TalkingPointz Research Note 1 Enterprise Connect 2019 By Dave Michels, April 2019 1. Overview 1. Enterprise Connect is the largest industry event for enterprise communicaons. 2. The conference takes place annually in March in Orlando, Florida. 3. This year, the vendor keynote presentaons were from Amazon, Cisco, Google, and Microso. 4. Organizers keep the aendance numbers private. One report menoned 6,500 aendees, another 7,200. The exhibit hall was likely the largest it’s ever been with some 200 vendors. 5. There was no dominant theme at EC19 (like messaging or WebRTC a few years back). The most dominant themes were around video communicaons and cloud contact center. However, vendors and exhibitors shared a lot of UC/UCaaS news. 6. There were 91 first-me exhibitors this year. 2. General Observaons 1. It is remarkable how much this conference connues to change. This event was all about cloud communicaons, parcularly UCaaS and conferencing services. 2. Dominant brands/booths included Poly, RingCentral, Talkdesk, and Vonage. 3. The vendor keynotes were excellent this year. No bombs, and only minor glitches if any. 4. AI was everywhere: telephony, conferencing, messaging, contact center, and specialized tool sets including management and analycs. AI use cases are expanding beyond use cases that begin with transcripon. 3. Selected Announcements Visual Communications 1. Microso announced new enhancements for analog/dumb whiteboards that use a separate “content camera” aimed at the whiteboard. 2. Microso and Zoom previewed real-me capons in both nave and translated languages. Microso finally released its blurred background feature that it demonstrated a year ago.

Social Media Types: Introducing a Data Driven Taxonomy Paraskevas Koukaras, Christos Tjortjis, Dimitrios Rousidis School of Science and Technology, International Hellenic University GR-570 01 Thermi, Thessaloniki, Greece {p.koukaras, c.tjortjis, d.rousidis}@ihu.edu.gr Abstract: Social Media (SM) have been established as multifunctional networking tools that tend to offer an increasingly wider variety of services, making it difficult to determine their core purpose and mission, therefore, their type. This paper assesses this evolution of Social Media Types (SMTs), presents, and evaluates a novel hypothesis-based data driven methodology for analyzing Social Media Platforms (SMPs) and categorizing SMTs. We review and update literature regarding the categorization of SMPs, based on their services. We develop a methodology to propose and evaluate a new taxonomy, comprising: i) the hypothesis that the number of SMTs is smaller than what current literature suggests, ii) observations on data regarding SM usage and iii) experimentation using association rules and clustering algorithms. As a result, we propose three (3) SMTs, namely Social, Entertainment and Profiling networks, typically capturing emerging SMP services. Our results show that our hypothesis is validated by implementing our methodology and we discuss threats to validity. Keywords Social Media, Social Media Types, Social Media Sites, Social Media Platforms, Social Networking, Data mining, Clustering, Association Rules. Abbreviations Social Media (SM), Social Media Type (SMT), Social Media Platform (SMP), Social Networks (SN) 1 1. • An Overview of Social Media Apps and Their Potential Role in Geospatial Research
International Journal of Geo-Information Article An Overview of Social Media Apps and their Potential Role in Geospatial Research Innocensia Owuor * and Hartwig H. Hochmair Geomatics Program, Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center, University of Florida, 3205 College Ave, Davie, FL 33314, USA; hhhochmair@ufl.edu * Correspondence: innocensia.owuor@ufl.edu Received: 16 July 2020; Accepted: 29 August 2020; Published: 1 September 2020 Abstract: Social media apps provide analysts with a wide range of data to study behavioral aspects of our everyday lives and to answer societal questions. Although social media data analysis is booming, only a handful of prominent social media apps, such as Twitter, Foursquare/Swarm, Facebook, or LinkedIn are typically used for this purpose. However, there is a large selection of less known social media apps that go unnoticed in the scientific community. This paper reviews 110 social media apps and assesses their potential usability in geospatial research through providing metrics on selected characteristics. About half of the apps (57 out of 110) offer an Application Programming Interface (API) for data access, where rate limits, fee models, and type of spatial data available for download vary strongly between the different apps. To determine the current role and relevance of social media platforms that offer an API in academic research, a search for scientific papers on Google Scholar, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Digital Library, and the Science Core Collection of the Web of Science (WoS) is conducted. This search revealed that Google Scholar returns the highest number of documents (Mean = 183,512) compared to ACM (Mean = 1895) and WoS (Mean = 1495), and that data and usage patterns from prominent social media apps are more frequently analyzed in research studies than those of less known apps.

  • Issues of Teleportation and Personhood in Stephen King's The
International Journal of Language and Linguistics Vol. 5, No. 2, June 2018 doi:10.30845/ijll.v5n2p14 Issues of Teleportation and Personhood in Stephen King’s the Jaunt Prof M.A. Israel A. C. Noletto Piauí Federal Institute IFPI/Anglolit Brazil Prof Dr Sebastião Alves Teixeira Lopes Piauí Federal University UFPI/Anglolit Brazil Prof Dr Margareth Torres de Alencar Costa Piauí State University UESPI/Anglolit Brazil Abstract This paper‟s aim is to provoke thought experiments and a speculative reading on the Science Fiction/horror short story The Jaunt (1985) written by Stephen King, regarding personhood philosophical and moral issues related to its central theme, teleportation. We focus our discussion on two main topics: (1) The philosophical and conceptual implications of teleportation of living beings and the consequent issue of personhood, that is, the so called “duplicate paradox.” (2) The reason why conscious or awake living beings cannot survive the jaunt and the repercussions thereof. Such thinkers as Derek Parfit (2016),David J. Chalmers (2016), Eric Olson (2016), among others greatly subsidise our discussion. We also produce a concise comparative analysis of concepts unearthed from the plot that find parallels in the blockbusters Inception (2010) and The Matrix (1999). The result is an extensive exegesis of the text and a broad metaphysical consideration concerning the author‟s views. Keywords: SF, the Jaunt, Teleportation, Personhood Issues 1 Introduction The Jaunt, horror/Science Fiction (henceforth sf) short story written by famous Stephen King, published in 1981 and republished as a part of the collection Skeleton Crew in 1985, portrays the tragic story of Mark‟s son, Ricky, who dies after being teleported while still awake in the early 24th century, when the “jaunting” technology has become commonplace allowing humanity to travel instantaneously to any distance where there is a station or a portal installed.

Introduction Wait—just a few minutes. I want to talk to you ... and then I am going to kiss you. Wait ... I Here’s some more short stories, if you want them. They span a long period of my life. The oldest, “The Reaper’s Image,” was written when I was eighteen, in the summer before I started college. I thought of the idea, as a matter of fact, when I was out in the back yard of our house in West Durham, Maine, shooting baskets with my brother, and reading it over again made me feel a little sad for those old times. The most recent, “The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet,” was finished in November of 1983. That is a span of seventeen years, and does not count as much, I suppose, if put in comparison with such long and rich careers as those enjoyed by writers as diverse as Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, Mark Twain, and Eudora Welty, but it is a longer time than Stephen Crane had, and about the same length as the span of H.
