The Nordic Model The Nordic The Nordic Model Is there a Nordic model? What are the main characteristics of the Nord- ics? What challenges are they facing? Is the Nordic welfare state viable -Embracingglobalizationandsharingrisks in conditions of globalization and ageing populations? What reforms Embracing globalization and sharing risks are needed? The Nordic countries have attracted much international attention in re- cent years. The school system in Finland has repeatedly been ranked the best in the world. The Swedish pension reform is a benchmark in the international debate. Danish “flexicurity” figures prominently on the policy agenda in the EU and the OECD. The economic performance of the Nordic countries has been impressive in comparative terms: rapid growth, high employment, price stability, healthy surpluses in government finances. The Nordics have embraced globalization and new technologies. Cross-country comparisons sup- port the view that the Nordics have been successful in reconciling eco- nomic efficiency with social equality. While successful in the past, the Nordic model is facing increasingly Andersen, Holmström, Honkapohja, Korkman, Söderström,Vartiainen Andersen, Holmström,Honkapohja,Korkman, serious challenges in the future. Globalization and the demographic transformation have major consequences for labour markets and the public sector. The viability of the Nordic welfare state as it exists today is put into question. This report offers an in-depth analysis of the Nordic model, explaining its key features and evaluating its performance as well as setting out its challenges. It examines many of the “quick fixes” put forward in public debate and explains why they are unrealistic or based on erroneous rea- soning.

One of the main things I have learned is that people do not like talking about… death and dying. People would rather talk about anything else, just not that topic. However, death is part of life and it is something that we all must face. Are we prepared for death? Death impacts us all. As I think back on deaths in my life, two come to mind immediately. The first is that of my Aunt Betty. I had worked for my aunt on the farm (my first paying job) and other various jobs and she and I had a close relationship. My grandma, cousin and aunt were going over to Owen-Withee to get a ham in December of 1982. They were making a left-hand turn and a truck driver did not see them turning and hit the car. My grandma and cousin survived but my Aunt Betty did not. It was my first experience with death that I can re- member. It was made worse by an event that happened at the funeral home the day of the funeral.

  • Episode 6: Drazen Petrovic and Basketball’S Cold War
Death at the Wing Episode 6: Drazen Petrovic and Basketball’s Cold War ⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Back in 1988, the USA Men’s Basketball team did something they almost never did... ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: The United States found themselves in a position in the last seven minutes of this game of having to score on almost every possession and they could not. After winning 9 of the last 10 Olympics they competed in, they lost. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: But there’s no time, really, for even a miracle now. And the Soviets are already celebrating. The USA suddenly found itself wearing bronze. It did not go over well. And so, as the dust settled, they decided to do what America does best: get better through hard work, inch by inch, grinding it out… I’m kidding. No, we did the real American thing. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: What may well be the best basketball team ever assembled… ...which is throwing lots of money at something to make even more money. And so, for the next Olympics, they formed a super squad of sorts. No more amateurs. It was time to bend the rules a little bit and bring in the pros. And, of course, bring in Reebok to sponsor it. ARCHIVAL ANNOUNCER: And now, the United States of America. This was the Dream Team. Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan. This wasn’t about winning gold. This was about buying the whole fucking gold mine. Shock and awe. 1 But in Barcelona in 1992, one player in all of the Olympics didn’t get the memo... or fax.

  • Enlist Your Dream Team Board
Enlist Your Dream Team Board How to enlist the right team who can catapult your organization to a whole new level! Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. Margaret Mead Enlist Your Dream Team Board © Gail Perry 2014 www.gailperry.com 1 How we enlist and manage our boards has everything to do with their ultimate success, not only in fundraising but in the leadership they offer our organization as well. There are many factors that play into creating an effective board of trustees for a nonprofit organization. We all know it is not an easy job. Who is on the board matters of course, as well as how all the members work together. How they are recruited can set up high expectations or lead to failure. Factors that Impact a Board’s Performance Who is on the board How the members work together How they are recruited How they are oriented How expectations are set How they are led How they are assessed Creating a great board may seem like an impossible dream. But it’s not. If you decide that you want to have a high performing board, one that has talented, effective and passionate members who work smoothly together, guess what: it is entirely possible. The approach you use to enlist new board members can set up your board to be a dynamic team that tackles its charge with energy, responsibility, and heart—or not. A high-quality, formal, organized enlistment and orientation process will set you apart from other organizations and will ready you and your organization to win.
