Along the coast to beautiful bays and cozy harbors, we will bring you closer to the beauty of Greek islands. Our professional skipper takes over the management and responsibility of the ship. He will take you to the dreamy places of the Greek island world. Events: see table below (individual dates on request) Duration: 8 days (7 nights) Price: from € 990,00 p.p. (service & catering package on board included) Routes: Cyclades, Saronic Gulf, combination of both Your crew Ben Adam (Skipper) Dr. Roland Schmitt (1st Mate) Mirek Schneider (Catering) Susann Adam (Chief Happiness Officer & Photographer) Depending on the type of trip, not all crew members will be on board. Standard crew 2 people Example of the journey (depending on the weather) There are 3 basic options for your route, which are possible depending on the travel period and weather conditions: • Cyclades tour • Saronic Gulf • Combination of both routes In the following list there is a combination of both tours. 1st day - Saturday Lavrion → Kolona on Kithnos Bay We will book you a comfortable direct flight from your home airport to Athens. (De- pending on the flight program, this can also take place one day proir departure.) You will be picked up at Athens Airport and taken to the port of Lavrion. There you move into your berth on the ship “Agamemnon”, a Bavaria 50. After the welcome drink, you will receive an extensive safety briefing from the skip- per on board. We leave in the early afternoon. A few hours of sailing await us on the way to Kithnos Island. There we anchor next to one of the most beautiful sandy bea- ches in the Cyclades, Kolona. Enjoy the Greek cuisine at sunset with an excellent dinner in the tavern located di- rectly on the beach. The perfect way to start your vacation. 2nd day - Sunday Kolona on Kithnos → Livadi on Serifos Port The day begins with a delicious breakfast on board with lots of fresh fruit. Then there is time to swim, read or just relax on the sandy beach with a glass of Crémant. At around 1 p.m. we continue to the small port of Livadi on the island of Serifos. There is the possibility of a wine tasting on the island in the evening for those interested. Then the boss of a local tavern awaits us with delicious Greek starters - so-called mezze. 3rd day - Monday Livadi on Serifos → Poros Port Today we spend the day at sea - assuming good weather, of course. Early in the mor- ning a wonderful long swing begins across the Saronic Gulf. With more vegetation and a slightly milder climate, flora and fauna also change in a very short time. Delicious snacks are served on board during the day and anyone who likes can try their hand at steering a 15m yacht under the guidance of the skipper. Today we will cover a good 60 miles until dinner in the beautiful port of Poros. We are expected. Then we end the eventful day in a cozy wine bar. 4th day - Tuesday Poros → Bay on Dokos Bay In the morning you have time to explore the island of Poros. Different tours are available, depending on your individual taste. The skipper and his crew know their way around and will show you the most beautiful corners of the island; Of course, you can also go shopping in one of the lovely boutiques. At around 2 p.m. we set off southbound to the island of Dokos - there we are usually lonely in a beautiful bay and you enjoy a delicious dinner on board. Day 5 - Wednesday Bucht on Dokos → Hydra Port In order to get a good spot in the picturesque port of Hydra, we will moor there at early noon and have enough time to explore the famous island. Picturesque alleys, beautiful hiking trails or just the lively life of the small port town are worth savoring in peace. Day 6 - Thursday Hydra → Kap Sunion Bay With many memories in our luggage, we spend lunch and afternoon at sea and finally anchor at the foot of the Poseidon Temple for dinner on board or in the local tavern. When the weather is nice, we experience a fantastic sunset - an image for the gods. Day 7 - Friday Kap Sunion → Lavrion Port As in Homer's time, after a leisurely and balanced breakfast we visit the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion Bay. Even then, the seafarers thanked the god of the sea for their voyage. In the afternoon we go to Lavrion in the harbor, because this is where our chartered yacht has its home. Day 8 - Saturday Lavrion In the morning you leave the ship and the time until your return flight is at your own disposal. Depending on the departure time, a stroll in Athens' old town, the so-called “Plaka” or in Lavrion, is possible. Of course, our transport service will take you there - so that you can optimally enjoy the time until your return flight. All statements without guarantee. Subject to changes. All route sections are variable at short notice due to the weather. General information Our general travel conditions apply. We plan our trips very carefully. However, de- pending on the weather, it may happen that individual sections can be differently or not at all. The safety of guests and crew is our top priority at all times, we will be able to offer an alternative option for every situation and also take individual wishes into account. As part of the included meals and respective packages during the trip on board and in the taverns, all normal consumption quantities of food and drinks are also included. Food and drinks beyond this amount will be charged separately. In this context, a note on tips: Tips for the crew or restaurant staff or your tour guides should in any case be an expression of satisfaction and are considered by the recipi- ents as personal recognition for the service provided. Please take this into account for your personal travel budget. You live on the yacht for a week, together with the crew. Of course, great importance is attached to everyone's privacy. It is a modern and technical very well equipped yacht. However, there is always only a limited amount of space, for example in your cabin or the sanitary facilities. A fundamentally good physical condition is very im- portant on a yacht of this type, so this trip is not suitable for people with limited mo- bility. • Ceramic Production and Exchange in the Late Mycenaean Saronic Gulf
Ceramic Production and Exchange in the Late Mycenaean Saronic Gulf William D. Gilstrap A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Archaeology University of Sheffield February 2015 Abstract This thesis examines the production, exchange and consumption of pottery around the Saronic Gulf, Greece, during Late Mycenaean period, specifically Late Helladic IIIB1 to Late Helladic IIIC Phase 1, roughly 1300-1130 BC. While the focus of many studies of Mycenaean political economy has fallen on Messinia and the Argolid, the choice of the Saronic Gulf offers the chance to examine ceramic crafting, movement and use in an area which hosts no accepted ‘palatial’ centres. It aims to examine the role of pottery in everyday social and economic transaction, taking a ‘bottom-up’ approach to shedding light on Mycenaean society and economy. Pottery from a wide range of sites has been studied: urban centres such as Athens; harbours at Kanakia on Salamis and Kalamianos in coastal Corinthia; small settlements of Stiri in Corinthia, Myti Kommeni on Dokos and Lazarides on Aegina; sanctuary sites of Eleusis and Ayios Konstantinos, Methana; and finally the settlement and pottery production site of Kontopigado, Alimos near the Attic coast. Based on typological and macroscopic fabric studies, a large number of samples have been chosen for examination by an integrated programme of petrographic, chemical (by neutron activation analysis) and microstructural analysis (by scanning electron microscopy), in order to group and characterise to pottery according to composition, to reconstruct key aspects of ceramic manufacture and, where possible, to suggest the area or location of their production.

  • Introduction Acknowledgements
10 11 Acknowledgements Introduction General geography of Greece Greece is a relatively small country, and with a surface area of 132,000 km2 it is only half as big as the UK. Encompassed, however, in this modest area, is a great diversity of habitats, exceeding many European countries of much larger size. For example, one can encounter in Epirus alpine areas complete with lush conifer forests, dramatic peaks and extensive snowfields that physiographically resemble Switzerland. On the other hand, some regions of the southern Aegean are closer to Africa than to Athens, and their climate and habitats reflect this proximity. Southeastern Crete for example, con- tains one of the few true European deserts, an area closely resembling certain hamma- da regions of the Middle East. Greece is a country of mountains and islands. The Pindos range, an extension of the Dinaric Alps, forms the backbone of peninsular Greece. A number of smaller mountains originate as spurs from this block, although some, including Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece (2,917 m elevation) arise in relative isola- tion. A second major mountain block, the Rhodopes, located in Thrace, runs in a roughly east-west direction separating Greece and Bulgaria. The Peloponnese, a small- er peninsula in the south, is as mountainous as the mainland and encompasses several peaks exceeding 2,000 m in elevation. With the exception of a few large flat regions located mostly in Thessaly and Thrace, the country lacks extensive plains. Typically the mountains drop rather steeply into the sea and are generally flanked only by narrow coastal plains.

This 7-day sailing itinerary includes islands of Poros, Spetses, Dokos and Hydra, including Cape Sounion and Plaka on the Peloponnese semi-island. Day 1, Saturday: Elliniko – Cape Sounion, 25 NM Arrival to Navigare Yachting base in Elliniko. Check in and provision. Leave for Cape Sounion. The bay at Akra Sounion is not a harbour, but can be a useful stop and to visit the 5th century temple of Poseidon. This is clearly visible on the Cape from a distance and is easily reached after a short walk. Anchorage at 37°39.2' N, 024°01.35' E. Day 2, Sunday: Cape Sounion – Poros, 30 NM Head to Poros (30 NM), this island offers shopping, water sport activities as well as land activities – renting a bicycle/scooter or similar. For the kids there are several bays and beaches to explore for swimming. Mega yachts, fishing boats and sailing yachts all share the marina so if you want a good spot you have to arrive by early afternoon. There are many restaurants to choose from, we can recommend Oasis restaurant with the owner Mike who always welcome Navigare clients and help to moor your yacht if you happen to get a spot right outside the restaurant. Day 3, Monday: Poros – Spetses, 30 NM Spetses, this island is very popular for Athenians and Greeks visiting the area. It is known to be exclusive with high quality restaurants, nice little boutiques and many bars.

Looking at the Past of Greece through the Eyes of Greeks Maria G. Zachariou 1 Table of Contents Introduction 00 Section I: Archaeology in Greece in the 19th Century 00 Section II: Archaeology in Greece in the 20th Century 00 Section III: Archaeology in Greece in the Early 21st Century 00 Conclusion: How the Economic Crisis in Greece is Affecting Archaeology Appendix: Events, Resources, Dates, and People 00 2 Introduction The history of archaeology in Greece as it has been conducted by the Greeks themselves is too major an undertaking to be presented thoroughly within the limits of the current paper.1 Nonetheless, an effort has been made to outline the course of archaeology in Greece from the 19th century to the present day with particular attention to the native Greek contribution. The presentation of the historical facts and personalities that played a leading and vital role in the formation of the archaeological affairs in Greece is realized in three sections: archaeology in Greece during the 19th, the 20th, and the 21st centuries. Crucial historical events, remarkable people, such as politicians and scholars, institutions and societies, are introduced in chronological order, with the hope that the reader will acquire a coherent idea of the evolution of archaeology in Greece from the time of its genesis in the 19th century to the present. References to these few people and events do not suggest by any means that there were not others. The personal decisions and scientific work of native Greek archaeologists past and present has contributed significantly to the same goal: the development of archaeology in Greece.
