Anti-Muslim Hatred and Discrimination Submission from Dia Kayyali Associate Director of Advocacy at Mnemonic, independent consultant on technology and human rights, and co-chair of the Christchurch Call Advisory Network1 [email protected] Summary: This submission focuses on the online aspect of anti-Muslim hatred and discrimination (Islamophobia). Content that incites violence against Muslims is too often left up on major social media platforms, while important content produced by Muslims is often removed. This leads to diminishing opportunities for justice in conflict zones such as Syria, while facilitating increased violence against Muslim communities around the world. Furthermore, online content is never solely online. Rather, it is intimately linked to violence and discrimination against Muslims in a harmful feedback loop. How the online feeds into the offline and back again, creating a vicious cycle The online component of Islamophobia has deadly consequences for Muslims around the world. At the same time, predominantly Muslim communities see content they post online regularly removed by major social media companies. Islamophobia, like other social ills, is stuck in a dangerous feedback loop. Offline discrimination and violence lead to online hate speech and dangerous speech. This content then worsens discrimination, and sometimes directly incites offline violence and other negative consequences. The cycle is self-perpetuating, and it is deadly. Muslim lives have already been lost as a result, and Islamophobia threatens other essential human rights including freedoms of expression and religion. Who is Muslim? Islamophobia doesn’t just impact Muslims. As outlined in this submission, it also impacts people who are secular or practice other religions but are in Muslim majority countries or communities. -

Nazi Germany and Anti-Jewish Policy The Nazi Party rose to power with an antisemitic racial ideology. However, the anti-Jewish campaign was not conducted according to a blueprint, rather it evolved. Before the outbreak of the war, political and economic factors, as well as public opinion both inside and outside Germany influenced the evolution of Nazi anti-Jewish laws and measures. The main purpose of the anti-Jewish policy between 1933 and 1939 according to the racial theory was to isolate German Jewry from German society. These laws sought to uproot and dispossess Jews economically from daily life in Germany and Boycott entries before Jewish department store, 1933 encourage them to leave their homeland. These laws limited and humiliated Jews on a daily basis. Anti-Jewish Policy (1933–1939) Divided Into Three Periods n The first period, 1933–1934, included boycotts against Jews and the Civil Service Law that dismissed Jews from government jobs. n The second period began in the spring of 1935 and was marked by the establishment of the racially based Nuremberg Laws. Jews were no longer German citizens. n The third period from 1937–1939 was a time of increasing anti-Jewish violence, confiscation of Jewish property, and the forbidding of Jewish ownership of business concerns. The turning point of this period was the Kristallnacht Pogrom. Anti-Jewish Policy by Year 1933 n All non-“Aryans” were dismissed from holding government jobs. This regulation applied to public school teachers, university professors, doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc. — all Jews who held government positions of any kind. Non-“Aryans” were defined as Jews, the children of Jews, and the grandchildren of Jews. -

Fernandez-Morera: Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Me Comparative Civilizations Review 21 Some Overlooked Realities of Jewish Life under Islamic Rule in Medieval Spain Dario Fernandez-Morera [email protected] It is widely accepted that under Islam the Jewish community of Spain briefly enjoyed a “Golden Age.” However, it is far less widely understood that Muslim, Christian, and Jewish legal and historical sources indicate that favorable treatment violated medieval Islamic law and also that even under the best circumstances, Jews remained subject to the vicissitudes of their condition as dhimmis (“protected” non-Muslims). If there was brief good treatment, it was because of tactical needs of particular Muslim rulers, not legal considerations. Marginalized groups who side with a successful invader normally see their status rise with a change in the political fortunes.1 The Jewish community of Spain was no exception. -

Before the outbreak of the war, political and economic factors, as well as public opinion both inside and outside Germany influenced the evolution of Nazi anti-Jewish laws and measures. The main purpose of the anti-Jewish policy between 1933 and 1938 according to the racial theory was to isolate German Jewry from German society and ultimately encourage them to leave their homeland. Through 1938 and into 1939, more and more force was used to push Jews out of German territory. In addition to the fact that the laws and decrees were issued chronologically, they should also be understood for how they affected different spheres of life. They affected personal status, the interaction of Jews with general society, and their economic situation. The restrictions affected individuals and the Jewish community as a whole. After the Revolution, traditional Armenophobia began to decline and was replaced by a growing Judeophobia. Th e fi rst victims of the increasing anti-Semitism were the Mountain Jews. In the summer of 1926, there was a massive pogrom of Mountain Jews in Makhachkala and there were simultaneous pogroms in several other localities. Keywords North Caucasus, Armenia, antisemitism, mountain Jews, Armenophobia, pogrom Th e North Caucasus was not part of the Pale of Settlement, and therefore the percentage of Jewish population in the region was very low even in the towns, where there were only an insignifi cant number of Jews, primarily merchants and artisans. European Jews began to appear in the territory only in the 19th century, the only exception being Dagestan, where the compact communities of Mountain Jews had lived since the early Middle Ages. As a consequence, prior to 1917, the North Caucasus had experienced neither anti-Jewish pogroms, nor antisemitism. In their stead, Armenophobia dominated virtu- ally the entire region. In the absence of a Jewish population, Jew-baiting was practically non-existent. MASON 2005 All rights reserved SINNERS IN THE HANDS OF AN ANGRY MOB: VIOLENCE AGAINST RELIGIOUS OUTSIDERS IN THE U.S. SOUTH, 1865-1910 Abstract by Patrick Q. Mason Studies of violence in the late nineteenth-century South focus almost exclusively on racial and political violence against African Americans. While this emphasis is both understandable and appropriate, what has been largely neglected is the violence committed against religious outsiders, and more generally their overall treatment in what was essentially a hegemonic culture of evangelical Protestantism. In addition to the many instances of violence against African American churches and ministers, the South also witnessed dozens of episodes of anti-Jewish violence and literally hundreds of cases of anti-Mormon violence from 1865 to 1910. Acknowledging and understanding this relatively hidden chapter in American history provides us with unique insights into postbellum southern culture and the sometimes violent side of the American experiment in religious pluralism. This dissertation adds to the growing body of scholarship exploring the relationships between religion and violence in southern history and American history more broadly by making three primary contributions. First, it uncovers numerous untold narratives of violence against southern religious outsiders. -

Conference on Inter-Asian Connections Detail of migration map of Asia: courtesy UNHCR Conference Proceedings February 21-23, 2008 Dubai, United Arab Emirates Co-Organized by the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) and the Dubai School of Government (DSG) Funded by the Ford Foundation Sponsored by DSG, Zayed University, the University of Dubai, the National Bank of Dubai, and Dubai Properties INTRODUCTION This international conference brought together over one hundred fifty leading scholars from renowned universities to explore an exciting new frontier of “Inter-Asian” research. The conference was organized around eleven concurrent workshops featuring innovative research from the social sciences and related disciplines on themes of particular relevance across Asia. Workshop themes, directors, and participants were selected by an SSRC committee in a highly competitive process: the conference organizers received 105 applications for workshop directors and 582 applications for workshop participants. In addition to the eleven workshops, the conference also showcased the work of the South Asia Regional Fellowship Program (SARFP), bringing together fellows who had been awarded collaborative grants to work on inter-country projects in the South Asia region. The structure and schedule of the conference were designed to enable intensive working group interactions on a specific research theme, as well as broader interactions on topics of mutual interest and concern to all participants. Accordingly, a public keynote panel and plenaries addressing different aspects of Inter-Asian research were open to all participants as well as the general public. The concluding day of the conference brought all the workshops together in a public presentation and exchange of research agendas that emerged over the course of the deliberations in Dubai. -

Introduction Gujarat today has become one of the most industrialized states in India despite the fact that at the time of its formation in 1960 it had few prospects, with a stagnant agriculture base, declining textile sector and poor infrastructure.1 Gujarat’s goal is not only to compete with other states in India but with the emerging economies of the East Asia.2 The poverty level which was 46 percent in 1972/73 in Gujarat had been decreased to 16 percent by 2004/053 while the national average was still 27 percent. From the growth rate of 5.7 percent in the 1980s, Gujarat’s GDP increased to 10.4 percent in the 2002-2007 plan period, which is among the highest in India.4 II. Background After its creation, Gujarat was governed by the Congress Party until 1995 through an alliance of Brahmins and Banias5 in the major cities and Patidars in the rural areas.6 The coalition and consensus between these elites gave the stability in Gujarat till late 60s. However, when other socio-economic groups started to challenge the dominance of these high caste elites, the political situation started to become tense which to some degree is the root cause of the Hindu-Muslim tension in Gujarat today.
