EDDIE ADAMS BRITAIN AT WORK Interviewed by Tom Vague 240 Lancaster Road North Kensington 28/5/09 Eddie Adams was a sheet metal worker on Latimer Road in the early 50s, then he worked at the Heinz factory in Harlesden, and as an electrician for the Ministry of Works and at Ford in Dagenham. As a member of the electricians’ union (ETU), he became a shop steward and the west London convenor of shop stewards at the Ministry of Works. He later worked at the Law Centre on Golborne Road and set up the Gloucester Court Reminiscence Group. Since the 50s he has also been a leading community activist in Notting Hill. Eddie has published several local history books and is still active on various community campaigns in North Kensington. Vulcan sheet metal works Latimer Road I started work at 15. My first job was at Vulcan sheet metal works which were underneath the arches in Latimer Road (now Freston Road). This was a small industrial unit which made colt cowls, which some people may remember, you can still see a few of them on chimneys. They were to draw off the smoke from the chimneys. The firm also made ventilators, and there were roughly 20 people working there. I was 15 in 1951, that’s when I started work there and I probably stayed there for two years. It was a place where lots of young people started their working life in North Kensington. One of those fairly dead end jobs but it was an introduction to work and some skills. -

The programme was delivered through two strands – ROOTS (a historical review and critical analysis of Carnival in London from 1969) and ROUTES (mapping the journey to artistic and performance excellence for Carnival and its related industries) - to achieve the following objectives: Inform Carnival Village‟s development plans Formulate an approach to and build a consensus on Carnival Arts Identify and develop a strategic forum of stakeholders, performers and artists Recognise and celebrate artistic excellence in Carnival Arts Build on the legacies of Claudia Jones and other Carnival Pioneers The Programme For the duration of the event, there were two keynote presentations; the first was the inaugural Claudia Jones Carnival Memorial Lecture delivered by Dr Pat Bishop and the second was delivered by Pax Nindi on the future of Carnival. -

VS. Naipauñ "The Return of Eva Perón " and the Loss of "True Wonder TRACY WARE ... the experience of wonder continually reminds us that our grasp of the world is incomplete. STEPHEN GREENBLATT, Marvelous Possessions IN "CONRAD'S DARKNESS," the concluding essay in The Return of Eva Perón, V. S. Naipaul laments the decay of Joseph Conrad's aesthetic ideals: The novelist, like the painter, no longer recognizes his interpretive function; he seeks to go beyond it; and his audience diminishes. And so the world we inhabit, which is always new, goes by unexamined, made ordinary by the camera, unmeditated on; and there is no one to awaken the sense of true wonder. (245) As a "fair definition of the novelist's purpose, in all ages" (245), this passage seems at least partially at odds with Naipaul's own increasingly bleak fiction and with his achievement in this vol• ume. Here, in penetrating and contentious analyses of Third World corruption, he fulfills his own demands for examination, meditation, and interpretation, if not for wonder. Though he subordinates these essays to the thematically similar novels he wrote later ( Guerrillas and A Bend in the River), though he claims no "further unity" than comes from "intensity" and an "obses• sional nature" ("Author's Note"), the book is ideologically con• sistent and intricately designed: each essay offers "a vision of the world's half-made societies as places which continuously made and unmade themselves" (233), to borrow Naipaul's account of Nostromo; each of the first three essays has an apt citation from ARIEL: A Review of International English Literature, 24:2, April 1993 102 TRACY WARE Conrad, whom the last essay considers at length. -

Building: Imperial College, London Location: White City, London Architect: Aukett Swanke Main Contractor: Laing O’Rourke WWW.KAWNEER.CO.UK Imperial College, London Kawneer systems get under the skin of a new campus Modular or off-site curtain walling by Kawneer has played a key role in a building which forms the centrepiece of Imperial College London’s new White City campus. The bespoke, twin-skin and triple-glazed ventilated curtain walling, based on Kawneer’s unitised AA®201 system, features on the main south elevation of the Molecular Sciences Research Hub (MSRH) in the college’s first new campus in over a century. Designed for fast-track installation, it has been used alongside a single-skin version of the AA®201 curtain walling on the north façade and feature AA®720 fixed light casement windows and AA®720 commercial entrance doors. The AA®720 range is Kawneer’s most thermally efficient. The 26,000m2 landmark building designed by Aukett Swanke was initially delivered as a shell and core scheme in late 2016, alongside the new Translation and Innovation Hub as part of the college’s second-phase £110m development which followed the architects’ Phase 1 post- graduate student accommodation project. -

Memories of Norland and North Kensington in the 1960s Meriel and Ian Tegner moved to 44, Norland Square in 1961. There were only three family houses in the square; otherwise the houses were in multiple occupancy. No 44 had been converted into four flats in the 1940s and they lived in the top two floors. Their next door neighbours were an Irish couple in the basement on a controlled rent of 7/6d per week. In the middle of the house were 38 newly arrived West Indians. The top floor was occupied by a blonde prostitute whose clients would queue up along the chicken wire fence of the Square gardens (there were no railings then as the original ones had been removed for the war effort). Clients would wait their turn before being despatched 20 minutes later. The Irishman told Ian that he “should not be bringing a nice young bride to this part of London”. This was “north of the park” and not long after the Notting Hill Riots. Although houses in Clarendon Road, at the Holland Park Avenue end, were prosperous with long term family residents, and Addison Avenue and St James’s Gardens also mainly had family houses, in the north east section of St James’s Gardens and elsewhere in the area most of the houses were in multiple occupancy. Friends of the Tegners who had tried to buy a house on the east side of Norland Square in 1958 for £8,000 had been refused a mortgage as the area was thought too dicey. There was also still a possibility that the houses on that side of the Square would be demolished for an extension northwards of the new Abbotsbury Road. -

Th e 2-week conference, convened by R. D. Laing and leading fi gures in the anti-psychiatry movement, featured contributions from Beat Generation writers William Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg; Emmett Grogan, founder of the San Francisco anarchist movement Th e Diggers; and the Frankfurt School neo-Marxist, Herbert Marcuse (Cooper 1968: 9). Th e conference practised the countercultural values that it preached, spontaneously transforming the Roundhouse and Camden ’ s pubs and bars into informal collegiums, the founding event of the anti-university of London (Ibid., 11). Black Power, a movement that had emerged at the cutting edge of the American Civil Rights struggle the year before, had several representatives at the conference. Th e headline black radical and the most controversial speaker by far was Howe ’ s fellow Trinidadian and childhood friend, Stokely Carmichael, now the harbinger of the Black Power revolution. Th e British press responded to his visit by branding him ‘ an evil campaigner of hate ’ and ‘ the most eff ective preacher of racial hatred at large today ’ (Humphry and Tindall 1977: 63). -
