    Assessment of health systems’ crisis preparedness Poland OL Supported by The European CommissionP October 2009 1 Abstract In 2008, with the support of the European Commission Directorate-General for Health and Consumers, WHO launched the project, “Support to health security, preparedness planning and crises management in EU, EU accession and neighbouring (ENP) countries”, with the aim of improving preparedness for public health emergencies in EU Member States and selected EU accession and ENP countries in the WHO European Region. One of the objectives of this project was to refine the assessment tool, which had been revised on the basis of the experience gained through the planning and crises management assessments carried out in Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova under the joint European Commission–WHO project, “Support to health security and preparedness planning in EU neighbouring countries” (2007– 2008). The intention was to apply the updated tool during a second round of assessments before finalizing it in 2010. The countries involved in the second round were Kyrgyzstan, Poland and Ukraine. The WHO health systems’ framework was used as the conceptual basis for describing and analysing the health systems in the countries. This report describes the level of preparedness of the health system in Poland and evaluates the arrangements in place to deal with crises, regardless of cause. It also examines the risk prevention and mitigation initiatives in the country. While the main focus is on the national level, some attention has been paid to crisis management capacity at the regional level and to the links between the various levels of government.

    1 Abstract When an American Jew Produced: Judah David Eisenstein and the First Hebrew Encyclopedia Between 1907 and 1913, Judah David Eisenstein (1854–1956), an amateur scholar and entrepreneurial immigrant to New York City, produced the first modern Hebrew encyclopedia, Ozar Yisrael. The Ozar was in part a traditionalist response to Otsar Hayahdut: Hoveret l’dugma, a sample volume of an encyclopedia created by Asher Ginzberg (Ahad Ha’am)’s circle of cultural nationalists. However, Eisenstein was keen for his encyclopedia to have a veneer of objective and academic respectability. To achieve this, he assembled a global cohort of contributors who transcended religious and ideological boundaries, even as he retained firm editorial control. Through the story of the Ozar Yisrael, this dissertation highlights the role of America as an exporter of Jewish culture, raises questions about the borders between Haskalah and cultural nationalism, and reveals variety among Orthodox thinkers active in Jewish culture in America at the turn of the twentieth century.     Preventing Central Line–Associated Bloodstream Infections A Global Challenge, A Global Perspective Preventing Central Line–Associated Bloodstream Infections: A Global Challenge, A Global Perspective The use of central venous catheters (CVCs) is an integral part of modern health care throughout the world, allowing for the administration of intravenous fluids, blood products, medications, and parenteral nutrition, as well as providing access for hemodialysis and hemodynamic monitoring. However, their use is associated with the risk of bloodstream infection caused by microorganisms that colonize the external surface of the device or the fluid pathway when the device is inserted or manipulated after insertion. These serious infections, termed central line–associated bloodstream infections, or CLABSIs, are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. It is now recognized that CLABSIs are largely preventable when evidence- based guidelines are followed for the insertion and maintenance of CVCs. This monograph includes information about the following: • The types of central venous catheters and risk factors for and pathogenesis of CLABSIs • The evidence-based guidelines, position papers, patient safety initiatives, and published literature on CLABSI and its prevention • CLABSI prevention strategies, techniques and technologies, and barriers to best practices • CLABSI surveillance, benchmarking, and public reporting • The economic aspects of CLABSIs and their prevention, including the current approaches to developing

    ANNUAL REPORT 2019–20 Dear Friends, This annual report was finalized in a world that was unthinkable when the year began. Even though such a report typically looks back, this unprecedented moment calls for looking forward. The Museum is now an all-digital, all-the-time enterprise, for how long we do not know. But that alone is not enough. This is a time for learning and growing. Our digital education resources and virtual trainings and programs must serve our many diverse partners and audiences—teachers, faculty, students, leaders, and the general public. But, we have learned that in digital education, quantity is not quality, and that virtual education is much more complex than we imagined. Demand for our online resources and teaching support has soared, and we are experimenting and reimagining our work for this new world. Our role has always been to help build and lead the fields of Holocaust scholarship and education as well as genocide prevention. Now these fields face challenges and opportunities as never before.
