Glasgow Senior Phase Prospectus 2016/17

Levels 4 - 7

Dear Colleagues, I’m delighted to present the latest edition of our Senior Phase Prospectus for 2016/17 which has been compiled by City Council Education Services in collaboration with all three of Glasgow’s Colleges – , Glasgow Clyde Welcome College and .

The portfolio of provision represents our most ambitious and varied set of courses and qualifications to date. It has been designed in consultation with businesses from across the city to ensure that we give students the opportunity to gain the qualifications, skills and experience they need to flourish as part of Glasgow’s growing economy. Baillie Liz Cameron Courses contained within two publications focus on SCQF Executive Member for Levels 1-3 and SCQF Levels 4-7, offering a diverse range of Children, Young People and industry recognised qualifications to pupils in S4- S6, the senior Life Long Learning phase of their secondary education. It is intended that pupils will participate in these courses alongside national qualifications delivered by schools, enriching the learning experiences and outcomes available.

This year there will be renewed emphasis in collaborating with employers, to enhance features of workplace learning as part of many of the courses available. Individual units, group awards and full certificates of learning are now available as discreet packages for pupils to use as building blocks for their future careers.

Vocational pathways in industry areas including science, technology and engineering; hospitality and food preparation; financial services and business administration; construction; creative; social and health care occupations are continuing to expand thanks to commitment of our school, college and industry partners. Provision is designed to be fully inclusive and will provide support to ensure that young people from all backgrounds and with individual needs are able to access courses which reflect their aspirations and abilities.

The breadth and depth of the courses and support offered through the partnership illustrates our schools’ and colleges’ shared objective to securing a bright, fulfilled future for every one of our young people as they pursue their ambitions and embark upon the transition from school to young adulthood.

I look forward to seeing many of them commence this journey in 2016. Glasgow Senior Phase Prospectus 2016/17 1 2

What is a Foundation Apprenticeship?

A Foundation Apprenticeship can help young people gain valuable, real-world work experience and access work-based learning while they’re still at school. FOUNDATION

Closing the gap between the classroom and the workplace

By giving young people earlier exposure to the world of work, we’re helping them develop the skills, experience and knowledge they’ll need when they leave school. For young people it’s the chance to get a head start on their careers by gaining an industry-recognised qualification, work on real projects and broaden their career options when they leave school.

And for employers, it’s the chance to attract highly motivated and committed young people who are willing to learn, identify young people who are right for their business and ensure their organisation has people with the skills they need.

Learning in the Workplace

Foundation Apprenticeships are a work-based learning opportunity for secondary school pupils in S4 and S5. Young people spend time out of school at college or with a local employer, and complete the Foundation Apprenticeship alongside their other subjects like National 5s and Highers.

The qualification takes two years to complete and is linked to one of six key sectors of the Scottish economy, so young people are getting industry experience which will help them kick-start a successful career in their chosen field.

“A Foundation Apprenticeship can lead straight into a job, further study at college or university, or a fast-track Modern Apprenticeship.” Diane Greenlees, Head of Foundation & Advanced MA & European Funds

“We are delighted to be part of the Senior Phase College Programme. This year we have directed a group of our S4 pupils to some of the many courses on offer. As part of the Glasgow “ Senior Phase Vocational Programme, our young people have found them to be very fulfilling and have clearly benefitted from their College Experiences.
