While the country showed promising signs to gain economic supremacy, we also felt the need for quality institutions, which could contribute towards realization of this goal. We needed new centers of excellence and leadership, which could produce visionary leaders capable of launching India into an era paralleled only by her glorious past. We needed new centers of nation building, which could propel all inclusive growth and development so that each and every section of the country could rightfully and happily identify with the advancement. It was with this vision that the idea of Chandragupt Institute of Management Patna (CIMP) was born. The Institute is named after Chandragupt Maurya, the king of Pataliputra, who became the first Indian emperor to unify almost whole of the Indian subcontinent. A protégé of Chanakya, he proved to be an able administrator in his own right. CIMP was envisioned as an institution providing nationally and internationally relevant management education and research facilities. CIMP is also expected to contribute to the development of Bihar and other eastern states of India, fulfilling the need for all round and inclusive growth. I am pleased to note the achievements of the institute in a short span of time. The Institute has made a name for itself in the arena of management education internationally. The graduates are well placed in their chosen career paths. The research and consulting expertise of the institute is reflected at prestigious forums. I am sure that CIMP will be able to achieve its mission and lead India and Bihar to redeem her past glory. I hope and pray that we will get help and support from all quarters of society. All the previous batches received 100 percent placement, thanks to the support of the corporate world. Top companies like AMUL, ITC, Colgate Palmolive, HDFC AMC, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, L&T, NDDB, HUL, Tata Advanced Systems and Jeevika, to name a few, have been recruiting from CIMP. New companies which approached CIMP for placement for the very first time, last year, included Tata Power DDL, HDFC Ltd., Creambell, ICICI Securities Ltd. etc. CIMP’s achievements within a short period of time are laudable by any standards. AICTE has recognized and approved the PGDM programme from the beginning. I am happy to inform you that our PGDM programme received accreditation from National Board of Accreditation (NBA). It is, in a way, an assurance to companies, visiting CIMP for campus placements, on the quality of students and the rigour of our academic programmes. Our PGDM programme is also recognised by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as equivalent to MBA. CIMP has world class infrastructure to its credit. We have a Library Resource Centre which has collaboration with DELNET and Harvard Business Publishing, an independent unit of Harvard Business School. In addition to our internal faculty (all from IIMs and other national institutes), top professionals from the corporate world provide high quality academic inputs to our students. CIMP is also emerging as the best in creating research output among the young national management schools in India. We have produced many internationally accepted research papers. This is in addition to us completing more than six dozen prestigious sponsored research projects from national and international agencies. Innovative orientation, institutionalised in all its manifested forms, is infused in to the students to become outstanding professionals. Our students have been winning prizes at national and international levels in Debates, Business Plan competitions etc. One of our girl students won the Outstanding Research Paper Award at the 22nd Global Conference on Business and Finance, Las Vegas, USA in 2016. Based on my experience at IIM and IRMA, and the quality of previous batches who passed out from CIMP, I can say for sure that our students can contribute to your organization when they are recruited. Recruiters’ feedback on our students overwhelmingly highlights their flexibility, motivation, commitment and willingness to work anywhere in India in any roles. The institute was established with the objective of contributing substantially to the academic and development credentials of Bihar, while fulfilling the primary role of training students to become professional managers. CIMP offers a two-year full-time Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), approved by AICTE and accredited by NBA. The programme is also certified from Association of Indian Universities (AIU). CIMP has also initiated an eleven months Executive Programme in Management sponsored by the Government of Bihar. CIMP has also started AICTE approved Fellow Programme in Management. For the provincial literati, emphasizing Bihar as an “organic” entity cultivated a sense of common belonging that was remarkably novel for the period, particularly because it implied that an administrative region had transformed into a cohesive cultural unit. The transformation is particularly revealing because the claims to a “natural” Bihar was not based upon a distinctive language, ethnicity or religion. Instead this regional assertion was partially instigated by British colonial politics and in part shaped by an emergent Indian national imagination. The emergence of a place-based Bihari identity therefore can only be explained by situating it in the context of 19th century colonial politics and nationalist sentiments.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 INTRODUCTION Bihar National College, popularly known as B. N. College was established in 1889 by two avid educationists and nationalists Babu Bisheswar Singh and Shaligram Singh of Kulharia Raj, Bhojpur, Bihar. During the colonial yoke after Indian National Congress was formed in 1885, these two brothers felt the crying need to stoke up nationalist feelings amongst the students and christened this college as Bihar National College. But the then British Government mounted much pressure upon them to delete the word National and promised to give the title of Raja and a very big Jagir. But, as these brothers were different from the other zamindars in the sense that while others considered the dissemination of education a grave threat to their existence these Singh brothers were committed to the ennobling and lofty causes of education. So, they did not succumb to the pressures. At that time Bisheswar Singh was a student of final year (law) at Calcutta College of Law. The Governor General of Calcutta expelled him from the college. Not only this when Bisheswar Singh started practicing law at Patna civil court after obtaining the PL certificate, he was not allowed to sit in the Bar Association. He had to encounter umpteen trails and tribulations.

    DISTRICT PROFILE PATNA INTRODUCTION Patna district is the most populous amongst all the districts of Bihar. It is the capital City of the State. Located on the bank of river Ganga & in the region which was earlier known as Magadh region. Patna is surrounded by the districts Saran, Vaishaly, Samastipur & Begusarai in the North, Bhojpur district in the West, districts of Jehanabad, Lakhisarai, & Nalanda in the South & Begusarai district in the East. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Originally called Pataliputra, Patalipattan, Pataligram, Kusumpur, and Azimabad, Patna is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world, its history and tradition dating back to the earliest dawn of civilization. It is mentioned as Pa-lin-fou in the records of Chinese traveller Fa Hien and Palibothra in Greek history. Patna was visited by Greek historian Megasthenese and finds mentioned in his book-Indica. Ancient Patna was the seat of power and capital of many kingdoms like Haryanka, Nanda, Magadh, Mauryan, Sunga, Kanva, Gupta, Pala and Suri. Patna was the fountainhead of ancient knowledge and wisdom. It produced eminent scholars such as Aryabhata - the famous astronomer and mathematician who gave the approximation of Pi correct to four decimal places; Ashvaghosha - the poet and influential Buddhist writer; Chanakya /Kautilya - the noted scholar who wrote ‘Arthashastra’ and master of statecraft; Panini- the ancient Hindu grammarian who formulated the rules of Sanskrit morphology, and Vatsyayana- the author of Kama Sutra. Afghan emperor Sher Shah Suri revived Patna in the middle of the 16th century and built a fort and a mosque here in Afghan architectural style .

The block boundary map, depth to water level maps and SRTM DEM were used as spatial layers. The published data on Arsenic contamination and Physic-chemical characteristic of water were used as collateral data, which were joined with the spatial layers for GIS based overlay analysis. The groundwater collection sites were plotted on the satellite picture of the study area. The study revealed that the depth of water level is negatively correlated to the elevation of the study area. The 10 blocks were observed as Arsenic contaminated and Maner was found to be most affected blocks. The Physico-chemical parameters of water in the district showed abnormality when compared with the permissible standard limits of World Health Organisations (WHO). The present study concluded that though the study area possesses good to very good category of groundwater potential but it is facing a serious water crisis, and needs conservation and mitigation strategies.
