We see their impact in the economy, the legal system, our media and now our Parliament. It is important this contribution is recognised which is why I welcome British Bangladeshi Who's Who 2011. I congratulate all of those who appear in it and make such an important contribution to our nation. 4 British Bangladeshi Who’s Who 2011 STATEMENT FROM THE LONDON MAYOR: This publication is a fantastic way of highlighting the vast and wide-ranging achievements of Bangladeshi communities in London and the UK. I am pleased to see so many Bangladeshis making their mark in every sphere of en- deavour and getting the recognition which they so richly deserve. In business, the arts, media, literature, and financial services, to name a few, Bangladeshis are making a vital contribution to the capital’s economy and society. There's a big community spirit amongst Bangladeshis in London and I'd like to see even more people giving something back by getting involved in Team London, my ambitious vision to get Londoners volunteering to help tackle some of the city’s social issues. Whether you are interested in reading to a child, making your local park safer, or looking out for an eld- erly person in your area, the key thing is to get involved. With less than a year to go to the London 2012 Games, there are lots of opportunities to volunteer during the Olympics and really make these the best Games the world has ever seen! I wish Abdul Karim and his team the best of luck with this year’s event and hope the publication goes from strength to strength in future years. Boris Johnson Mayor of London British Bangladeshi Who’s Who 2011 5 Message from the High Commissioner I am happy to know that the Bangla Mirror is going to publish its fifth edition of British Bangladeshi Who’s Who. The contributions of expatriate Bangladeshis to politics, business, art and cultural, education, and other professions are something to be proud of. We all appreciate their sacrifice, determination and striving for the remarakable success. There is no doubt that the success of Bangladeshi communities in the UK would further enhance our image and reputation to the global communities. The determination and endless ef- forts to make the noteworthy achievements would eventually drive the young gen- eration to move step further in the way of success. We, all Bangladeshis, are proud to be a part of the success stories. The recognition of the achivements of our communities living in the United Kingdom is indeed a commendable initiative. The Bangladeshis living in home and abroad could know about the achievements and accomplishments through the publicaion, and would also encourage them to do the same for them and for the country as well. I gladly recognize the brillant endeavours of the Bangla Mirror and look forward to see- ing their full co-operation and engagement in building a flourishing Bangladeshi com- munity in the UK. I wish the Bangladesh Mirror’s endeavour would meet with notable success in the coming years. 6 British Bangladeshi Who’s Who 2011 Foreword from the Editor in Chief Now in its fourth year, we sincerely hope that our readers can appreciate the progress that has been made. British Bangladeshi Who’s Who has become the definitive guide as to the ‘movers and shakers’ of the Bangladeshi community in Britain. The gems we have unearthed in the form of ‘unsung heroes’ I believe signifies the true value of a publication of this nature: the ability to unearth those from our com- munity who make a real contribution to Britain. I hope that you find this year’s edition as exciting to read as previous editions. Abdul Karim (Goni) British Bangladeshi Who’s Who 2011 7 Foreword from the Editor This publication in my view has gone from strength to strength. What started off as a project between a father and his son has mushroomed into what I believe to be an authoritative guide as to exactly Who’s Who in the Bangladeshi community here in Britain. The publication also highlights the contribution made by our community at a time when the integration and value of minority and ethnic communities are coming under constant challenge by the media and other sections of the community. I do sincerely hope that you find this year’s publication an interesting read.
