  • Hollins 2015
WILDLIFE DIARY AND NEWS FOR DEC 28 - JAN 3 (WEEK 53 OF 2015) Fri 1st January 2016 54 Birds and 45 Flowers to start the year In my garden just before sunrise the moon was close to Jupiter high in the southern sky and Robins and a Song Thrush were serenading it from local gardens as a Carrion Crow flew down to collect the sraps of bread I threw out on the lawn before setting out on my bike in search of birds. Also on my lawn I was surprised to see that a Meadow Waxcap fungus had sprung up a couple of weeks after I thought my garden fungus season was over - later I added another fungus to my day list with a smart fresh Yellow Fieldcap (Bolbitius vitellinus) growing from a cowpat on the South Moors Internet photos of Yellow Fieldcap and Meadow Waxcap My proposed route was along the shore from Langstone to Farlington Marshes lake and as the wind was forecast to become increasingly strong from the south- east, and the tide to be rising from low at 9.0am I thought it best to follow the shore with the wind behind me on the way out and to stick to the cycle track and roads on the way home so I rode down Wade Court Road listening out for garden birds among which I heard bursts of song from more than one Dunnock (not a bird I associate with winter song) and saw two smart cock Pheasants in the horse feeding area immediately south of Wade Court.

  • Volume Two Appendix 1: Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Villa Sites in Britain 4Ppendix 1 Introduction to the Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible
Volume Two Appendix 1: Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Villa Sites in Britain 4ppendix 1_ Introduction to the Catalogue of Known, Suspected and Possible Roman Villas in Britain The existence of some villas can be held to be self-evident: they have been at least partially excavated and shown to be rectilinear masonry buildings, perhaps with baths, mosaics arid hypocausts. However, before a site is actually excavated - or given a thorough geophysical or successful aerial survey - it is difficult to discern its exact nature. Any surface scatter of Roman artefacts, particularly building debris, may indicate the presence of a villa. This presents the thorniest of problems to the compiler of a catalogue of possible villa sites, for a field scatter of Roman material may also represent the site of a temple, a mansio, a small town, a 'native settlement' or even a heavily manured field. Yet field scatters must be taken into account, because they may prove to be villas. They are certainly likely to prove to be a settlement of some sort. Even a light field scatter belies a much greater amount of material beneath the surface. Ebcperiments by Ainmerman (1985) and Parker- Pearson (pers. comm.) on the relationship of surface to sub-surface artefact densities have demonstrated that a relatively small amount of material - as little as 2% of the total - is present on the surface at any one time. These results have been confirmed with Roman material in Britain by Gaffney and Tingle (1985) at Maddle Farm (BK27) and by Hayfield at 1harram (NK37)(pers. Comm.).

  • Look Around a Look at Historical & Archaeological Issues in Andover and the Surrounding Villages
Look Around A look at historical & archaeological issues in Andover and the surrounding villages. 2014 Number 3, September “Look Around” is the newsletter of the ANDOVER HISTORY & ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY www.andover-history.org.uk Note from the Chair This year we have all enjoyed the long, fine summer but there has been sadness too as we have remembered the start of the First World War one hundred years ago. Everywhere communities were touched by the horrors of that war as their men were killed or returned badly injured from the fighting, and our members have been involved in commemorative events both in Andover and in its surrounding villages. One event in Andover was a public Service of Commemoration on the lawns in front of Andover War Memorial Hospitable and the Society was pleased to contribute to that event an exhibition about the history of the hospital and its ongoing service to the community. Adding to our enjoyment of the summer was our very interesting ‘behind the scenes’ visit to the Hampshire Record Office and our walk around Hurstbourne Tarrant. Mike Nash, our guide for that walk, is Chairman of Hurstbourne Tarrant Historical Society and the links we have with other societies in our area are very important for us. For many years Phoebe Merrick, founder and current chair of the Lower Test Valley Archaeological Study Group in Romsey, has arranged an annual gathering of all the societies in the Test valley with an interest the past. It provides us all with an opportunity to meet each other and to share the work we are doing.
