JOHN QUINCY ADAMS SOCIETY
Proitle
The John Quincy Adams Society was founded in the 102nd Congress by individuals in the private sector and Members of Congress who were interested in forging a closer relationship between those who make public policy decisions and those who are affected by them.
The Society has hosted dinner meetings in the last two Congresses which featured speakers such as House Republican Leader Bob Michel. Senate Republican Whip Alan Simpson, Governor of South Carolina Carroll Campbell and Drew Lewis of Union Pacific. Issues ranged from political and demographic realignments resulting from reapportionment to the international consequences of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, health care and the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The dinner meetings have produced a closer working relationship among the members of the organization and have allowed an exchange of opinions and ideas which helped shape the direction of both Members of Congress and business executives.
It is the mission of the Society to continue its agenda of dinner meetings in the 103rd Congress. Recent events have featured Senator John Chafee of Rhode Island; former Minnesota Congressman Bill Frenzel, the new President of the Society; Secretary of Labor Robert Reich; former Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin; Speaker of the House Tom Foley; USTR Mickey Kantor: Advisor to the President Mack McLarty; CEOs Robert Winters of The Prudential, Jan Leschly of SmithKline Beecham and George Fisher of Eastman Kodak; 96 Members of Congress. and more than 40 representatives of the business community.
The Society has also conducted briefings on key issues such as health care and trade and has produced in-depth analyses of those issues, based on the expertise and involvement of its members.
JQA intends to host regional conferences and meetings all across the United States in an effort to encourage more participation in the political process by senior executives of American business and industry, especially those from smaller and mid- sized companies, who do not have regular opportunities to discuss and debate questions of policy with policy makers.
John Quincy Adams Society members are committed to improving the policy making process and strengthening the ability of Members of Congress who believe in the principles offree enterprise, less government interference in the marketplace, job growth and healthy, fair competition here and abroad.

BEFORE COMING HERE, I
THOUGHT I SHOULD DO A LITTLE
RESEARCH ON JOHN QUINCY
ADAMS, SO I WENT DIRECTLY TO
STROM THURMOND.
AND STROM SAID THAT HE
DISTINCTLY REMEMBERS SERVING
WITH ADAMS, AND THAT FOR A
YANKEE, HE REALLY WASN'T SUCH
A BAD FELLOW.
Page 6 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
STROM REMINDED ME THAT
ADAMS IS THE ONLY MAN TO HAVE
SERVED IN THE HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES AFTER SERVING
AS PRESIDENT.
AND SINCE STROM HAS SET
ABOUT EVERY RECORD THERE IS,
HE SAID AFTER ONE OR TWO MORE
TERMS IN THE SENATE, HE MAY
RUN FOR THE PRESIDENCY ... AND
AFTER TWO TERMS THERE, HE WILL
THINK ABOUT RUNNING FOR THE
Page 7 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
HOUSE.
I DID FIND SOME WORDS OF
ADVICE FROM JOHN QUINCY
ADAMS WHICH RING AS TRUE
TODAY AS THEY DID BACK THEN.
HE SAID, "THE NATION WHICH
ENJOYS THE MOST FREEDOM (WILL
BE) THE MOST POWERFUL NATION. II
AND NO DOUBT ABOUT IT,
THAT'S WHAT THE REPUBLICAN
PARTY HAS STOOD FOR
THROUGHOUT OUR HISTORY. WE
Page 8 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
KNOW THAT IF WE TRUST THE
PEOPLE ... IF WE ALLOW INDIVIDUALS
THE FREEDOM TO CREATE AND
BUILD, THEN AMERICA WILL
ALWAYS BE STRONG.
AND AMERICA TURNED TO THE
REPUBLICAN PARTY LAST
NOVEMBER BECAUSE WE STOOD
FOR JUST THAT. AND BECAUSE
THEY UNDERSTOOD THAT OVER
THE PAST FEW DECADES, MORE
AND MORE FREEDOM HAD BEEN
Page 9 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
TAKEN AWAY FROM THEM, AND
MORE AND MORE AUTHORITY HAD
BEEN GIVEN TO THE FEDERAL
GOVERNMENT.
I BELIEVE THAT AMERICANS
GAVE US A MANDATE ON
NOVEMBER STH TO REIN IN
GOVERNMENT, AND TO GIVE BACK
TO THE PEOPLE THE FREEDOM TO
MAKE THE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT
THEIR FAMILY AND THEIR JOB.
AND THAT'S THE BATTLE THAT
Page 10 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
IS GOING TO BE FOUGHT IN THE
COMING YEARS.
THESE ARE EXCITING TIMES TO
BE A REPUBLICAN. WE ARE THE
MAJORITY PARTY ON CAPITOL HILL,
IN GOVERNOR'S OFFICES, AND
ACROSS AMERICA. WE ARE
DRIVING THE AGENDA. WE ARE
SEEN AS THE PARTY OF IDEAS AND
INNOVATION.
AND FOR THOSE OF US WHO
HAVE BEEN CLIMBING THAT
Page 11 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
MOUNTAIN FOR A LONG, LONG
TIME, THE VIEW DOESN'T GET
MUCH BETTER THAN THIS. WELL, I
UNDERSTAND THAT THE VIEW
FROM 1600 PENNSYLVANIA
AVENUE ISN'T BAD, EITHER ... BUT
THAT'S ANOTHER MATTER.
I THINK WE ARE ALL WELL
AWARE, HOWEVER, THAT OUR TIME
ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN WILL BE
BRIEF, UNLESS WE LIVE UP TO THE
EXPECTATIONS OF THE AMERICAN
Page 12 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
PEOPLE.
AND IT SHOULDN'T COME AS
ANY SECRET THAT THERE ARE
QUITE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS
TOWN WHO DON'T THINK WE CAN
SUCCEED. THEY THINK
REPUBLICANS WILL SELF-DESTRUCT
BY SQUABBLING WITH EACH
OTHER.
I DON'T MIND A LITTLE
SQUABBLING--1 THINK THAT'S A
SIGN OF A HEALTHY PARTY. AND
Page 13 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
THE MORE IDEAS THAT WE DEBATE
AND PUT ON THE TABLE, THE
BETTER THE SOLUTIONS WE WILL
PROPOSE.
BUT I THINK WE ALL SHOULD
UNDERSTAND THAT KEEPING OUR
PROMISES IS ABSOLUTELY
ESSENTIAL IN THE CURRENT
POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE.
WILL WE FAIL AS A PARTY IF THE
HOUSE DOESN'T PASS ALL 10
Page 14 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
ITEMS ON ITS CONTRACT, OR THE
SENATE PASS ALL SEVEN ITEMS ON
OUR PLATFORM? I DON'T THINK
SO--ESPECIALL Y IF PRESIDENT
CLINTON AND THE DEMOCRATS
ARE SEEN AS BLOCKING CHANGE.
BUT WE WILL FAIL IF THE PUBLIC
BELIEVES WE ARE NOT MAKING AN
EFFORT--IF WE ARE NOT VOTING ON
THE TOUGH ISSUES, AND IF WE ARE
NOT DOING ALL WE CAN TO
RETURN GOVERNMENT TO THE
Page 15 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
PEOPLE.
AND REST ASSURED THAT THE
MEDIA WILL TRY AND PORTRAY
REPUBLICANS AS HEARTLESS, AND
THEY WILL ALL REPORT ON
AMERICANS WHO MAY BE
TEMPORARILY HURT BECAUSE OF
BUDGET CUTS WE MAKE.
WE HAVE TO MEET THESE
REPORTS HEAD ON. I HAPPEN TO
BE A REPUBLICAN WHO DOES
BELIEVE IN GOVERNMENT. I MIGHT
Page 16 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
NOT BE STANDING HERE IF IT
WEREN'T FOR THE G.I. BILL, OR IF IT
WEREN'T FOR VETERAN'S
HOSPITALS.
SO REPUBLICANS DO CARE FOR
THOSE IN NEED. BUT WE ALSO
CARE WHEN PROGRAMS THAT ARE
POORLY CONCEIVED AND POORLY
IMPLEMENTED WASTE TAXPAYER
DOLLARS AND DON'T REACH THE
PEOPLE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO
HELP.
Page 17 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
SO WHERE DOES THE
REPUBLICAN PARTY GO FROM
HERE? STRAIGHT AHEAD.
OUR MISSION AND OUR GOAL IS
TO DO AS JOHN QUINCY ADAMS
SAID, AND TO GIVE AS MUCH
FREEDOM AS POSSIBLE TO THE
AMERICAN PEOPLE. AND I LOOK
FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU
TO DO JUST THAT.
BEFORE I CLOSE, I DO JUST
Page 18 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
WANT TO SAY A WORD ABOUT
MEXICO.
I KNOW IF YOU WERE TO TAKE A
POLL IN ANY CONGRESSIONAL
DISTRICT, THERE PROBABLY
WOULDN'T BE MUCH SUPPORT FOR
HELPING MEXICO. BUT SOMETIMES
LEADERSHIP MEANS TAKING
UNPOPULAR STANDS IF THEY ARE
IN AMERICA'S BEST INTEREST--AND
I BELIEVE ASSISTANCE TO MEXICO
IS IN OUR BEST INTEREST.
Page 19 of 20 This document is from the collections at the Dole Archives, University of Kansas http://dolearchives.ku.edu
PRESIDENT CLINTON'S PACKAGE
IS NOT A RISK FREE SOLUTION. BUT
NOT ACTING AT ALL CARRIED FAR
BIGGER AND MORE DNAGEROUS
RISKS--SUCH AS ILLEGAL
IMMIGRATION, AND FINANCIAL
CHAOS ON OUR 2000 MILE BORDER
WITH MEXICO.
WITH THAT, l'D BE HAPPY TO
TAKE ANY QUESTIONS.
