He has warned about the temptations of buying fair things at wonderful prices rather than wonderful things at fair prices, and then in almost the very next breath, laid out the two rules for winning–the first being not to lose and the second being not to forget the first rule. Easier said than done, perhaps, but Buffett has proven himself capable of practicing what he preaches. Such restraint has made him immensely successful. A fact that hasn’t escaped his attention either. “I always knew I was going to be rich,” he once said. “I don’t think I ever doubted it for a minute.” We haven’t had much reason to doubt it either. Buffett is the second richest American and the fourth richest person in the world billionaire’s list at $58.2 billion, down slightly from last September when we sharpened our pencils and calculated his fortune at $58.5 million. He’s been a fixture at the Top 5 for the past two decades and has appeared on every one of our 28 billionaires issues. Buffett’s pal Bill Gates is not only the wealthiest American but the wealthiest in the world. He’s No. 1 with $76 billion. While Buffett slipped, Gates is up–by $4 billion.
