As he tries to do so, however, Ann—a blossoming member of the Religious Right —invites him to come along to protest the premiere of a racy film: “I want to get the whole gang from church together: we’re going to picket those bastards” (“Righteous Brothers”). Upon hearing Ann swear, George Michael enters a brief flashback, which the viewer is guided through by the show’s narrator, Ron Howard: “George Michael had only heard Ann swear once before: when he joined some of her youth group to protest the home of Marc Cherry, executive producer of the hit show Desperate Housewives.” The youth group is shown standing outside Cherry’s house, holding signs with such slogans as “God doesn’t care about ratings” and chanting, “There’s nothing funny about fornication!” As the scene unfolds, Cherry appears in the window and stares perplexedly at the protesters. After a moment’s pause, he opens the window and shouts, “It’s a satire!” An exasperated Cherry then dis- appears back inside, an emotionally charged Ann plants a kiss on George Michael, and the flashback ends. Although Arrested Development is not the central text at hand here, this scene gets at the layers of narrative and irony present in post- millennial sitcoms—layers central to this article’s investigation.

I am pleased to report that the Classics Department is thriving. This year we have eight majors and three minors graduating, and our newest faculty member, Prof. Katheryn Whitcomb, has added several courses in ancient history to our curriculum. Our faculty now offer cross-listed courses with three other programs: Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (Prof. Lesser), Anthropology (Prof. Luley), and History (Prof. Whitcomb). Our efforts are focused on engaging students not only in the study of antiquity but in discussion and debate about questions of contemporary significance, and we are pleased to find our classes drawing a broad spectrum of students from across the campus. In addition to a lively set of courses, the department has also had some special events this year. Our chapter of Eta Signa Phi sponsored the first of what we hope will be a regular activity, an open discussion on a topic in the sphere of Classics and of current interest: Who Owns Classics? We explored several topics—the disposition of the Elgin Marbles, the political use of classical themes and art, the Classics curriculum at Gettysburg in the mid-nineteenth century.

All of our preparations for transitions were overlaid by the Coronavirus pandemic while we watched its full impact around the globe, country, state, and UNM HSC. With UNMH being the premier intensive care facility in the state, our hospital did an amazing job of leading the efforts of caring for the sickest New Mexicans with COVID-19. The hospital shifted to massive preparations for an anticipated surge of COVID-19 cases which essentially shut down access to the hospital to all but COVID-19 patients and other 1.
