The Politics of Nursing Knowledge The Politics of Nursing Knowledge The entry of nursing into higher education has raised a number of questions about its academic identity and future. The Politics of Nursing Knowledge puts into context the historical factors which have shaped the development of nurse education and lays the foundations for an historical sociology of nursing knowledge. Based on substantial new research and drawing on government and professional records, The Politics of Nursing Knowledge looks at how nurse education has been shaped by wider social attitudes towards gender and class. In a critical reappraisal of Florence Nightingale’s vision of nursing, Anne Marie Rafferty explores the implications of Nightingale’s belief that nursing training should be regarded as an education of character rather than an intellectual discipline. Analysing the relationship between nursing and associated professions, the author traces the evolution of training and policy-making from the origins of hospital reform in the 1860s to the start of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948. Examining the contemporary issues affecting nursing, The Politics of Nursing Knowledge questions the extent to which the notion of a ‘profession’ is compatible with the career patterns and lifestyle opportunities of the majority of nurses, who are women. Looking to the future of nursing as an academic discipline, the final chapter asks whether an intellectually self-confident culture can emerge or whether the contradictions of professionalism and the health care system will prevent nursing from achieving its full potential. But nursing education has been characterised by the inculcation of moral values and virtues rather than intellectual prowess. A marching banner, made by members of the Townswomen’s Guilds, was presented to the College (see p2). The banner will be taken to key RCN events this year, including Congress, before going on permanent display in reception at RCN headquarters in London. The launch event also saw the unveiling of the RCN presidents’ exhibition, which features photographs of each president and short biographical extracts outlining their contributions to the College (see p5). There was much interest in the new major exhibition in the RCN Library and Heritage Centre. The Voice of Nursing explores how nursing has changed over the past 100 years by drawing on stories and experiences of members and items and artefacts from the RCN archives.

    Nursing at University College Hospital, London, 1862 - 1948. From Christian Vocation to Secular Profession. Janet Likeman A Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Institute of Education University of London 2002 1 Abstract This thesis examines the development of nursing at University College Hospital, London, between 1862, the year in which the All Saints Sisters assumed responsibility for the provision of nursing services at the hospital, and the introduction of the National Health Service in July 1948. Although the care provided by the sisters marked a considerable improvement on what had gone before, in 1899 they were replaced by nurses whose motivation was professional rather than vocational. The profession of nursing was confirmed by the Registration Act of 1919. Following an introduction, the initial chapters of the thesis are concerned with defining and developing the themes of Christian vocation and secular profession. Chapter four is devoted to nursing management across the period, and the following chapter to patterns of care. Prior to 1919 a system of primary care was in operation; this was superseded by task allocation. Chapters six and seven outline the introduction of nurse training in some of the London teaching hospitals in comparison to the training of nurses at U.C.H. An analysis of the probationer records from 1890 - 1948 demonstrates recruitment and retention through these years. With the departure of the All Saints Sisters from U.C.H. in 1899 the school of nursing was established. A preliminary training school was introduced in 1926; ten years later University College Hospital school of nursing pioneered the block system of training which became the norm for all schools of nursing after the Second World War.

Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing University of Toronto Abstract In the midst of the progressive era, American nursing and medical education witnessed tremendous reform. The increase in the number of hospitals during the early twentieth century brought a growing demand for nurses and led to varying standards in admissions and education within hospital training schools. In addition, the rise of the field of public health led to a campaign by a number of American nurse leaders to reform nursing education. This campaign included: the formation of several national professional organizations; gaining the support of prominent medical officials, including those close to the Rockefeller Foundation, an influential philanthropic organization; and successfully arguing against the sending of public health nurses overseas during the First World War. Although these steps were taken prior to the end of the war, the period immediately following the war, and the 1918 pandemic spread of influenza, provided fertile ground for reopening discussions regarding nursing education both nationally and internationally. Following the war, the involvement of numerous American-backed organizations, including the Rockefeller Foundation (RF), the League of Red Cross Societies (LRCS), and the American Red Cross (ARC), in the training of nurses in Europe highlighted the numerous ii iii and conflicting ideals of American nurses in regards to nursing education during this period.
