Princeton University Department of History HST 468 - Senior Seminar: The History of Southern Africa Kim Worthington Wednesdays 9-12 Aaron Burr Hall - Room 213 Contact Information Email: [email protected] Office: Dickinson Hall, Room 101 Office Hours: Thursday 2:00-4:00 (or by appointment through WASS) Course Description This course aims to equip students with an understanding of the history of Southern Africa, focusing in particular on South Africa from the 18th to the 20th century. Southern Africa is a large and diverse region, with a rich and complex history dating back to the cradle of civilization. We will therefore only be looking at certain key moments and events. We will consider how the history of the region has been written, and from whose perspective. The course will touch on a range of issues, from settlement and displacement, slavery, colonialism, and projects of empire, to institutionalized racism, industrialization and its implications for communities, workers, and migration, State control of people and movement, local political activism in a continental and global context, urbanization, and other topics. A key learning outcome will be to develop an understanding of historiographical debates: Who writes history? In what context? To what are historians responding? What are a scholar’s aims, and what earlier historical understanding does s/he engage? Does s/he support or challenge accepted interpretations of the past? Students are not expected to have an in-depth grasp of any particular debates, but more to gain insight into how understandings of history and the events and people historical writings describe change over time. -

He was beloved by many, respected by his colleagues at the bar and even by political enemies.2 He was an expert on gold law and water rights, represented Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, the most prominent capitalist in the land, and was appointed a King's Counsel by the National Party government, which was simultaneously shaping the system of apartheid.' He was also a Communist, who died under sentence of life imprisonment. -

Institutions in Crisis CRISIS OF PURPOSE IN THE IVY LEAGUE The Harvard Presidency of Lawrence Summers and the Context of American Higher Education Rebecca Dunning and Anne Sarah Meyers In 2001, Lawrence Summers became the 27th president of Harvard Univer- sity. Five tumultuous years later, he would resign. The popular narrative of Summers’ troubled tenure suggests that a series of verbal indiscretions created a loss of confidence in his leadership, first among faculty, then students, alumni, and finally Harvard’s trustee bodies. From his contentious meeting with the faculty of the African and African American Studies Department shortly af- ter he took office in the summer of 2001, to his widely publicized remarks on the possibility of innate gender differences in mathematical and scientific aptitude, Summers’ reign was marked by a serious of verbal gaffes regularly reported in The Harvard Crimson, The Boston Globe, and The New York Times. The resignation of Lawrence Summers and the sense of crisis at Harvard may have been less about individual personality traits, however, and more about the context in which Summers served. Contestation in the areas of university governance, accountability, and institutional purpose conditioned the context within which Summers’ presidency occurred, influencing his appointment as Harvard’s 27th president, his tumultuous tenure, and his eventual departure. Let a second generation full of courage issue forth, Let a people loving freedom come to growth, Let a beauty full of healing and a strength of final clenching be the pulsing in our spirits and our blood . Let the martial songs be written, Let the dirges disappear . Let a race of men rise and take control . – MARGARET WALKER, “FOR MY PEOPLE” I HAVE INTRODUCED THIS CHAPTER with an extract from Margaret Walker’s poem “For My People” .1 It is a verse from the African-American experience of slavery and dehumanisation . The poem was first published in 1942, and could be viewed as a precursor to the civil rights movement . It ends with a “call to arms”, but it is also an affirmation of the struggle for social justice . This poem resonated with Steve Biko and Black Consciousness activists because the call for a “new earth” to arise, the appeal to courage, freedom and healing, constituted the precise meaning and intent of the gospel of Black Consciousness . Margaret Walker does not so much dwell on the pain of the past or of lost hopes . She recognised the mood of confusion and fallacy that propelled 391 THE PAN-AFRICAN PANTHEON the foundation of the Black Consciousness Movement so many years later on another continent and under different circumstances . The poem is confident and positive in asserting the humanity of black people and of their capacity to become agents of their own liberation . -

“What I say will not be understood”: Intertextuality as a subversive force in Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter. Susan Barrett In 1963 the South African government passed The Publications and Entertainment Act which made it possible to ban not only works which were considered blasphemous or obscene but also any work which “brings any section of the inhabitants into ridicule or contempt, is harmful to the relations between any sections of the inhabitants; is prejudicial to the safety of the State, the general welfare or the peace and good order” (Essential Gesture, 61). Under this act almost 9 000 works were banned including, predictably, all those which made any mention of communism and most of the works of Black South African writers in exile. The censorship laws were further tightened by an amendment in 1974, so that by the time Nadine Gordimer’s seventh novel Burger’s Daughter was published in 1979, some 20 000 titles were prohibited in South Africa and the list was being updated weekly. Burger’s Daughter, was published in London in June 1979 and the following month banned in South Africa because, according to the Censorship Board, amongst other things: The book is an outspoken furthering of communism […] [it] creates and fosters a sense of grievance which is most undesirable in a political situation where there are racial situations [sic] […it] doesn’t possess one particularly positive quality – of creation, insight, style, language or composition – which can save it as work of art or as contribution to the public welfare. […] The effect of the book on the public attitude of mind is dangerous in all aspects. -

Introduction Many of us remain unaware that among the members of the American Philological Association (Society for Classical Studies since 2014) during the latter half of the nine- teenth century were people of African and African American descent, for little or noth- ing had been written about them before the American Philological Association published my pamphlet, The First Three African American Members of the American Philological Association in 2001. We have, however, understood for some time that Americans from the late eighteenth century through the nineteenth century were engaged in heated argu- ments about the appropriate type of education needed by Americans in general, and particularly over the needs of the newly-freed slaves after the Civil War. What we had not yet realized was that these were also concerns among members of the black diasporic community itself, which understood that the study of ancient Greek and Latin had long been the intellectual standard -

McClendon’s book, the first complete text devoted to James’s magnum opus, is a seminal contribution to Marxist-Leninist Stephen C. Ferguson II philosophy as well as to the scholarship on the Trinidadian Auburn University revolutionary activist/intellectual C. L. R. James.
