Protect Yourself From Scams The Newtown Township Police continue to receive complaints from residents who have fallen victim to a scam. Scams originate via phone, email, or social media. Scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to get your money or personal information. Scams target everyone Scams succeed because they look like the real thing and catch you off guard when you’re not expecting it, exploiting your desire to be polite, respectful, generous, compassionate, and good natured. Scammers will also try to add a sense of urgency into the scam in hopes of catching you off guard. It’s not only the naïve and gullible who fall victim; all of us may be vulnerable to a scam at some time- scams target people of all backgrounds, ages and income levels across the country. Protect yourself with these tips: • Be alert to the fact that scams exist. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. • Know who you’re dealing with. If you’ve only ever met someone online or are unsure of the legitimacy of a business, take some time to do a bit more research. • Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows or emails – delete them. • Don’t use the contact details provided in the message sent to you. • Contact the Police if you are concerned or suspect something suspicious!

PUBLIC WORKS NEWS NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP NEWS TOWNSHIPNEWTOWN Don’t Put That In Your Recycling! The residents of Newtown Township have been doing a lot of good work in the area of recycling. The new carts are getting a heavy workout with lots of material being pulled from your home’s waste stream and put out for collection to be recycled. The fact that we offer “single stream” recycling, and that all of your recyclable paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass can go into one cart makes it that much easier. Sometimes there can be confusion whether something is “recyclable” or “trash” though. While so many materials can be recycled, many still cannot, and if those non-recyclable materials get mixed in with the good material, all that good material can get contaminated and forced to be thrown out. Here are some common items which have shown up in recycling but are TRASH and contaminate the recycling stream:

Items You Can NOT Recycle Don’t be discouraged! The list of non-recyclable items above may seem large, but (please place in your trash) the list of items you CAN recycle is huge. Residential Single-Stream Recycling Collections occur from each home twice every month: Zone #1 on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and Zone #2 on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays. There is no collection when there is a 5th Thursday in a month. Be sure to have your recycling out and ready to be collected before 7:00 AM. MARPLE NEWTOWN  SPRING 2018 21 PUBLIC WORKS NEWS Keep Yard Waste Away from Streams Dumping grass clippings, leaves and other debris into streams and floodplains is a serious threat to our local streams. It also violates state and local floodplain and water quality ordinances. Yard waste piled along stream edges suffocates and kills the trees and shrubs that are critical for avoiding stream bank erosion. Storms can also easily wash yard clippings left in the floodplain into the stream. Yard waste carries a harmful excess of nutrients to the stream, which in turn robs the stream of oxygen needed by fish and aquatic insects. Grass clippings carelessly blown into the street while cutting your lawn is not only unsightly to your neighbors – it can and does wash into storm drains, causing damage to water quality, flooding, impeding stream flow, and creating areas of stagnant water that may create mosquito problems. A few tips for handling yard waste: • Follow Newtown Township’s schedules for drop off or collection of leaves and yard waste. • Compost leaves or yard waste whenever possible. Find out more about composting and yard disposal from the Delaware County Solid Waste Authority at www.co. delaware.pa.us/SWA • Use proper grass mowing techniques, and fertilize your lawn the easy way by letting the grass clippings REMAIN there instead of collecting them! Never blow them into the street or a stream. • Allow leaves and woody debris from the ground in natural areas of your property to remain. Leaves, twigs, and branches provide a great source of food and nutrients for microorganisms that are critical to maintaining healthy soils and plants. For more resources on this and other stormwater topics, please visit Newtown Township’s “Stormwater/MS4” page at www.newtowntownship.org. Newtown Square in Bloom (NSiB) has begun development of a Rain Garden Project in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC). The Project will offer design and construction of residential rain gardens. The gardens will be at a greatly reduced cost to the homeowner as a result of grant requests that will be submitted in early 2018. Haverford Township has had a similar program and planted 10 gardens last year. NSiB hopes to have the program ready by 2019. Rain gardens divert roof & driveway runoff that surges into the streets, sewers & streams carrying pollution with it; retain more runoff than traditional retention basins; reduce flooding; purifies runoff; and reduces the burden on the storm sewer system. The check is for Paws for Healing. Paws for Healing is an organization that rescues dogs and trains them to aide veterans returning from deployment. Paws for Healing not only helps our veterans but also gives dogs a home and a chance to help their recipients with everyday tasks that many of us take for granted. The MNNIEA is comprised of custodians, groundkeepers, maintenance workers, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and bus aides. Dr. Kane has been very active in supporting this effort. Through Dr. Kane’s hard work, Paxon Hollow students raised over $3,000, which is the cost to rescue and train an animal to be presented to a deserving veteran.

Culbertson Elementary Holiday Food Drive This year’s Culbertson Elementary Holiday Food Drive was a tremendous success. Culbertson collected a total of $1,010 in monetary and gift card donations from Culbertson families, faculty and community members. The Student Council assembled 10 Thanksgiving baskets filled with all the sides for a Thanksgiving dinner and $70 in gift cards that were given to families in need within the school community. They also donated over 1,900 items (food and toiletries) to The Saint Mark’s food bank in Broomall as well as making a $120 donation to The Saint Mark’s food bank.
