As such, it is also a study of English racisms: how they were fought against and how they were denied and facilitated. Additionally, the thesis pays attention to the interface of ‘religion’ and politics and the radical restatement of Christianity in the sixties. Despite a preponderance of sociological literature on 'race relations' and 'religion' in England, there has been a dearth of historical studies of either area in the post-war period. Therefore, this thesis is an important revision to the existing historiography in that it adds flesh to the bones of the story of post-war Christian involvement in the politics of 'race', and gives further texture and detail to the history of racism, 'race relations', and anti-racist struggles in England.

Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. 24th July 2018 2 Abstract: In the early 1970s, activists and community groups began to use newly available video recording technology to produce what came to be known as ‘community video’. The capacity to record and instantly playback video material enabled groups previously ignored or misrepresented by mainstream media to develop their own means of self-representation. Since its inception, community video has largely been considered as ephemeral and remained at the margins of moving image histories. This practice-based thesis challenges the marginalisation of 1970s community video through a combination of two approaches. First, the reappraisal of community video projects from the 1970s will describe the context out of which ‘community video’ first developed and align it with other similar approaches to non-fiction moving production. I then use an analysis of primary sources to draw out a methodological approach specific to 1970s community video. Second, I consider the contemporary relevance of 1970s community video practices through the ‘reactivation’ of both the production methods used to make community videos in the 1970s and the videos produced as a result of them. Referring to a practice of both restoration and of setting-in-motion, the term ‘reactivation’ provides a useful metaphor for the reflexive process that I use to draw comparisons between community videos produced in the 1970s and those videos produced during a contemporary community video project.

Through a mixture of ideas drawn from artistic avant-garde movements as well as new social and religious movements, it examines the radical political and hedonist imaginaries of the experimental fringes of the UK Underground. Even though the theatres of operation have changed more than once since 1991 with the rise of the internet and a globalised finance economy, these imaginaries still raise questions that speak directly to the contemporary. My central inquiry examines the relations between collective practices with an explicit agenda of cultural revolution and discourses of direct revolutionary action, cultural guerrilla warfare and patchwork spirituality, all aiming to generate new forms of social life.

But Carnival also has an explosive auditory impact due to its cacophony of sounds, in which soca, steel bands, calypso and static sound-systems mix and mingle in a multi-media and multi-sensory event. Traditionally the ‘five arts’ of Carnival are soca, steel bands, calypso and sound- systems, together with the mas bands.1 This chapter explores Carnival’s irreducible heterogeneities and poly-vocalities as a unique phenomenon, contribution and expression of British cultural life and the country’s musical landscape. The Carnival Scene Probably Europe’s largest street festival, Notting Hill Carnival is attended each year by an average of one million people – including London residents as well as visitors from outside the city and the country.2 Carnival is a powerful expression of the multiple layering of British popular music that regularly takes place at street level in London and many other UK cities. It is only possible, however, because of Britain’s geographical, historical and post-colonial metropolitan location.

Traditionally the ‘five arts’ of Carnival are soca, steel bands, calypso and sound- systems, together with the mas bands.1 This chapter explores Carnival’s irreducible heterogeneities and poly-vocalities as a unique phenomenon, contribution and expression of British cultural life and the country’s musical landscape. The Carnival Scene Probably Europe’s largest street festival, Notting Hill Carnival is attended each year by an average of one million people – including London residents as well as visitors from outside the city and the country.2 Carnival is a powerful expression of the multiple layering of British popular music that regularly takes place at street level in London and many other UK cities. It is only possible, however, because of Britain’s geographical, historical and post-colonial metropolitan location.
