The Fumee Creek Watershed consists of nine sub-watersheds in a linear urban area between the hills of the Menominee Iron Range and the Menominee River and was identified as a priority in the 1992 Menominee River Basin Plan. This project controlled nonpoint source pollution sources in order to maintain and restore warm and cold water fishery designated uses. A wide range of Best Management Practices were installed on 16 sites and addressed pollution from urban, transportation, agriculture, mining, shoreline, recreation, and residential sources and included over 25 different partners. Fumee Falls Roadside Park Recreation Area (Before Photo, Above) experienced heavy foot traffic on a steep rocky slope, causing a network of 3-foot deep eroded gullies that contributed 160 cubic years of sediment to Fumee Creek at the base of the falls. (After Photos, Right) Gullies were filled and vegetated using geoweb, rock terracing, and trees. Foot traffic was redirected with paths and a stairway up the slope to an overlook. A 50-foot section of Fumee Creek was restored by removing deposited sediment and armoring the restored width. .
