Jacek Kulbaka DOi: 10.14746/bhw.2018.38.2 Maria Grzegorzewska University From the history of disabilities (16th-19th century) Abstract: The article presents various circumstances (social, legal, philosophical and scientific) connected with the care, upbringing and education of people with disabilities from the early modern era to the beginning of the 20th century. Particular attention was to the history of people with disa- bilities in the Polish lands. The author tried to recall the activity of leading educational activists, ped- agogues and scientists – animators of special education in Poland, Europe and the world. The text also contains information related to the activities of educational and upbringing institutions (institu- tional, organisational, methodological and other aspects). The aim of the study was to compare largely unpublished 19th century sources with more contemporary data on the use of wild food plants. Methods: The information on 19th century uses is based on twelve, mainly unpublished, responses to Józef Rostafiński’s questionnaire from 1883, and the newly discovered materials of the ethnographer Michał Federowski, who structured his data according to Rostafiński’s questionnaire and documented it with voucher specimens. Rostafiński’s questionnaire was concerned mainly with Polish territories, but for historical reasons this also encompassed a large part of Belarus, and we analyzed only the twelve responses (out of the few hundred Rostafiński obtained), which concerned the present Belarus. These data were compared with a few 20th century ethnographic sources, and our own 40 interviews and questionnaires from Belarus. Results and discussion: 58 taxa of wild food plants used in the 19th century were identified. Some of them are still used in modern Belarus, others are probably completely forgotten. -
Problemy Nauczania Dziewiętnastowiecznej Literatury Polskiej Studentów Obcokrajowców Na Poziomie Średnio Zaawansowanym

Problemy nauczania dziewiętnastowiecznej literatury polskiej studentów obcokrajowców na poziomie średnio zaawansowanym Pragnę podzielić się refleksjami i obserwacjami, jakie zgromadziłam podczas trzyletniego okresu prowadzenia zajęć z dziewiętnastowiecznej literatury polskiej na Uniwersytecie w Glasgow. Po ogólnym przedstawieniu programu i struktury zajęć, przejdę do omówienia głównych problemów, które zaprezentuję według następujących zagadnień i pytań: czy istnieje kanon dziewiętnastowiecznej literatury polskiej dla obcokrajowców i czy powinien istnieć? Jakie kryteria decydują o wyborze lektur w ramach kanonu? Metodologia nauczania: czego tak naprawdę uczę i dlaczego? W uwagach podsumowujących omówię podstawowe problemy dialogu międzykulturowego, jakie najczęściej się pojawiają w procesie nauczania wybranych tekstów i podzielę się własnymi rozwiązaniami, które już wpro- wadziłam lub zamierzam wprowadzić. PROGRAM I STRUKTURA ZAJĘĆ Zajęcia z dziewiętnastowiecznej literatury polskiej prowadzone są w Glas- gow na II roku studiów (ogólne wprowadzenie zagadnień) na etapie średnio zaawansowanym i na IV lub V roku na etapie zaawansowanym (szczegółowa analiza procesu historyczno-literackiego i złożonych, trudnych tekstów, nie zawsze dostępnych w tłumaczeniu). Należy tutaj jednocześnie wyjaśnić, że obecny program nie zakłada automatycznej kontynuacji studiów polonis- tycznych po II roku: studenci mogą, ale nie muszą znaleźć się w gronie magistrantów. Taki układ stawia przed wykładowcą podwójne zadanie: zapoznania studenta z polską literaturą XIX w. w taki sposób, żeby go nie przestraszyć i nie zniechęcić do dalszych studiów, a jednocześnie wyposażyć w niezbędną wiedzę dotyczącą dziewiętnastowiecznych okresów literackich, aby student po dwóch latach polonistyki zrozumiał np., co składa się na przekonanie, że literatura romantyczna była państwem duchowym Polaków, aby zrozumiał rangę romantyzmu dla kultury współczesnej i uświadomił sobie elementarne związki i wpływy wieku XIX na wiek XX. -

Initially associated with a political organization (“Solidarity Tucson”), which actively supported the Solidarity Movement throughout the 1980s, the Polish diaspora has gradually transformed into an ethnic community very much focused on maintaining its distinctive heritage. Recent formation of the Polish folkloric dance group Lajkonik was directly stimulated by the local multicultural establishment, which promotes ethnic diversity in the Old Pueblo. Having become an integral part of the Southwestern society, Lajkonik has developed a collection of identity practices, which despite diverse influences continues to reproduce Polish cultural traits. In my ethnographic account, I examine ways, by which members of the Lajkonik group construct their diasporic identities. First, I focus on the core activities of the group, which include the practice of Polish traditions, learning folk dances and songs in a wide cultural context, and negotiating the speaking of Polish. Additional analyses, based on video recordings, of Polish classes and dance rehearsals, which show the actual mechanics of the production processes, as well as the narratives of the teacher and parent of performers, further support the account of the ethnographer. -
A Note on Eliza Orzeszkowa
A Note on Eliza Orzeszkowa Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841–1910) is one of the most prolific and esteemed Polish prose writers of the nineteenth century. She was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1905 together with Leo Tolstoy and Henryk Sienkiewicz, who became the recipient of the prestigious award. Orzeszkowa began her writing career with her short story “Obrazek z lat głodnych” (A picture from the hungry years), published by the literary magazine Tygod- nik ilustrowany (The illustrated weekly) in 1866. She wrote novels, short stories, and a series of articles and commentaries on education, class dis- crimination, anti-Semitism, and women’s emancipation, all within the frame of Polish literary Positivism. Orzeszkowa achieved widespread fame at home and abroad with her famous roman-fleuve Nad Niemnem (On the banks of the Niemen, 1888), which dealt with traditional values of the Polish gentry, issues centering around marriage between members of different classes, and the effects of the January Uprising in Russian-occupied Poland. Throughout her lifetime Orzeszkowa fought for her personal independence by working as a writer; as a teacher at her house in Grodno, which she made available for girls who wanted to pursue their studies under her guidance; and as manager of her own bookstore, which was transformed into a publishing house in Wilno. Her novel Marta (1873) presents a widowed heroine facing a grim battle to earn a living in a time when employment opportunities for women were severely restricted; the book is representative of Orzeszkowa’s depiction of women and her skill at creating moving and powerful scenes in her fiction. -

Honorary Members Since its founding in 1898, the Polish Women’s Alliance of America has opened its doors and its heart to many people from all walks of life. Some of them were celebrated and many of them were women - writers, poets, artists, scientists, educators, social workers, members of religious orders, business leaders, journalists, and politicians. Relationships with Polish women who were activists and patriots, dedicated to changing the world and helping the disadvantaged, were especially meaningful. Their work brought them in contact with members of the PWA who were inspired to offer help and solidarity. To honor special bonds of friendship and a commitment to shared causes, the PWA National Board has, since 1903, extended Honorary Membership to nine internationally renowned women: • Maria Konopnicka, poet and author • Eliza Orzeszkowa, author • Helena Modrzejewska, actress • Helena Paderewska, humanitarian • Marie Sklodowska Curie, scientist • Maria Rodziewiczowna, author • Helena Sikorska, social activist • Barbara Mikulski, U.S. Senator • Irena Sendler, social worker These nine women were honored for their courage, integrity, and achievement. Their lives narrate the story of the empowerment of Polish women in the 20th century—from a writer who had only the power of her pen to act against the tyranny of an occupier to a U.S. Senator elected to the highest level of democratic government; from an internationally acclaimed scientist who was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize to a young social worker secretly saving the lives of children in the dark alleys of the Warsaw Ghetto. The lives of the Honorary Members exemplify the motto of the PWA, “The ideals of a woman are the strength of a nation.” Maria Konopnicka (1842–1910) Maria Konopnicka was a poet, novelist, translator, and essayist. -

Eugenia Żmijewska (1865–1923) wrote the short story Dwa spotkania [Two Meetings], from an idea which was provided to her by Eliza Orzeszkowa. The article presents the relations between the writers: 1) on the biographical level (correspondence, critical and literary articles and memoirs); 2) at the textual level (analysis of Two Meetings and Żmijewska’s novel Jutro [Tomorrow], whose protagonist is Orzeszkowa). The analysis of the first editions and reprints of Żmijewska’s works shows frequent rewriting. This makes us doubt the theory of the faithful fulfilment of Orzeszkowa’s testament as a writer. A comparison between Żmijewska’s journalism and her novels proves that through the literary creation of the character of Orzeszkowa she presented her own views.
