"Anacreon; ou, 1' Amour Fugitif," opera-ballet in two acts, book by Citoyen Mendouze, music by Citoyen Cherubini, ballet arranged by Citoyen Gardel, was produced at the Opera, Paris, on "le 11 vendemiaire, an XII." (October 4,* 1803). The chief singers were Lays (or Lay), Anacreon; Mme. Branchu, Corinne; Miss Jannard, Venus; Miss Lacombe, Glycere; Miss Hymm, 1' Amour; Miss CholLet, premiere esolave; Bloy, Bathille; Mme. Gardel, Athanais (a dancing and singing character). The chief dancers were Mmes. Gardel, Vestris, Taglioni, Coulon, and le Citoyen Vestris. The opera in rehearsal was known as 'Anacreon chez lui." The libretto was condemned as intolerably stupid, yet certain scenes provoked wild gayety, as when Anacreon, wishing drink, addressed his favorite odalisque as "Esclave intdressante." The laughter was loud and long; the actor was unable for some time to continue. The dissatisfaction of the audience found vent at last in hissing; and it is said that "Anacreon" was the first opera hissed at this theatre.     Is now the time to retire The Star-Spangled Banner? by Daniel Hathaway During the recent demonstrations responding to the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, a number of monuments were toppled that represented the racist history of the United States. Among them, in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and elsewhere, statues memorializing Francis Scott Key were pulled down. Key was author of the poem Defence of ​ Fort M’Henry, inspired by the British ​ bombardment in Baltimore Harbor in September 1814, that became the text of The Star-Spangled Banner. Joined to a tune ​ ​ by British composer John Stafford Smith, the song was officially adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1889 and became our National Anthem by resolution of Congress in 1931. The problem with Francis Scott Key, a Baltimore lawyer and district attorney, is that he had owned slaves since 1800. While he went on public record to oppose human trafficking, he also represented the owners of runaway slaves. The problem with his poem is that for 21st-century America, its sentiments seem less and less conducive to uniting a divided nation. The “Star-Spangled Banner” refers to the mammoth flag (originally measuring 30 by 42 feet) with fifteen stars and stripes symbolizing the states that formed the Union at the time. Raised “by dawn’s early light,” the flag, now owned by the Smithsonian Institution, offered proof of an American victory over the British during the War of 1812. Fittingly for the occasion that inspired it, Key’s poem begins with military imagery.

    Last night, after another wonderful concert in the fantastic setting of the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, we said goodbye to the Conchord Ensemble. We have had three brilliant days with them, and they were a great hit at Parkland Primary School yesterday morning too. However, we can’t dwell on the past - today we look forward to the concert at Newton with Christian Li and Gordon Back at 7.30pm. This concert is a sell-out, but there may be some returns if you want to try on the door, but we can’t guarantee a seat. Today’s concert is sponsored by Mike and Judy Thompson and by Aston Lark Insurance. We are very grateful to them for enabling us to put on this concert. Many of our concerts this year sold out very quickly. You, as Friends, know the benefits of being a Friend and getting priority booking, and this is becoming more and more important as the popularity of the Gower Festival increases year on year. Therefore, if you have any friends who enjoy coming to the concerts, but are not Friends of the Gower Festival, do encourage them to join us. On Saturday we have two concerts! The first is at 1.00pm at Gowerton School (SA4 3DL) and is a Children’s Concert - a concert for adults and children, at which the performers are all children from Gowerton School and Ysgol Gyfun Gŵyr. Please do come along and support these youngsters if you are able to. Both schools have a strong musical tradition and have produced some notable musicians including Sir Karl Jenkins, Alun Hoddinott, Mark Thomas, Dennis O’Neill, John Hugh Thomas etc.

    Das Biberacher Orchester im Spiegel der Wirkungsgeschichte von Justin Heinrich Knecht Aufsatz von Kulturdezernent Dr. Jörg Riedlbauer Die künstlerische Musikpflege wie auch das Theater gehörten bis zur Französischen Revolution und außerhalb Frankreichs noch bis in das 19. Jahrhundert hinein zum Dekor der feudal- aristokratischen Machtrepräsentation. Institutionalisierte Orchester, die von der Bürgerschaft getragen wurden, waren zu Zeiten des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation noch in der Minderzahl. Instrumentalmusik für bürgerliche Kreise blieb meist auf Gebrauchsmusik ohne son- derlichen künstlerischen Anspruch beschränkt. Eigens geprobt wurde in der Regel nicht; es han- delte sich um ein vom Blatt-Spiel vor Zuhörern. Insoweit kommt den durch Zeitzeugen belegten „rigorosen Proben“ des Biberacher Musikdirektors Justin Heinrich Knecht besondere Bedeutung zu1. Die Professionalisierung des bürgerlichen Musiklebens setzte nämlich erst allmählich ein und wurde von höheren Kreisen in größeren Städten getragen. Meist waren es Ratsherren, Ärzte, An- wälte oder wohlhabende Kaufleute, die sich in den – konfessionell meist reformierten - Reichs- städten als Liebhaber der Musik zur gemeinsamen Ausübung der Tonkunst regelmäßig zusam- men fanden und, angeleitet vom Kantor oder einem anderen Sachverständigen, öffentlich spiel- ten, zuweilen auch unter Hinzuziehung von professionellen Musikern. Sie hoben sich damit von den örtlichen Gelegenheits-Musikanten ab, die in wechselvollen Ad hoc-Besetzungen mal hier, mal dort zu diversen Anlässen aufspielten. Hervorgegangen sind die Musizierfreundeskreise, die in zeitgenössischen Quellen in der Regel als „Collegium Musicum“ bezeichnet werden, aus der Spielpraxis des „Convivium Musicum“, bei dem ein Gastmahl im Mittelpunkt stand. The edition of music comprises more than one half of the paper, and is taken from the original manuscript scores used. Included in the edition are five concerted anthems for choir and orchestra, and eighteen hymns from eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Moravian tunebooks. The special texts come from an original set of orders of service. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four "festive" settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland," thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man.
