March 2007 Newsletter ----------------------------------- Yesterday & Today Records 255A Church St Parramatta NSW 2150 phone/fax: (02) 96333585 email: [email protected] web: www.yesterdayandtoday.com.au ------------------------------------------------------ Postage: 1 cd $2.00/ 2cd $3/ 3-4 cds $5.80* (*Recent Australia Post price increase.) Guess what? We have just celebrated our 18th anniversary. Those who try things we recommend are rewarded. We have stayed in business for one reason and that is we have never attempted to appeal to the lowest common denominator as mainstream outlets do. At the same time we recognise that people do have different tastes and to some CMT is actually good. We also appeal to those people and offer many mainstream items in our bargain bin. But the legends and true country music are our bread butter and will always be. If you see something you think you may like but are worried let us know. If you pass our inquisition we may be able to send it on a sale or return basis. I say inquisition because if your favourite artists are SheDaisy and Rascal Flatts we certainly aren’t going to risk something as precious as Justin Trevino. By the same token we believe great music is timeless and knows no bounds. People may think chuck steak is good until they try the best rump! Recently I had the pleasure of seeing Dale Watson. Before hand I had the added pleasure of sitting in with my compatriot Eddie White (a.k.a. “The Cosmic Cowboy”) for an interview at the 2RRR Studios. Dale is a humble, engaging and extremely likeable man with a passion for tradition.

  • Grammy Winner John Prine Brings Singer-Songwriter Act to Cal Poly
California Polytechnic State University Sept. 2, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: LISA WOSKE (805) 756-7110 Grammy Winner John Prine Brings Singer- Songwriter Act to Cal Poly Sept. 25 SAN LUIS OBISPO, -- Considered “a songwriter’s songwriter” throughout the music industry, Grammy-winner John Prine brings his craggy voice, biting guitar and deadpan humor to the Christopher Cohan Center at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 25, 2004. Opening for John Prine is popular alt country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier. Cal Poly Arts presents Prine -- whose genius lies in his lyrics and the stories he tells -- as part of the new 2004/2005 season. “My brother Dave taught me a chord...and from there, it was me sitting there alone in a room singing to a wall,” Prine remembers. He then adds with his characteristic style of understatement, “The wall seemed to like it.” Loyal audiences and music critics around the country have been “liking” his style for decades. With the encouragement of fellow musician Kris Kristofferson, Prine penned his 1971 self-titled debut album for a national label. The release was praised by critics around the country. Throughout eight albums and two record companies, Prine continued refining his voice and attracting fans who closely identified with his emotional sharp shooting. Says Prine: “It’s a great feeling when you put something in a song and other people say that’s exactly how they feel. That’s the most gratifying thing about songwriting for me.” Among the songs that Prine wrote are such classics as “Please Don’t Bury Me,”

  • Andrew Johnson Installation Puts Viewer Into Middle East Conflict
Pittsburgh, PA Monday April 22, 2019 News Sports Lifestyle Classifieds About Us Take me to... A & E Home > A & E Previous Articles People Movies/Videos Short Takes: Andrew Johnson TV/Radio installation puts viewer into Middle East Music Theater conflict Books Events Tuesday, March 04, 2003 Calendar Explore Arts & Entertainment writers offer capsule comments on this, that and Pittsburgh the other thing ... 'Pressed: When Words Were Earth' "There can be no separation between pure and political language; therefore cultural language (such as art) is always political language, a voice raised either in assent or dissent." Whether or not one takes issue with the breadth of this assertion by Gary Nickard, made to accompany a 2001 installation by artist Andrew Johnson, its fit with Johnson's oeuvre -- which mixes hot issues and cool reason -- is a good one. In visual drills that are savvy, poetic and raise questions that society would like to ignore, Johnson, like a conceptual Cubist, challenges his viewers to consider events from perspectives other than mainstream via work that is intensely researched and painstakingly crafted. "Pressed: When Words Were Earth," at Chatham College, is a response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that at first seems benign. As the visitor walks between the tracks of the Caterpillar bulldozer looming ahead, the stroll becomes burdened: by the discomforting audio, by the rows of barbed wire cutting access to verdant olive trees and crystalline blue, by an American flag, by the fruit and child's backpack lying in mud that begins to look more like mangled flesh. The visitor is implicated.

  • That Same Old Obsession Excerpts from a Life
That Same Old Obsession - The Millennium Project That Same Old Obsession Excerpts from a life: 1949-1999 The Millennium Project That Same Old Obsession - The Millennium Project I started collecting music when I was 11 years old. Having been brought up on a diet of classical and banal pop music we inherited an old Dansette autochange record player which came with someone else’s collection of 45s. Pat Boone's April Love/When The Swallows Come Back To Capistrano got a good hammering in our house for a while. But in 1958 I was ready for something fresh and new. When I visited my sister Sheila during the school holidays, my new brother-in-law suggested that rather than just go out and buy records 'willy nilly' (£1 birthday money went a long way in those days!) I should collect a particular artiste. I had been thrilled by Lonnie Donegan's 'Grand Coulee Dam' and loved that acoustic sound he got so he was top of my hit list for a while. Then I heard 'All I Have To Do Is Dream' by the Everly Brothers (we didn't have a TV in those days and I thought they were black!) and my life changed from that moment on. So take a bow John Benfield, you changed my life and everyone else's who has come into contact with me since! From a few scratchy 45s in 1958 my collection had grown by a few scratchy EPs (3 x EP = 1 LP on a newsboys wages) by 1960, and (lo and behold) a stack of scratchy (mono) LPs a couple of years later.
