    Portraits of Emigration: Sour Milk and Honey in the Promised Land Mary Patrice Erdmans, University of North Carolina, Greensboro This article analyzes the moral tones of public emigration stories through an ex- ploratory analysis of newspaper stories published between 1990 and 1993 in a region in Poland with a century-old tradition of out-migration. Media stories arc fertile ground for examining values and myths because they negotiate between the micro-level process of individuals constructing meanings and the macro-level process of political economies producing meanings. I identified two sets of contradictory stories: (1) stories about the sending country cast emigrants as either home builders or home wreckers, and (2) sto- ries about the receiving country depicted America as either Horatio Alger's land of pos- sibility or a morally degenerate place where greed corrupts the soul. To explain these contradictions, I compare the institution of migration to (post)modcm culture and note that both contribute to social diversity and structural differentiation which lead to value inconsistencies. An article titled "The bitter taste of America," published in the Tygodnik Podhalanski in Poland, opens with a description of an aging elegant woman dressed in fading American clothes carefiilly counting her change as she does her daily shopping in Zakopane, a town in the mountainous Podhale region in southeastern Poland (Sowa 1991). The husband of this impoverished woman had emigrated to the United States in the 1970s, leaving her and their three children behind on the family land. He never returned, yet neither did he sever ties with the family. Over the years he sent them money and presents from Chicago, and eventually each of his children joined him there.

However, a significant decrease in their area has been observed in many places in Europe. This phenomenon leads to many negative consequences, which is why meadows and pastures are managed for conservation purposes in most European countries, especially in protected areas. The aim of this study is to identify the challenges for the management of semi-natural grasslands in the national parks of the Polish Carpathians with a special focus on the implementation of conservation measures. The study highlights also attitudes of local communities towards the conservation of semi-natural grasslands as well as motivations guiding the residents to support conservation activities. According to interviews conducted with parks' employees six key categories of challenges have been distinguished. They are associated with the land ownership structure, financing and implementation of conservation measures, planning and evaluation of applied treatments, and natural and social determinants. Only some of the challenges result exclusively from the mountainous conditions or refer directly to the effectiveness of the conservation measures. Most of the challenges are typical of those found in national parks throughout the world and are connected with legislative and financial issues.

Based on conducted inventory, field research and knowledge acquired thanks to them, we undertook many conservation measures through- out Poland. The experience we gained was shared in our pu- blications, published as part of the implementation of pro- jects for alkaline fens protection in northern and southern Poland. This book is an attempt to summarize the knowled- ge we have had so far and which we had gained over the past few years implementing projects for their protection throughout the country. Jana 22, 31-018, Kraków: Poland e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Land use and land cover changes (LULC) and their impact on potential soil erosion, road density as transfer routes of material and water to channels as well as channel level changes were studied in three catchments (~20 km2 each) in the central part of the Polish Western Carpathians in 1975-2015. It was hypothesised that short-term LULC changes during transition from a centrally planned to a free-market economy are sufficient to modify selected elements of the environment and that these changes can be identified in a measurable way. The analysis of aerial photographs and socio-economic data indicates that during the investigated period, the forest area increased by 20-27%, with a continuous decrease of cultivated land by 89-93% in the three catch- ments. LULC changes were accompanied by continuous population density growth by 29-50% and a decrease of the population dependent only on agriculture to less than 5%. Analyses confirmed the hypothesis that the environment was significantly modified due to the LULC changes. Abandonment of cultivated land, forest succession and a decrease in used road density, have resulted in lower efficiency of slope wash and sediment transport within the 4th-order catchments.

Various functional types of rural settlement were shown, with the spatial patterns and traditional forms of farm architecture, observed in this part of Poland. Key words: Podhale, rural settlement, history, architecture, spatial pattern 1. An outline of history Natural conditions in the Podhale region were less favourable for the settlement than those in other parts of Poland. In the Middle Ages eve the discussed area was covered by forest, its flat zones were swampy and marshy, the severe climate and poor soils were also discouraging factors. Moreover, this peripheral region was dangerous and needed a military protection. The first settlers came from the Vistula river valley, along its tributaries. Thepermanent settlement has been developed here since the 13th c. Its proves are names of rivers and streams in documents, i.e. Biały and Czarny Dunajec, Wielki and Mały Rogoźnik, Piekielnik, Leśnica and Poroniec (Dobrowolski 1935). The above mentioned settlers originated from the regions of the early cities – those of Cracow, Bochnia and Sandomierz. There were three main routes of their migration – the Cracow route, along the Raba and Skawa valleys, the Sandomierz route (the earliest one) along the Dunajec river valley, and the Szczyrzyc route. The latter one started at Szczyrzyc monastery, the Cisterian one.
