Kai Tak Development (KTD) Existent Main Street Names There are about seven kilometers of main road, two kilometers of local road, as well as access roads and pedestrian streets in KTD. To cooperate with KTD image ‘Current Vitality, streets naming stands out as a people-oriented neighbourhood by Victoria Harbour and reflecting the energy and liveliness of its surrounding area. Proposed Street Names for Main Roads The Road surrounding Kai Tak City Centre is suggested to name as ‘Shing Kai Road’, which emphasizes the continuation of Kai Tak as a place with rich history and its continuous growth into the future. Shing Kai Road is connected to link up with existing Sung Wong Toi Road, Olympic Avenue and Concorde Road to form a continuous ring road serving the Kai Tak City Centre. The primary function of the ex-runway was for airplanes taking off and landing, with the inspiration of airplanes riding in the wind, and to emphasize that the people of Hong Kong will take flight upon the new KTD to a bright and exciting future. To underline the inheritance of the rich and bountiful legacy from Kai Tak’s past as an airport, the ex-runway will be named as ‘Shing Fung Road’. It will run along the planned Metro Park through the centre of the Runway Precinct and terminate at the Tourism and Leisure Hub that features the Cruise Terminal and Tourism Node. To echo the prosperity of Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong, we propose naming the main road along South Apron as ‘Shing Cheong Road’, where has the meaning of flourishing in Chinese. And the bridge of ex-taxiway is proposed to name as ‘Kai Tak Bridge’ to commemorate Old Kai Tak Airport. 1 Proposed naming for streets in the district One of the key features in the Kai Tak City Centre is the landscaped urban river corridor of Kai Tak River. The river corridor not only co nnects KTS with San Po Kong but also acts as a living testament of sustainable urban development and outcome of public engagement. Building on inspiration of the Kai Tak River and the conceptual design theme of ‘Tree’ and also combines ancient Chinese logogram representing water‘ ’and wood‘ ’, the consultant proposes to adopt the word ‘muk’(「 沐 」 ) to create a unique family of street names. The word has a formal Chinese meaning of ‘bestowed upon, given, received( 蒙 受 、 接 受 )and figuratively means ‘immersed in’ (沉 浸 在 ， 受 潤 澤 ). Echoing KTD as deeply rooted in its social and cultural legacies of the surrounding area, we have studied the street names in the areas of Kowloon City, San Po Kong and Choi Hung to identify the uniqueness and proposed names as follows: 1. Kowloon City – A set of street names related to the Kowloon Walled City, such as South Wall Road (城南道), Ngai Tsin Long Road (衙 前 塱 道 ), Ngai Tsin Wai Road(衙 前 圍 道 ). The use of words reflecting on the role of the Government to nurture the people and virtues of good governance such as ‘Yan’, ‘Lai’, ‘Yan’, ‘Shun’(恩 、 禮 、 仁 、 信 ) is suggested for street naming in KTD in the cicinity of Kowloon City. 2. San Po Kong – A set of street names starting with Chinese numerals, such as Sze Mei Street(四 美 街 ), Ng Fong Street(五芳街) and Luk Hop Street(六合街). The use of words reflecting on the concept of basic unit such as ‘Yuen’(元 ), 、 Pun’(本 ) is suggested for street naming in KTD in the vicinity of San Po Kong. 3. Choi Hung – A set of street names starting with Chinese words representing colours, such as Ching Yeung Avenue (青 楊 路 ), Hung Mui Avenue(紅 梅 路 ), Luk Lau Avenue(綠 柳 路 ). The use of words representing colours such as ‘Chun’(縉 ), ‘Hung’(虹 ), ‘Chui’(翠 ) is suggested for street naming in KTD to enhance the liveliness of area. For the Grid Neighbourhood which is a residential sub -district in the Kai Tak City Centre, the street names should reflect the residential nature and create a sense of place, such as intimacy(安 ), serenity(泰 )and contentment(寧 ). 2 3 .
