Interest in dragon boating is building in Tasmania and the state now hosts six clubs with about 190 members. Dragon Boat Tasmania is in negotiations to establish a seventh club at a site close to the University of Tasmania which should attract a younger demographic.

Paddlers from all six clubs, and Victorian and Queensland guests met in February for a two-day regatta at the Lake Barrington International Rowing Course. The weekend has become a fixture in the Tasmanian dragon boat calendar and participation continues to grow from 70 paddlers in 2011 to 170 in 2014.

Also growing in popularity are marathon paddles on the River Derwent. These events evolved into the 2014 Four Bridges Paddle over 41km starting at New Norfolk and finishing under the Tasman Bridge in Hobart. Dragon Boat Tasmania intends to make this a biennial event that becomes a “must do” event in the Australian dragon boating calendar.

In 2013, the most significant achievement for Tasmanian dragon boating was the participation of four Derwent Storms members – Alison Mourant, Jenny Willing, Martin Turner and Jan Breen – in the Auroras crew competing at the World Championships in Hungary. Their participation at the international level has meant a substantial boost to Tasmanian dragon boating. All Tasmanian members are very proud of their achievement.

The Vic state coaching team, David Abel, Reka Abraham and David Nairn, have shaped powerful crews over the last few months. We also have a fast growing talent pool in Victoria to select from and over the coming seasons, we plan to continue to build our strength and become a powerhouse in Australian dragon boat racing.

We look forward to testing ourselves in the sunshine against Australia’s best!
