Polideportivo Municipal The Royal Site of Aranjuez, located in the southern part of the Community of Madrid, is graced with works of art and monuments that make it one of the most important cultural attractions in Spain. Aranjuez was designated a Royal Site by the Catholic Monarchs who often came to this town to relax. It was the kings from the House of Austria however, who began construction of the palaces and gardens. During the time of Philip II, the Royal Quarters were built but were destroyed by fire in 1665. The first Botanical Garden was inaugurated during this same period. The Bourbon dynasty also showed an interest in the Royal Site. Philip V as a way of showing his appreciation to the people of Aranjuez for their support in the War of Succession, made this town into a royal center and constructed some of the most artistic parks, monuments, gardens and churches. Aranjuez reached its pinnacle as a vacation site for the Court under the reings of Charles III and Charles IV. It was during the second half of the 18th Century therefore, that the Royal Palace was enlarged, the "Jardín del Príncipe" (Prince's Garden) was completed and the "Casita del Labrador" (Farmer's Cottage) was built.

Once you have been selected as a volunteer you will be involved in a training cycle consisting of 3 steps (long term): • Pre-departure training: Organized by the sending organization who is responsible for providing volunteers with training to ensure knowledge of the following: rights and obligations; expectations and fears; insurance; intercultural education; culture shock, etc. • Arrival training: This initial training will be conducted by AFAIJ. The training will consist of a meeting in AFAIJ's office, with training covering the basics of the following topics: Spanish culture, language, conflict resolution, intercultural training. • Final assessment: Volunteers will have a final meeting in AFAIJ to evaluate the whole project and write down the general impressions of their experience in Spain and its activities. For that purpose, a survey of 468 inmates was conducted at 21 prisons in Spain where the Real Madrid Foundation implements its program (441 men (94.23%) and 27 women (5.77%)). Inmates stated that the program had had a favorable influence on their life in prison and considered that their participation in the program might have a significant influence on the likelihood of them continuing to play sports when they are released. In addition, inmates felt that they had learned a great deal about the contents relating to football and the values they had worked on, and that the program had had a very positive effect on their overall development as a person.

  • Madrid Strategic Regional Plan Actions for the Metropolitan Area: Success and Limitations
Teresa Franchini and Francisco Valverde, Madrid Strategic Plan, 40th ISoCaRP Congress 2004 Madrid Strategic Regional Plan Actions for the metropolitan area: success and limitations 1. Planning the Region of Madrid: the new challenges The complex processes that affected cities and territories during the 90’s - globalization, technological advances, new demands of space, social transformations, sustainability - impelled the development of a new planning instrument directed to solve the needs of the urban development for the region of Madrid for the new Century. In June 1996 the Government of the Autonomous Community of Madrid approves the Regional Plan of Territorial Strategy (PRET in Spanish), a document that contains the guidelines of the spatial planning for the next twenty years.
