadest point the deck is 71’ wide, creating habitat from 45’ to the sandy bottom. The Vandenberg is the largest artificial reef in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and the second largest in the world. The City of Key West, the Artificial Reefs of the Keys (ARK), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) worked closely to obtain, clean, scuttle and sink the vessel, as well as raise funds for the effort. Prior to the sinking, the Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) was contracted by the FWC to conduct a study with pre- and post-deployment monitoring of the fish assemblages associated with the Vandenberg and adjacent reef areas for a period of one year. -

(Received 1 September 2016; Revised 25 January 2017; Accepted 10 February 2017) RESUMEN: El presente trabajo aborda los restos de peces encontrados en las once ofrendas que integran el Complejo A, depositadas alrededor del Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlán, el cual fuera el principal edificio ceremonial de la cultura mexica. El estudio de más de 35,000 restos muestra que se usaron 391 individuos de 63 especies y 35 familias. Siete especies fueron particularmen- te importantes por la cantidad de individuos y su frecuencia de uso, aunque el único atributo en común a las 11 ofrendas, es el pez sierra (Pristis). Sólo fueron ofrendados peces marinos, predominando las formas del Atlántico. La mayoría de los peces fueron depositados con una preparación taxidérmica para eliminar la columna vertebral. Las ofrendas colocadas en el relleno constructivo fueron marcadamente menos diversas respecto de las otras ofrendas colocadas en cistas. Aunque se pudieron relacionar algunas especies mencionadas por Sahagún con las ofren- dadas, las fuentes etnohistóricas proporcionan poca información de los peces y su uso, de ahí la importancia de un apropiado rescate y estudio de los restos de peces como fuente primaria y casi exclusiva de las relaciones entre el hombre mesoamericano y este recurso. -

Marine Protected Areas (Mpas) in Management 1 of Coral Reefs
ISRS BRIEFING PAPER 1 MARINE PROTECTED AREAS (MPAS) IN MANAGEMENT 1 OF CORAL REEFS SYNOPSIS Marine protected areas (MPAs) may stop all extractive uses, protect particular species or locally prohibit specific kinds of fishing. These areas may be established for reasons of conservation, tourism or fisheries management. This briefing paper discusses the potential uses of MPAs, factors that have affected their success and the conditions under which they are likely to be effective. ¾ MPAs are often established as a conservation tool, allowing protection of species sensitive to fishing and thus preserving intact ecosystems, their processes and biodiversity and ultimately their resilience to perturbations. ¾ Increases in charismatic species such as large groupers in MPAs combined with the perception that the reefs there are relatively pristine mean that MPAs can play a significant role in tourism. ¾ By reducing fishing mortality, effective MPAs have positive effects locally on abundances, biomass, sizes and reproductive outputs of many exploitable site- attached reef species. ¾ Because high biomass of focal species is sought but this is quickly depleted and is slow to recover, poaching is a problem in most reef MPAs. ¾ Target-species ‘spillover’ into fishing areas is likely occurring close to the MPA boundaries and benefits will often be related to MPA size. Evidence for MPAs acting as a source of larval export remains weak. ¾ The science of MPAs is at an early stage of its development and MPAs will rarely suffice alone to address the main objectives of fisheries management; concomitant control of effort and other measures are needed to reduce fishery impacts, sustain yields or help stocks to recover. -

While the contribution of climate warming to the loss of live coral cover has been well documented, the associated effects on fish have not. Such information is important as coral reef fish assemblages provide critical contributions to ecosystem function and services. This thesis assesses the medium to long term impacts of coral loss on fish assemblages in the western Indian Ocean. Feeding observations of corallivorous butterflyfish demonstrates that considerable feeding plasticity occurs among habitat types, but strong relationships exist between degree of specialisation and declines in abundance following coral loss. Furthermore, obligate corallivores are lost fairly rapidly following decline in coral cover, whereas facultative corallivores are sustained until the structure of the dead coral begins to erode. Surveys of benthic and fish assemblages in Mauritius spanning 11 years highlight small changes in both benthos and fish through time, but strong spatial trends associated with dredging and inter-specific competition. In Seychelles, although there was little change in biomass of fishery target species above size of first capture, size spectra analysis of the entire assemblage revealed a loss of smaller individuals (<30cm) and an increase in the larger individuals (>45cm). -

The series is also available on CD-Rom. CCC fish and coral species lists 1. INTRODUCTION Between 1986 and 1998, Coral Cay Conservation (CCC) provided data and technical assistance to the Belize Department of Fisheries, Coastal Zone Management Unit and Coastal Zone Management Project under the remit of a Memorandum of Understanding. This work has provided data for seven proposed or established marine protected areas at South Water Cay, Bacalar Chico, Sapodilla Cays, Snake Cays, Laughing Bird Cay, Caye Caulker and Turneffe Atoll (Figure 1). These projects have generally provided habitat maps, the associated databases and management recommendations to assist reserve planning. In addition to the data collection, training, capacity building and environmental education undertaken by CCC, the expeditions have also provided opportunities for compiling presence / absence species lists of fish and corals in the different project areas. This document contains the fish list compiled by CCC staff and experienced volunteers and a reprint of Fenner (1999) detailing coral taxonomy in Belize and Cozumel, the Belize component of which was compiled while the author was working as a member of CCC’s field science staff.
