  • The Commercial Dugong and Marine Turtle Fisheries, 1847–1969
Australian Economic History Review, Vol. 48, No. 3 November 2008 ISSN 0004-8992 doi: 10.1111/j.1467-8446.2008.00240.x EXPLOITING MARINE WILDLIFE IN QUEENSLAND: THE COMMERCIAL DUGONG AND MARINE TURTLE FISHERIES, 1847–1969 By Ben Daley,Peter Griggs and Helene Marsh James Cook University The historical exploitation of marine resources in Queensland has only been partially documented. In particular, the history of the commercial fishing of dugongs and marine turtles has received comparatively little scholarly attention. Since European settlement in Queensland, various human activities have exploited these resources. We present documentary and oral history evidence of the scale of those industries. Based on extensive archival and oral history research, we argue that diverse fishing practices occurred and that the sustained exploitation of dugongs, green turtles, and hawksbill turtles led to observable declines in the numbers of these animals – now species of conservation concern. JEL categories: N57, O13, Q22, Q29, Q57 Keywords: commercial fisheries, dugongs, Great Barrier Reef, marine turtles, Australia INTRODUCTION Europeans began settling what was to become the British colony of Queensland in northeast Australia from the 1820s onwards. Here they encountered a land that contained abundant resources that could be exploited: forests rich in red cedar; minerals, particularly gold, coal, tin and copper; and fertile soils that supported crops of sugar cane, maize, and wheat. Well-grassed land enabled a thriving pastoral industry to be established rapidly and dairying was flourishing in the better-watered parts of southern Queensland by 1900.1 The coastal waters were also resource-rich, containing pearl-shell, bêche-de-mer, marine turtles, dugongs, 1 For the best general account of the exploitation of Queensland’s resources until 1915, see Fitzgerald, From the Dreaming to 1915.

  • Geographic History of Queensland
Q ueeno1anb. GEOGRAPHIC HISTORY of CLUEENSLAND. DEDICATED TO THE QUEENSLAND PEOPLE. BY ARCHIBALD MESTON. "IN all other offices of life ' I praise a lover of his friends, and of his native country, but in writing history I am obliged to d}vest myself of all other obligations, and sacrifice them all to truth ."- Polybiua. "Polybius weighed the authors from whom he was forced to borrow the history of the times preceding his own , and frequently corrected them , either by comparing them with each other, or by the light which be had received from ancient men of known integrity among the Romans, who had been conversant with those affairs which were then managed , and were yet living to instruct him. 'He who neglected none of the laws of history was so careful of truth that he made it his whole business to deliver nothing to posterity which might deceive them ."- Dryden 'a " Character of Polybiua." BRISBANE: BY AUTHORITY : EDMUND GREGORY GOVERNMENT PRINTER. 1895. This is a blank page AUTHOR'S PREFACE. Geography and history being two of the most important branches of human knowledge, and two of the most essential in the education of the present age„ it seems peculiarly desirable that a book devoted to both subjects should be made interesting, and appear something more than a monotonous list of names and cold bare facts, standing in dreary groups, or dismal isolation, like anthills on a treeless plain, destitute of colouring, life, and animation. In accordance with that belief, I have left the hard and somewhat dusty orthodox roadway, and out a " bridle track " in a new direction, gladly believing that the novelty and variety will in no way interfere with the instruction, which is the primary guiding principle of the work.

Draft Version 7.0 June 2008 PREPARATION STATEMENT The Burrum Catchment Water Quality Improvement Plan (WQIP) was drafted by Dr Michael Walker, Water Management Officer, Mary & Burrum, Wide Bay Water Corporation (WBWC). Funding for this task was provided jointly by the Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management (BMRG) and Wide Bay Water Corporation under a strategic partnership to improve water quality. The Burrum Catchment Water Quality Improvement Plan covers the Burrum, Cherwell, Gregory and Isis River catchments, which discharge via the Burrum estuary to Hervey Bay. Assistance was provided by Dr Graeme Esslemont Water Quality and Equitable Use Coordinator, BMRG (formerly a member of the short term modelling project team set up to assist NRM bodies with their target setting responsibilities under the Reef Water Quality Protection Plan). Dr Esslemont undertook the necessary modelling work (SedNet and ANNEX) one of the tools used to set water quality targets utilised in this plan.
