IUCN World Heritage Outlook: https://worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org/ Lena Pillars Nature Park - 2017 Conservation Outlook Assessment (archived) IUCN Conservation Outlook Assessment 2017 (archived) Finalised on 09 November 2017 Please note: this is an archived Conservation Outlook Assessment for Lena Pillars Nature Park. To access the most up-to-date Conservation Outlook Assessment for this site, please visit https://www.worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org. Lena Pillars Nature Park SITE INFORMATION Country: Russian Federation Inscribed in: 2012 Criteria: (viii) Site description: Lena Pillars Nature Park is marked by spectacular rock pillars that reach a height of approximately 100 m along the banks of the Lena River in the central part of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). They were produced by the region’s extreme continental climate with an annual temperature range of almost 100 degrees Celsius (from –60 °C in winter to +40 °C in summer). The pillars form rocky buttresses isolated from each other by deep and steep gullies developed by frost shattering directed along intervening joints. Penetration of water from the surface has facilitated cryogenic processes (freeze-thaw action), which have widened gullies between pillars leading to their isolation. Fluvial processes are also critical to the pillars. The site also contains a wealth of Cambrian fossil remains of numerous species, some of them unique. © UNESCO IUCN World Heritage Outlook: https://worldheritageoutlook.iucn.org/ Lena Pillars Nature Park - 2017 Conservation Outlook Assessment (archived) SUMMARY 2017 Conservation Outlook Good Because of the relatively robust nature of the values contributing to the OUV of Lena Pillars Nature Park, the remoteness and lack of inhabitants of the site, and the existing protection and management regime, which is effective overall in spite of some low concern, the overall conservation outlook of Lena Pillars Nature Park is assessed as good.

  • Current Tourism Trends on the Black Sea Coast
CURRENT TOURISM TRENDS ON THE BLACK SEA COAST Minenkova Vera, Kuban State University, Russia Tatiana Volkova, Kuban State University, Russia Anatoly Filobok, Kuban State University, Russia Anna Mamonova, Kuban State University, Russia Sharmatava Asida, Kuban State University, Russia [email protected] The article deals with current trends of development of tourism on the Black Sea coast, related to geographical, economic, geopolitical factors. Key words: Black Sea coast, tourism and recreation complex, tourism, current trends. I. INTRODUCTION Black Sea coast has a number of natural features that define the high tourism and recreation potential of the territory. The unique combination of different resources defines the high tourism and recreation potential of the territory and creates conditions for the development of various forms of tourist activity. In view of the existing tourism industry (accommodation facilities, entertainment companies, etc.) and infrastructure we can talk about conditions for the development of almost all types of tourism: − cultural, educational and historical − health and resort − children − ecological − business − ethnographic − religious − agritourism (rural) − gastronomic and wine − active forms of tourism (diving, kitesurfing, hang-gliding, biking, caving, jeeping, rafting, horse riding, skiing and snowboarding, mountain climbing). II. TOURISM DEVELOPMENT FACTORS In general, current trends in the development of tourism on the Black Sea coast are determined by several factors: 1. The presence of significant historical and cultural potential and the unique culture of the local communities. According to archaeological evidence, the Caucasus is really to be considered one of the main points related to the "Cradle places of human civilization" (a series of sites of ancient human settlements in the Caucasus extends back over 300-350 thousand years).

  • The Vjetrenica Cave in Popovo Karst Field – New Understanding of Speleogenesis
Acta geographica Bosniae et Herzegovinae 2015, 4, (51-61) Original scientific paper __________________________________________________________________________________ THE VJETRENICA CAVE IN POPOVO KARST FIELD – NEW UNDERSTANDING OF SPELEOGENESIS Muriz Spahic University of Sarajevo, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Department for Geography, Zmaja od Bosne 33-35, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina On the edge of the Popovo karst field, through which once meandered in its own coat, the river of Trebisnjica, until then the longest underground river in the world, now ameliorated in a concrete riverbed, in Zavala, is the cave Vjetrenica. By the length of the karts channels, from which 6,300 m has been explored, and by the morphometry and morphography of the cave forms, Vjetrenica is the largest and by the speleodiversity the most famous cave in the outer Dinarides zone. Because of the speleothemes during the middle of the last century (1950.) it was placed in a special protection regime – a natural monument. The speleogenesis is focused along the main karst caverns in the direction of the Adriatic Sea, i.e. a southerly direction at the beginning and the end of the cave, and in its central parts it has southeast direction. Karst corrosion processes in karst caverns are very active and have a tendency of speleoevolution in the direction of deepening the lower karst erosion base, as evidenced by the constant hydrological activities, especially after flooding of the central cave system that took place in the period from 12 to 16 October 2015. Since the cave is located on the edge of Popovo karst field, which before the melioration process was periodically flooded by the karst and nival waters, and sometimes during the whole year, and according to the earlier assumptions of speleogenetic scientists in an early stages of development of this holokarst, it was assumed that it was the channel through which the flood waters were leaving Popovo karst field.

  • Forests Warranting Further Consideration As Potential World
Forest Protected Areas Warranting Further Consideration as Potential WH Forest Sites: Summaries from Various and Thematic Regional Analyses (Compendium produced by Marc Patry, for the proceedings of the 2nd World Heritage Forest meeting, held at Nancy, France, March 11-13, 2005) Four separate initiatives have been carried out in the past 10 years in an effort to help guide the process of identifying and nominating new WH Forest sites. The first, carried out by Thorsell and Sigaty (1997), addresses forests worldwide, and was developed based on the authors’ shared knowledge of protected forests worldwide. The second focuses exclusively on tropical forests and was assembled by the participants at the 1998 WH Forest meeting in Berastagi, Indonesia (CIFOR, 1999). A third initiative consists of potential boreal forest sites developed by the participants to an expert meeting on boreal forests, held in St. Petersberg in 2003. Finally, a fourth, carried out jointly between UNEP and IUCN applied a more systematic approach (IUCN, 2004). Though aiming at narrowing the field of potential candidate sites, these initiatives do not automatically imply that all of the listed forest areas would meet the criteria for inscription on the WH List, and conversely, nor do they imply that any site left off the list would not meet these criteria.
