News Whispering Pines

In the past decade, a number of residential estates and sectional title developments have boosted housing on Joburg’s West Rand. The demand for affordable attractive housing has seen continuous construction in Little Falls near Krugersdorp.

October 2013 News Puzzling land ownership stats

The recent State land audit revealed that over eight million hectares of the country’s land is unaccounted for according to Kevin Mikeham, Democratic Alliance Shadow Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform.

ccording to Mikeham the opposition intends scrutinising the Land Reform Department’s Areport on the results of the state land audit. A full analysis further revealed: 14% or 17 061 882 hect- ares are state-owned; 79% or 96 550 791 hectares are privately-owned; and 7% or 8 360 527 hectares are unaccounted for. “The Minister must urgently table this report in parliament to allow for scrutiny of the veracity of the process used to conduct ’s land audit. Parliament and the public need to know who owns the unaccounted for land and where it is located.” The land audit process was meant to assist the state in its land restitution and reform programmes by outlining how much land is owned privately, by the state or communally. The redistribution of land, as part of the land restitution process, will not be possible if ownership patterns are not known or state figures are unreliable. The DA fully supports the need for Land Reform in order to undo the horrific effects of the 1913 Land Act that dispossessed and displaced thousands of South Africans. Government must do everything to ensure that credible data will assist the land reform process and benefit all parties involved. ■

Payment will be collected automatically. If there were two extra lanes on the freeways you normally travel, saving you time, would you be prepared to pay a toll?” Though the question in itself raises serious con- cerns on how it was formulated - to lead respondents to a positive outcome - baselessly claiming that more lanes will equal less time travelled, the results are nonetheless revealing. Sanral’s April 2009 documentation indicated that 69% of people were willing to pay a toll fee and that 39% of people would not be willing to pay toll fees.
