E-mail: [email protected] This paper affords a complete analysis of the construction of the original Northampton (later Northumberland) House in the Strand (demolished in 1874), which has never been fully investigated. It begins with an examination of the little-known architectural patronage of its builder, Lord Henry Howard, 1st Earl of Northampton from 1603, one of the most interesting figures of the early Stuart era. With reference to the building of the contemporary Salisbury House by Sir Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, the only other Strand palace to be built in the early seventeenth century, textual and visual evidence are closely investigated. A rediscovered eleva- tional drawing of the original front of Northampton House is also discussed. By associating it with other sources, such as the first inventory of the house (transcribed in the Appendix), the inside and outside of Northampton House as Henry Howard left it in 1614 are re-configured for the first time. Northumberland House was the greatest representative of the old aristocratic mansions on the Strand – the almost uninterrupted series of waterfront palaces and large gardens that stretched from Westminster to the City of London, the political and economic centres of the country, respectively. Northumberland House was also the only one to have survived into the age of photography. -

Representations of power in the stables at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, and John Wootton’s Sir Robert Walpole with his Hunter and Groom When Sir Robert Walpole first rose to political power from humble origins, he had much to prove to the world. In order to consolidate his position as Prime Minister against the backdrop of the new Hanoverian dynasty, Walpole capitalised on extravagant displays of power, impressing political peers and local squires alike by inviting them for entertainment and hunting at his estate at Houghton Hall, Norfolk. This was hardly coincidental: although relatively unexplored in scholarship, historically, horses served as vehicles to showcase a man’s elite social standing and ability to govern. However, it was also important for Walpole to recognise the limits of his power in order to demonstrate that he was no threat to the monarchy. This study examines the stable architecture at Houghton Hall and the equestrian portrait of Walpole by John Wootton (1726) in order to demonstrate the extent to which equestrian representations could function as a metaphor for both power and submission, which is particularly pertinent when applied to the hierarchical relations between Prime Minister and King. riting to the Prince of Wales on July 14, 1731, Lord Hervey would remark that Sir Robert Walpole’s Houghton Hall in Norfolk was a paradigm of W‘taste, expense, state and parade.’1 This comment in itself is perhaps unsurprising – country houses, after all, have always been about display, founded and embellished as part of a conscious mission to establish a dynastic ‘line’.2 However, what makes this comment so interesting in Walpole’s case is that as the first Prime Minister, Walpole was essentially a commoner who had risen to power. -

A second, equally important source was trade with North West Europe and Scandinavia, managed through the mighty Hanseatic League, of which King’s Lynn was an important member. At the outset of this tour, a day will be spent in and around King’s Lynn, and we shall be guided by the town’s most informed local guide. He has arranged private access to the town’s most important recently restored historic house, in addition to some of the town’s fine churches and civic buildings. Thereafter, our days will be spent exploring the houses, gardens and wonderful churches of this part of the world, subject to any government restrictions that may be in force when we visit. A remarkable figure looms large over the best of these houses – the Yorkshire genius, William Kent. Houghton Hall was a ‘new build’ mansion, commissioned by the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, where Kent was called in to ‘mastermind’ the interiors and their decoration, most of which are remarkably well preserved. Raynham Hall was already a fine house when Kent was employed to adapt it to the latest ideas associated with a revival of interest in all things ‘Palladian’, his expertise honed during his time in Italy. -

MINISTRY OF DEFENCE The Old War Office Building A history The Old War Office Building …a building full of history Foreword by the Rt. Hon Geoff Hoon MP, Secretary of State for Defence The Old War Office Building has been a Whitehall landmark for nearly a century. No-one can fail to be impressed by its imposing Edwardian Baroque exterior and splendidly restored rooms and stairways. With the long-overdue modernisation of the MOD Main Building, Defence Ministers and other members of the Defence Council – the Department’s senior committee – have moved temporarily to the Old War Office. To mark the occasion I have asked for this short booklet, describing the history of the Old War Office Building, to be published. The booklet also includes a brief history of the site on which the building now stands, and of other historic MOD headquarters buildings in Central London. People know about the work that our Armed Forces do around the world as a force for good. Less well known is the work that we do to preserve our heritage and to look after the historic buildings that we occupy. I hope that this publication will help to raise awareness of that. The Old War Office Building has had a fascinating past, as you will see. People working within its walls played a key role in two World Wars and in the Cold War that followed. The building is full of history. Lawrence of Arabia once worked here. I am now occupying the office which Churchill, Lloyd-George and Profumo once had. -
Thomas Hope Blue John Atheniennes
A PAIR OF GEORGE III BLUE JOHN PATINATED AND GILT BRONZE ATHENIENNES ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS HOPE A rare pair of early 19th century patinated and English lacquer gilt bronze atheniennes supporting highly figured solid Derbyshire blue john cups, the flared rims with thumb moulded edges, polished inside and out to reveal the rich translucent crystalline figuring. Each cup supported on parcel gilt bases comprising of three panther monopedia chimeras around a central cabochon of blue john mounted into a bronze circular stylobate and elevated by a gilt ring on stepped slightly canted neo Egyptian square bases separated and supported on four gilt paw feet. Attributed to Thomas Hope (1769-1831) England, circa 1805-10 Height 12 inches Diameter 9 1/2 inches Dating from circa 1805-10, this magnificent pair of gilt and patinated bronze mounted blue john atheniennes incorporate designs by Thomas Hope (1769-1831) and feature bronze work attributed to Alexis Decaix (d. 1811). Hope was an influential patron of the arts, a great collector, connoisseur and a highly original designer of furniture and decorative objects who, as here, favoured the use of contrasting rare blue john and other coloured stone with bold classical ormolu mounts. As a leading arbiter of taste in Regency England, Hope’s designs were widely disseminated through his influential publication Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, (1807), which illustrated and discussed many works of art that he had acquired and designed for his home in Duchess Street, London. A number of items from that publication conform in style to the present works, for instance plate. -
