BVRC Committee At the AGM, Lindsay & Susie were re-elected for a further two year term. Claire Arnold was appointed as Treasurer to take over from David Matthews, with Alison Coleman volunteering to be her able assistant. Juanita Coulson formally joins the committee, following her co-option during the year. We still have three vacancies & will be looking to co-opt members, to the committee, to help us out. The committee & club officials are shown below. If not, there is still time to claim a discount of £7 for riding members, if the subs are paid before 31st December 2018. BVRC club year started on 1st November, so it is time to renew your annual subscriptions for an exciting 2019. Rates have stayed the same as last year and are £33, for Riding Members, and at £12 for Non Riding Members. We hope that the concession will entice you to renew your subscriptions promptly. The reduced rate of £26 will apply for second and subsequent members of the same household. No discount is applicable for non-riding members, as their rate has not increased for many years. You will need to renew your subscription if you wish to take advantage of the reduced cap when hunting with the RA Hunt. Membership renewal can be done online through My Riding Life, for which there is a single transaction cost of £1.50 when you make a “purchase”, to cover the cost of the system provided. Otherwise, please fill in the membership renewal form (.pdf version), which can also be found on the BVRC website, and send it with a cheque made payable to Bourne Valley Riding Club, to Celia Scott (address on form). By providing your details to BVRC you agree to them being used by the Committee to contact you about Club activities, events and requests for help. Information is usually sent out by email from the [email protected] and it is recommended that you save this address, plus [email protected], to your Contacts to avoid them going into Spam. Forthcoming Events BVRC Christmas Ride, Larkhill Racecourse, Sunday 30th December 2018 Each year we usually hold a pre-Christmas ride for members and guests (by invitation only) across Salisbury Plain starting and finishing at Larkhill Racecourse. With the Plain only standing down from military activities on 21st December, we have again slipped the date untill after Christmas. A brisk ride on Salisbury Plain with friends is a good way to see out 2018 and still have a day to prepare for a New Year's Eve Party. There are usually two groups, one cantering about a bit more than the other mostly walk/trot ride. When we return to the lorry park there will be tea/coffee and mince pies to consume before you head off home. Names must be logged with the organiser in advance and as these rides are usually popular you need to register your interest early, to Lindsay Hills (phone 01264 772388 or email [email protected]). Be sure to say which ride you would like to go on. The ride is free to members and a small charge of £5 is made for friends/family (16 years and over), payable on the day. Please arrive in time to be ready for a 10.30am departure and we aim to be back at the parking area about 12.30pm for refreshments. Contact number on the day only is: 07377 087121 (phone calls only, no texts). BVRC Annual Quiz Night – Friday 18th January 2019 at The Lion, Clanville, Nr Weyhill, 7.30-8pm. We return to The Lion, Clanville again with Sandra Groves as Quiz Master. This is for members and guests and includes several rounds of questions, each on a different topic e.g. General Knowledge, Sport, Entertainment, etc. with equestrian questions in a round or mixed in. A couple of ‘beer rounds’ are included to allow us to keep topped up with food & drink. Four or five people can make up a team, or if you come on your own then just turn up and we can find a team for you to join. A list of devious questions will be devised, guaranteed to get the old grey cells working and provide plenty of amusement. Come early, order a drink and some food, ready for the quiz to start at 8pm. If you wish to eat you MUST pre-book with the Lion in advance, by Monday 14th January. Details of menus can be found on http://www.thelionatclanville.co.uk Quiz cost is £5 members, £6 non members. We look forward to seeing you on 18th January. BVRC Residential Camp at Stockland Lovell, Somerset TUESDAY 7th May – FRIDAY 10th May 2019 With Easter falling late in April next year, and the usual arrival day coinciding with Easter Monday, camp has deferred and been booked for early May. Arrival will be on Tuesday 7h May between 12-1pm and departure after lunch on Friday 10th May. Accommodation consists of furnished heated log cabins/barns of various sizes, containing 3-6 bunk beds, divans, mirror, chairs and hooks for clothing. Residents will need to take their own bedding including pillows. Shower block, loos, dining room and lounge are available on the premises. Full catering will be provided and includes English breakfast, cold lunch, afternoon cakes and 2 course evening meal. Stabling will be in an American style barn with hay and straw included. Hard food will not be supplied, so we will need to take our own. The facilities at Stockland Lovell include an extensive cross country course with in excess of 100 fences from 1’6” to 3’9”, two all weather arenas (one for flatwork and one with show jumps), marked routes for hacking around the farm saddlery shop. The plan is to have six riding sessions, Tuesday afternoon, 2 each on Wednesday and Thursday and one on Friday morning. All horse must have a current flu vaccination certificate, which will be checked on arrival. Put the dates in your diary and look out for the booking form which will be sent out in the New Year. Hunting The club has subscribed to the RA Hunt again this year. This will enable club members to drag hunt up to 4 times during the season (from November to April) for a reduced cap of £20. Secretary: Ali Wilson 01264 773191 or [email protected]. Ring Ali for details of meets, times, parking, dress etc. Don't forget to take your membership card to claim the reduced cap. Contact Ali if you would like to receive regular details of events run by the RA Hunt & RA Hunt Supporters Club. BVRC Be Fair (Competiton) & Caballine (Helpers) Awards 2018 Presentation of trophies and rosettes was made to award winners at the AGM. Be Fair The Be Fair trophy and a year’s membership was awarded to the member attaining the most points in competition throughout the year. Rosettes were presented to the top ten riders. Congratulations to Susie Pool, who is the winner of the Be Fair Trophy in 2018. Susie, not only undertakes the role of BVRC Secretary, keeping us all informed & in order, manages BVRC teams, and somehow still manages to find time to compete herself. It has been a joy to see the development of Susie with her horse, Dubai. The pinnacle of which was at the BRC Area 17 Dressage qualifier, were they gave an exemplary display and qualified for the BRC National Championships. 70 members gained competition points this year (full results below). Congratulations to everyone who made an appearance on the points board The number of members gaining points is indicative of quantity and diversity of competitions we are able to run throughout the year. Caballine The Caballine Trophy and Caballine Rose Bowl together with free membership are awarded to the members donating the most hours helping at club competitions throughout the year. Rosettes were presented to the top four committee members and the top ten non-committee members. Each point equates to one hour helping at competitions. Over 1000 hours work were amassed this year and that excludes all the ‘behind the scenes’ jobs and help given by non-members, family and friends. 80 members appeared on the awards list after helping at club events. As last year’s recipient, Susie Pool’s 70 points were excluded from the competition. Thank you to you all. The club could not survive without your help or that of your nearest and dearest.

WILDLIFE DIARY AND NEWS FOR DEC 28 - JAN 3 (WEEK 53 OF 2015) Fri 1st January 2016 54 Birds and 45 Flowers to start the year In my garden just before sunrise the moon was close to Jupiter high in the southern sky and Robins and a Song Thrush were serenading it from local gardens as a Carrion Crow flew down to collect the sraps of bread I threw out on the lawn before setting out on my bike in search of birds. Also on my lawn I was surprised to see that a Meadow Waxcap fungus had sprung up a couple of weeks after I thought my garden fungus season was over - later I added another fungus to my day list with a smart fresh Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius vitellinus) growing from a cowpat on the South Moors Internet photos of Yellow Fieldcap and Meadow Waxcap My proposed route was along the shore from Langstone to Farlington Marshes lake and as the wind was forecast to become increasingly strong from the south- east, and the tide to be rising from low at 9.0am I thought it best to follow the shore with the wind behind me on the way out and to stick to the cycle track and roads on the way home so I rode down Wade Court Road listening out for garden birds among which I heard bursts of song from more than one Dunnock (not a bird I associate with winter song) and saw two smart cock Pheasants in the horse feeding area immediately south of Wade Court.

  • Volume Two Appendix 1: Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Villa Sites in Britain 4Ppendix 1 Introduction to the Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible
Volume Two Appendix 1: Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Villa Sites in Britain 4ppendix 1_ Introduction to the Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Roman Villas in Britain The existence of some villas can be held to be self-evident: they have been at least partially excavated and shown to be rectilinear masonry buildings, perhaps with baths, mosaics arid hypocausts. However, before a site is actually excavated - or given a thorough geophysical or successful aerial survey - it is difficult to discern its exact nature. Any surface scatter of Roman artefacts, particularly building debris, may indicate the presence of a villa. This presents the thorniest of problems to the compiler of a catalogue of possible villa sites, for a field scatter of Roman material may also represent the site of a temple, a mansio, a small town, a 'native settlement' or even a heavily manured field. Yet field scatters must be taken into account, because they may prove to be villas. They are certainly likely to prove to be a settlement of some sort. Even a light field scatter belies a much greater amount of material beneath the surface. Ebcperiments by Ainmerman (1985) and Parker- Pearson (pers. comm.) on the relationship of surface to sub-surface artefact densities have demonstrated that a relatively small amount of material - as little as 2% of the total - is present on the surface at any one time. These results have been confirmed with Roman material in Britain by Gaffney and Tingle (1985) at Maddle Farm (BK27) and by Hayfield at 1harram (NK37)(pers. Comm.).

  • Look Around a Look at Historical & Archaeological Issues in Andover and the Surrounding Villages
Look Around A look at historical & archaeological issues in Andover and the surrounding villages. 2014 Number 3, September “Look Around” is the newsletter of the ANDOVER HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY www.andover-history.org.uk Note from the Chair This year we have all enjoyed the long, fine summer but there has been sadness too as we have remembered the start of the First World War one hundred years ago. Everywhere communities were touched by the horrors of that war as their men were killed or returned badly injured from the fighting, and our members have been involved in commemorative events both in Andover and in its surrounding villages. One event in Andover was a public Service of Commemoration on the lawns in front of Andover War Memorial Hospitable and the Society was pleased to contribute to that event an exhibition about the history of the hospital and its ongoing service to the community. Adding to our enjoyment of the summer was our very interesting ‘behind the scenes’ visit to the Hampshire Record Office and our walk around Hurstbourne Tarrant. Mike Nash, our guide for that walk, is Chairman of Hurstbourne Tarrant Historical Society and the links we have with other societies in our area are very important for us. For many years Phoebe Merrick, founder and current chair of the Lower Test Valley Archaeological Study Group in Romsey, has arranged an annual gathering of all the societies in the Test valley with an interest the past. It provides us all with an opportunity to meet each other and to share the work we are doing.
