The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with Carnegie Mellon University in the search for an Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations. Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) seeks an experienced leader for its alumni relations team, responsible for creating opportunities for alumni to develop lifelong engagement and connection to one of the world’s great universities. The Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations will set strategy and provide leadership and advocacy for the alumni relations program and the CMU Alumni Association, while serving as a thought leader for the alumni relations efforts in the colleges and schools of CMU. The Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations will develop a comprehensive and compelling alumni relations program for Carnegie Mellon University’s worldwide network of 100,000 graduates, building their lifelong engagement with the university and connecting to their interests professionally, intellectually, and personally. The Associate Vice President will be responsible for fostering innovative and dynamic alumni programs—including developing a robust annual reunion program—as well as expanding activities to build a culture of philanthropy among CMU graduates. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations will report to the Vice President for University Advancement and is a member of the divisional management team.

PRINCIPAL OPPORTUNITIES The Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations will provide visionary and entrepreneurial leadership for CMU’s alumni relations program and for the CMU Alumni Association. The Associate Vice President will direct a comprehensive alumni relations program for CMU’s 100,000+ alumni to support lifelong engagement with the university and its mission. The Associate Vice President will serve a key role in building a robust annual reunion program as well as expanding activities to build a culture of philanthropy among CMU graduates. The Associate Vice President is also the senior university official on the CMU Alumni Association Board, working closely with board members in accomplishing Board goals and activities, and designing training and engagement opportunities for board members and other senior volunteers. The Associate Vice President will direct daily operations of the alumni relations office and lead a team of approximately 17 staff members. CMU’s Advancement Division is focused on engaging alumni and donors in the life of the university, and generating financial resources that will support CMU in advancing its important educational and research mission. The university is currently planning a multi-year fundraising campaign; the campaign will have both significant dollar goals and goals for alumni and donor engagement in the ongoing life of CMU.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES The Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations will • serve as the university’s primary representative to its community of alumni and friends, and develop and implement a comprehensive alumni relations program that engages all CMU alumni and builds a culture of philanthropy among them; • act as the university official on the CMU Alumni Association Board, partnering with board members in accomplishing board goals and designing engagement and training opportunities for board members and other senior volunteers; • serve as a member of University Advancement’s divisional management team and as a liaison and thought leader to alumni relations officers in the schools and colleges; • collaborate with the Vice President for University Advancement and members of the division’s management team toward accomplishing overall University Advancement Division goals, especially championing alumni engagement and participation; • develop and maintain connections and collaborations between the university alumni relations program and those sponsored by the schools and colleges; • work with other partners across the university, such as career services, admissions, student affairs, and athletics, to develop opportunities for alumni to support and be engaged with CMU; • demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion both in recruiting and developing the Alumni Relations staff and in implementing programs and services; • provide leadership to all business functions in the Office of Alumni Relations, including long-and short-term planning, program development, metrics and assessment, and supervision of the alumni relations staff; • assume direct responsibility for all related budgets, financial planning, and unit expenditures; and

• help maximize effectiveness across the entire Division of University Advancement through other duties as assigned.

UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT LEADERSHIP Scott Mory Vice President for University Advancement Scott Mory is Carnegie Mellon University’s Vice President for University Advancement. He is responsible for overseeing the university’s overall advancement efforts and for building partnerships with all of CMU’s philanthropic and volunteer communities, including university alumni, parents and friends; charitable foundations; and corporate donors. Appointed in 2015, Scott works closely with administrative and academic leadership to develop advancement plans and resources to fulfill the university’s potential and to support its continued ascent. He also leads the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees. Prior to joining CMU, Scott served as Associate Senior Vice President and Campaign Director at the University of Southern California, managing the day-to-day activities of the Campaign for USC, a historic effort to raise $6 billion. He joined USC in 2007 as Associate Senior Vice President for Alumni Relations. Prior to USC, Scott served as Assistant Vice President for Alumni Relations and Annual Giving at George Washington University. Scott holds a bachelor’s degree from the George Washington University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the George Washington University Law School.

Cindy Crimmins Associate Vice President, Advancement Programs and Services, and Interim Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations Cindy Crimmins is the Associate Vice President of Advancement Programs and Services for University Advancement. Additionally, Cindy is serving as Interim Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations. She is a strategic partner in the university’s advancement efforts and is responsible for strengthening engagement with constituents through marketing and communication efforts as well as events, donor relations and stewardship activities, and annual giving. In addition, Cindy oversees several support programs, including Research and Management, as well as Advancement Information Services and Gift Administration. Since arriving at Carnegie Mellon in 2016, Cindy has worked closely with advancement leadership to develop and enhance programs to support the strategic initiatives of advancement. Working closely with Alumni Relations and the campaign office, she and her team work to amplify and communicate the strengths and priorities of the institution through a multi-channel program. Prior to joining CMU, Cindy was Associate Vice President for Advancement Operations at Kent State University, one of the largest public institutions in Ohio. Prior to Kent State, Cindy served in various positions at Clarkson University, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland. Cindy earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where she first became interested in higher education philanthropy.

Mark E. Delos Reyes Davis Associate Vice President for University Advancement and Campaign Director Mark Davis is Associate Vice President for University Advancement and Campaign Director at Carnegie Mellon University. Mark works with the division's Vice President and other leaders in developing and implementing the strategy for the campaign including monitoring the progress on CMU's best prospects and ensuring that university leadership is appropriately engaged in development and alumni relations activities. Most recently served as Chief of Staff to the President; Senior International Officer; and Acting Vice President of Enrollment Management at Hawaiʻi Pacific University. Previously, he was Assistant to the President at Rice University serving as Director of the President’s Office and coordinating its international initiatives after a successful stint as Executive Director of the Association of Rice Alumni. Mark holds a master’s degree in Law from Tsinghua University and a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona. His research is in international development assistance and higher education.

Pam Eager Senior Associate Vice President for Development Pam Eager is the Senior Associate Vice President for Development at Carnegie Mellon. Her responsibilities include leading the planned giving, international development, and parent giving programs. She is also a key member of the campaign planning and principal gifts teams. Since joining the university in 1991, Pam has served in a number of roles including Director of Development for the College of Engineering, Director of Major Gifts, and Assistant Vice President for Individual Giving. Prior to joining the staff at Carnegie Mellon, Pam worked at BASF Corporation, an international chemicals producer, in market development, product management, and corporate strategic planning. Pam holds a B.S in chemical engineering and an MBA, both from Carnegie Mellon.

Mark Nolan Associate Vice President, Institutional Partnerships Mark Nolan leads private sector engagement efforts for Carnegie Mellon University – managing the central Corporate/Business Engagement and Foundation Relations teams. In this role, Mark and his team serve as primary points of contact for corporations with interests in engaging/hiring students; research collaborations with faculty/research scientists; utilization of university resources to meet corporate needs; increasing corporate awareness of university Intellectual property, university affiliated startups, and professional/continuing education programs; and addressing interests in corporate locations on/near the university campus. With 20 years of university-technology based economic development experience, Mark also works with state and local economic development agencies and government officials to grow communities with great jobs. Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon in February 2016, Mark was the Director of IT and economic development at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2006-2015), head of economic development and private sector engagement at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (2001-2006), and held various program management positions within large corporations, government contractors, and university and VC-funded startups. Mark is a two-time National Science Foundation I-Corps Program participant. He holds a B.A. in Speech Communications from West Virginia Wesleyan College and an M.S. LIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Matt Weinstein Associate Vice President, College Development and University Initiatives Matt Weinstein is the Associate Vice President for College Development and University Initiatives at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the primary liaison to all of the college- and school-based advancement programs providing them leadership and coordination with the central office of University Advancement. In addition, Matt leads the university initiatives team responsible for developing and executing fundraising strategies for donors interested in supporting the key strategic academic and university-wide initiatives including athletics, student affairs, and the library. Matt has 20 years of development experience, primarily in higher education. Before joining CMU, he spent 13 years at the University of Pittsburgh holding numerous positions within institutional advancement. Most recently, he was the Senior Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations for the Swanson School of Engineering, helping Pitt successfully complete its $2-billion- campaign. Matt earned his Ph.D. in Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh and has degrees from Lehigh University and Clark University, and a certificate from the London School of Economics.

CMU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Alex DiClaudio (DC 2009, HNZ 2011) CMU Alumni Association Board President (2018-2020) Alex DiClaudio is President of the CMU Alumni Association Board, providing leadership and support for all aspects of CMU’s alumni relations program. He also serves as an ex-officio member of the University’s Board of Trustees. A double degree holder from Carnegie Mellon, he is a film, television, and theater producer, freelance project management and pitch consultant, and President and CEO of tech startup HiUp USA, a global app that connects job seekers in the skilled labor market with jobs and training. Alex has a passion for telling new stories well. In addition to leading the U.S. rollout of the global app HiUp, he partners with a number of talented storytellers in multiple media to create, develop and produce content. As a student he was President of CMU’s renowned Scotch'n'Soda Theatre. Alex earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and a Master of Arts Management from the of Information Systems and Public Policy, as well as studying at the London School of Economics.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND QUALITIES Carnegie Mellon University seeks an Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations with • the demonstrated ability to relate well to, and understand the needs and interests of the alumni community to strengthen their engagement with the university; • a strong track record in designing, implementing, and executing successful alumni or constituent relations strategies that have resulted in significant increases in engagement and participation; • a proven commitment to diversity and inclusion in developing staff and in the implementation of university programs and services; • success in managing collaborative relationships and utilizing data and technology to build strategic plans and new initiatives; • an interest in all aspects of education and a dedication to promoting the university’s priorities through developing excellent working relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders,

trustees, the alumni association, and other volunteers and the university and college advancement teams; • personal belief in the mission, goals, and objectives of private higher education; • the ability to initiate, follow-through, analyze, monitor, and evaluate programming; • excellent written communication and oral presentation skills; and • experience supervising professional and support staff and leading a team toward a common goal, emphasizing collaboration, respect and high performance. A bachelor's degree is required for this position as is at least twelve years of experience, preferably within alumni relations/development and experience in volunteer training and management, program analysis and development, the development of success metrics and three years of experience in senior leadership roles. A master's degree is preferred. The Associate Vice President will travel to remote locations, including travel internationally, and must maintain a valid passport.
